RE: Translations or Localisation of Framemaker content

2009-03-06 Thread Diane Gaskill
Hi Fred,

You need to hire an LSP (localization service provider - AKA translation
vendor) to do the work for you. You will likely hear from a number of
people on the list telling you to use the translation vendor they use
because the vendor worked ok for them. While there is nothing wrong with
checking out the recommended vendors, your best chance of success is to use
the same criteria to hire a translation vendor as you would use to hire a
technical writer. Do they have technical knowledge and experience in your
industry? Do they have experience translating documents similar to yours
from English to Russian? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'll send
you detailed information offline.

Hi Framers,

We have two rather large technical manuals (300+ pages each with text and
illustrations) that will need to be translated into Russian (90-95% of the
material is common to both manuals). The content involves low to mid-level
information on mechanical, hydraulic, high-power, low-power, fiber-optic,
and telemetry systems (and a kitchen sink). We have not had to do any
translations prior to this, so it is unknown territory. I'd appreciate any
comments about how the process works, how to make it successful, and what
pitfalls to avoid. You can contact me off-list if you prefer or if you have
specific recommendations.

Thanks,
Fred

Dianne's right. You do need an LSP. A couple of quick things to look for as you
vet providers:

1. Do they use only professional translators? ATA certified or LISA
2. Do they use only mother tongue translators living in the target country?
3. Are their editors and proofreaders professional translators, mother tongue,
living in target country?
4. Do they have access to translators with a technical background in your

In FrameMaker 8 (p277) a search for \f (without the quotes) will find what

Hi Klaus,

In FM 7, the Help says \f will find end of flow or end of table cell,

When I have the courage to install my TCS 2 trial, I'll see what FM 9 does!

Yen instead of bullets

2009-03-06 Thread Anne Urban
Frame 7.0, Power Macintosh Release 7.0p492
PowerMac G5, 2G memory, 230 G HD
Mac OS X 10.4.11, Frame runs in Classic version 1.9 build

Dear Framers,

I have put myself in a hole and am stuck here. The problem
is that when I produce a PDF by distilling PostScript, or
when I print directly, my bullets show up as yen, and my
apostrophes don't show up at all. This is new, but I haven't
changed Frame or Distiller. I did, however, install Acrobat
9 Pro recently.

I looked at the MIF; bullets show up there as \xa5, apostrophes
show up as \xd5.

I've tried setting the printer to Adobe PDF 7.0 and Adobe PDF 9.0.
I've tried choosing TrueType as the preferred format.
(I'm a font ignoramus.)
The font is TimesNewRoman.

I would love to be able to print again. Argh. Thanks.

Regards,
-Anne Urban

RE: searching for a section symbol

2009-03-06 Thread Robert Evans
Carol,

The FM help and book both list \f as being the sequence for finding the
end-of-flow or end-of-table-cell character (which I think is what you
mean by the section symbol), so something like [0-9] \f _should_ work.

However, trying it out (on FM 7, Windows XP), it does seem to work, but
will also find anything with a ending with a digit and a space, so
adding \f doesn't seem to do much.

Is this a bug in FM7? I'm sure I've used \f in the past for tidying up
tables and it worked (only it didn't actually select the end-of-flow
symbol, and of course you can't replace it).

Numbering Lists for book

2009-03-06 Thread Carol Gosnell
Hi,

I am sure someone knows the answer to this, but it is eluding me...

I am numbering graphics and tables in a multi-chapter book. The project
manager would like to generate one List of Figures and one List of
Tables (sequential numbers for each list).

How do I do that? Each chapter begins the numbering anew and the only
thing I can think of is to add a chapter prefix to the autonumbering in
the paragraph tag, but I'd rather have a much simpler list.

Thanks in advance for your help.

FW: Framemaker image problem

2009-03-06 Thread Brabson, Michelle
This post is from a colleague of mine.

I have a growing problem with imported images into FrameMaker 7.2.

I typically work off a network. A few months ago, I started getting an odd
message when I'd try to save files with images that are imported objects.
(These are files I've worked on for years.) Even if I didn't change the image
but only, say, changed the footer information, I'd get the following message:

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document.
The file has been saved, but has lost some image data.

Our production manager looked at the files, copying them to her desktop, and
had no problems. So I started working on those files on my desktop, and for a
short time, the problem disappeared, only to come back worse than ever.

Now, whenever I save a document into which I've inserted an image, I get this
message. I've tried 'FileImportFile...Import by Reference,'
FileImportFile...Copy into Document,' 'FileImportObject...Create from
File...Link,' and FileImportObject...Create from File' (without a link). I've
tried to import Canvas files (.cnv), Visio files (.vsd), plain .jpgs and plain
.gifs, and always get the same result.

Once this occurs, I have a file in the same path as my original file with a
seemingly random 3-character extension after the .fm, such as 'CO4' or '357'.
If I double-click the file and open with Frame, or if I delete the wonky
extension, the file opens, but a grey box is displayed instead of the image.

I'm on FrameMaker 7.2p158, with Window XP Professional Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3).

Our production manager found a previous post about Service Pack 3 of XP causing
problems with imported images, but she is also on Service Pack 3 and is not
having this problem.

I am on digest. Please respond directly to the e-mail addresses so we may see
your comments when you make them.

Michelle

Overprint graphic does not overprint when printing to PDF with FrameMaker 8.0p277

2009-03-06 Thread Simon BUCH
Dear Framers,

It has been quite a long time since I last accessed FrameUsers ... but I
am now asking if anyone has any experience with issues regarding FM8
printing errors?

The reason I ask is because I have an interesting PDF file, which was
created by our customer using CADscript. The PDF when opened in Acrobat
[version 6 onwards] displays correctly - with the contours and elevation
of the mountains shown in the custom spot colour. Acrobat displays the
contours and elevation numbers even if the Acrobat Overprint preview
option is *not* enabled.

When I import the PDF into FrameMaker 7.1, the graphic is shown
correctly. When I print from FM7.1 to the Adobe PDF printer, the
resultant PDF output also displays correctly. When I import the PDF
into FrameMaker 8.0p277, the graphic is also shown correctly.

Everything is good so far ... until when I print from FM8.0 to the
Adobe PDF printer, the resultant PDF output makes the overprint area
knocked out.

We have tried FM8 with the Adobe PDF printer from Acrobat 6, Acrobat 8
Elements [the one shipped with FM8] and also the latest Acrobat 9
Professional - all with the same results.

Does anyone have any suggestions, recommendations, etc.?

Re: Structured Frame Help

2009-03-06 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi Rose...

Sorry to have not responded sooner.

If you're on FM7.1 and want to start messing around with DITA authoring,
you can use our free version of DITA-FMx (supports FM7.1 and 7.2). The
0.0 version of DITA-FMx provides you with structured apps and some
sample files and will let you get into DITA authoring in Frame. It
doesn't offer all of the features that are in the 1.0 version of
DITA-FMx (but provides more authoring features than you'll find in FM8).

When you do get FM8 up and running, you might want to check out DITA-FMx
1.0 which provides integrated access to the Open Toolkit plus lots of
nice authoring features. If you're using DITA-FMx (any version) you can
email us for help. :)

If you want to move to DITA in structured Frame, there are
two basic methods. With Frame alone, you can prepare a
conversion table and get DITA 1.0 structure in Frame 7.x
and 8. If you want DITA 1.1, which we highly recommend
over 1.0, you need Frame 9, *or* Leximation's DITA-FMx,
which now supports 1.1 in FM7.2, FM8 and FM9 (but not
in FM 7.1). Actually, you need DITA-FMx in any case,
just to fix Frame's numerous DITA bugs:
  http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/beta.php
(And Scott's support is excellent!)

You can also use Mif2Go to convert UNstructured Frame
files (from any version since 5.5.6) to DITA 1.1 (or
1.0, if necessary). Most people seem to find that much
easier than the conversion-table route (where you can't
get to 1.1 without FM9 in any case). There's a free
unlimited demo version of Mif2Go at:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

So what we'd suggest is use Mif2Go to get from your
FM 7.1 docs to DITA 1.1, then when you have Frame 8,
use DITA-FMx 1.0 to move the DITA files into (and
out of) structured Frame.

Once you are in structured Frame, you'll want to make
your PDFs within Frame, not via the DITA-OT, unless you
also want to become an XSLT and Java programmer. g
And you can still use Mif2Go to make on-line HTML help;
it's much faster and easier than the DITA-OT for that.

Re: Yen instead of bullets

2009-03-06 Thread Mike Wickham
I've tried setting the printer to Adobe PDF 7.0 and Adobe PDF 9.0.

Are these both on the same computer? Adobe doesn't support having more than
one instance total of Adobe Acrobat and/or Adobe Reader and/or the Distiller
that comes with FrameMaker on the same computer. Installing one can damage
the others. If you have programs/versions installed on the same computer,
uninstall them all and reinstall one version of Acrobat (preferable) or one
version of the Distiller that comes with FrameMaker only.

I don't know if doing that will solve your particular problem, but if not,
it will probably solve others that you haven't discovered yet. : )

Re: Numbering Lists for book

2009-03-06 Thread Mike Wickham
I am numbering graphics and tables in a multi-chapter book. The project
manager would like to generate one List of Figures and one List of
Tables (sequential numbers for each list).

How do I do that? Each chapter begins the numbering anew and the only
thing I can think of is to add a chapter prefix to the autonumbering in
the paragraph tag, but I'd rather have a much simpler list.

Create separate paragraph tags for tables and figures. In the autonumbering
properties of each assign a series label (any single printable character
followed by a colon). For example, place F: before the numbering properties
for the figure-holding paragraph format and T: before the numbering
properties of the table-holding paragraph. Then you can generate your List
of Tables or List of Figures by choosing the correct paragraph style in the
setup.

You also may want to have your project manager check out the document, The
Case for Simple Numbering, found here:

Re: FW: Framemaker image problem

2009-03-06 Thread Art Campbell
The reference to SP3 that you mentioned... a security fix in SP3
breaks objects imported with OLE. So those types of imports break.
The other graphics are probably imported as files, by reference, and
don't use OLE.

The fix is to replace the OLE objects by converting them to graphics
and importing them by reference.

They seem to be working fine in FM 9, which was released after the SP3
problem appeared.

I have a growing problem with imported images into FrameMaker 7.2.

I typically work off a network. A few months ago, I started getting an odd

I've tried to import Canvas files (.cnv), Visio files (.vsd), plain .jpgs and
plain .gifs, and always get the same result.

Our production manager found a previous post about Service Pack 3 of XP

 is not having this problem.

RE: searching for a section symbol

2009-03-06 Thread Les Smalley
The \f  (end-of-flow) special character search does not work correctly inside a
table in FrameMaker (at least, not on Windows) for at least versions 5 through
8.   However, you can use the hex equivalent - enter \x0b as the search text
(wildcards not needed) to find the end-of-flow in the cells.  For some reason,
it does not select (highlight) the EOF symbol (displayed as the section
character) if there is any text preceding it in the paragraph, but it does
place the insertion point there.

For your seach, you can find the string \x0b  (without quotes) and replace
with nothing to eliminate the terminal spaces, as the end of flow can not be
removed.

As I understand it there is no dialog operator to find that. I

If however you are seeking to navigate to the end of a flow of
text, I think there is a way to move the Insertion Point to the
end of a flow (IPEndOfFlow) but I can't think of it at the
moment. It may be necessary for you to define a keyboard command

In a table cell with View-Text Symbols turned on, how do I search
for a blank space following the last alpha-numeric character and
preceding the section symbol? I know the keyboard strokes to search
for the tab symbol, forced return symbol, end-of-paragraph symbol,
etc., but none of my quick-reference guides define the section symbol.

As Baruch indicated, Acrobat form fields or layers may be used with 2D
graphics.

Another option (which may actually be simpler to implement) is to use 3D data
from the CAD system and integrate it as live 3D in the PDF.

In http://www.microtype.com/showcase/3DAsst/PartEmphasis-3d.pdf
(which happens to demonstrate a printer ink cartridge), clicking a name
in a list highlights the corresponding part.

In http://www.microtype.com/showcase/3DAsst/SearchPartName.pdf ,
clicking a part displays its name; searching for a part name (complete or
partial, eg "plate") highlights the matching part(s).

Translations or Localisation of Framemaker content

I'll send

Hi Framers,

We have two rather large technical manuals (300+ pages each with text and
illustrations) that will need to be translated into Russian (90-95% of the
material is common to both manuals). The content involves low to mid-level
information on mechanical, hydraulic, high-power, low-power, fiber-optic,
and telemetry systems (and a kitchen sink). We have not had to do any
translations prior to this, so it is unknown territory. I'd appreciate any
comments about how the process works, how to make it successful, and what
pitfalls to avoid. You can contact me off-list if you prefer or if you have

Hi Klaus,

In FM 7, the Help says "\f" will find end of flow or end of table cell,
but a search for " \f" finds every space in the document without regard
to its position, and a search for "\f" brings up an error message.

When I have the courage to install my TCS 2 trial, I'll see what FM 9 does!

FrameMaker Plugin for Converting Text Insets and Variables To Text

2009-03-06 Thread Joseph
Hi all,

My technical publications team primarily uses text insets to single source
content across 8 documents, which combine consist of about 2,000 pages. When
we prepare are documentation for publication, there is another group in our
company that needs access to the Frame source and needs the frame source to
be all text (no text insets). We also need to, for other reasons, to convert
all our variables to text. Our current process is to copy the Frame source
to another folder and then to open up each file in each FM book and convert
it to text. Here's my question: is there a framescript/plugin that would
convert text insets and variables to text on the book level as opposed to
the document level?

Acrobat displays the
contours and elevation numbers even if the Acrobat "Overprint preview"
option is *not* enabled.

When I import the PDF into FrameMaker 7.1, the graphic is shown
correctly. When I print from FM7.1 to the "Adobe PDF" printer, the
resultant PDF output also displays correctly. When I import the PDF
into FrameMaker 8.0p277, the graphic is also shown correctly.

Everything is good so far ... until when I print from FM8.0 to the
"Adobe PDF" printer, the resultant PDF output makes the overprint area
knocked out.

We have tried FM8 with the Adobe PDF printer from Acrobat 6, Acrobat 8
Elements [the one shipped with FM8] and also the latest Acrobat 9
Professional - all with the same results.

Does anyone have any suggestions, recommendations, etc.?

Structured Frame Help

With Frame alone, you can prepare a
"conversion table" and get DITA 1.0 structure in Frame 7.x

And you can still use Mif2Go to make on-line HTML help;
it's much faster and easier than the DITA-OT for that.

Create separate paragraph tags for tables and figures. In the autonumbering

properties of the table-holding paragraph. Then you can generate your List
of Tables or List of Figures by choosing the correct paragraph style in the
setup.

FW: Framemaker image problem

2009-03-06 Thread Art Campbell
The reference to SP3 that you mentioned... a security "fix" in SP3
breaks objects imported with OLE. So those types of imports break.
The other graphics are probably imported as files, by reference, and
don't use OLE.

The fix is to replace the OLE objects by converting them to graphics
and importing them by reference.

They seem to be working fine in FM 9, which was released after the SP3
problem appeared.

searching for a section symbol

2009-03-06 Thread Les Smalley
The \f? (end-of-flow) special character search does not work correctly inside a
table in FrameMaker (at least, not on Windows) for at least versions 5 through
8.?? However, you can use the hex equivalent - enter \x0b as the search text
(wildcards not needed) to find the end-of-flow in the cells.? For some reason,
it does not select (highlight) the EOF symbol (displayed as the section
character) if there is any text preceding it in the paragraph, but it does
place the insertion point there.

For your seach, you can find the string " \x0b"? (without quotes) and replace
with nothing to eliminate the terminal spaces, as the end of flow can not be
removed.

Carol,

As I understand it there is no dialog operator to find that. I
guess that is the case because it is 'outside' the text flow and
therefore is not searched as a 'text symbol'. Your best option
is to search for end-of-paragraph symbols.

If however you are seeking to navigate to the end of a flow of
text, I think there is a way to move the Insertion Point to the
end of a flow (IPEndOfFlow) but I can't think of it at the
moment. It may be necessary for you to define a keyboard command
for this action(?).

(Sorry, you didn't say which version).
