RE: FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

2009-04-01 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

One plus about FM9 -- the User Guide actually has a long chapter
devoted to keyboard shortcuts for navigation, menu choices, equation
editor, and so on. Such documentation was woefully lacking
 in previous
 versions.

At least the comment regarding missing documentation
in previous versions is not true. In the FrameMaker 8
online help shortcuts are described at the very end in
Appendix B: Keyboard Shortcuts.

Best regards

Winfried

FM 8 bugs, anyone?

2009-04-01 Thread Menahem Rosen
Hi Framers,

Most of the posts are about bugs in FM 9, but I've been slow in
migrating our documentation team to FM 8. I've installed the patches, so
now we're running Ver. 8.0p277.

The most serious problem we've encountered is with conditional text.
When a paragraph is conditionalized and you press enter, the next
paragraph continues to be conditionalized, but the current paragraph
mark changes to unconditional. This is with all files, even new files
created from scratch in FM8, and on three different computers (two with
TCS and one with a straight FM8 installation). When working in FM7 (and
previous versions), pressing enter causes the next paragraph to be
unconditional.

I don't care whether or not the next paragraph is conditionalized or
unconditional by default, since I can see the color of the text. But if
the text of the current paragraph remains conditional, but the paragraph
mark changes to unconditional, it is difficult to notice -- and it
quickly screws up the document!

The other problem we have is with our arrowhead bullets. Someone
suggested that I delete the bullet from the Autonumber Format, then
insert it again with the ANSI code. I tried this, but the situation
remains the same: the wrong symbol is used.
In fact, when I try to manually insert the symbol in a line of text,
both with the ANSI code (0216) and with the key sequence (Esc % y), the
same wrong symbol appears.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Menahem Rosen

FM9 - Format Change Liste and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-01 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Framers,

FM9, WindowsXP -

for a docbook-XML based application I have to modify the EDD. In most cases
I use Paragraph Tags for formatting. Now I noticed that a Format Change List
doesn't work on elements that have been assigned a paragraph tag. (I want to
generally indent the contents of a container element without having to
define all new para tags). The Format Change lists works with elements that
don't have a special tag applied (i.e. Body). I've never encountered this
before, or didn't notice it, is it normal behaviour? (I didn't try to
reproduce in FM8 yet, I work on site and my client only has FM9 installed)

Re: FM9 - Format Change Liste and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-01 Thread Lynne A. Price
Wim,
I have just done a test in both FM8 and FM9 and confirmed that format
change lists are correctly applied even in an element that assigns a
paragraph format. The order of the format rules in such cases is important.
Make sure that the rule that applies the paragraph format precedes the one
that applies the format change list--otherwise the paragraph format will
reset all properties specified in the format change list.

Of Autonumbers, Symbols, and FM 9

2009-04-01 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I'm running into a seemingly strange phenomenon with FM 9. I'm working with a
lot of legacy documents that have formatting issues, and part of my workflow
involves importing and replacing formats using a template formatted the way I
wish it to be -- typically, with the very useful CleanImport plug-in.

In FM 9, I'm finding that when I do this import, I now get the unexpected side
effect that the symbol used in the Autonumber Format area of the Paragraph
Designer changes. For example:

Original Format

Font

Unintentionally Modified Format

Font

ð\t

Wingdings

š\t

Wingdings

à\t

Wingdings

‡\t

Wingdings

I'm not sure how or why this changes. I have developed a workaround. I go to my
source document, do a Global Update, Numbering Properties, for each of the
paragraph formats in question, applying this to all paragraphs in the source
document that have the individual tags in question. I am not changing the
formats in any way, simply re-applying them. Then I re-import the paragraph and
character formats to all of the remaining files, and then the paragraphs with
these various list bullets, for want of a better term, are all restored to
normalcy.

So it's not the end of the world, just an unwelcome extra step. Any ideas?

Subject: RE: FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

From: RJ Jacquez rjacq...@adobe.com

Hi Stuart, I'm looking into useful keyboard shortcuts and will report
back asap.

BTW, I'm a huge keyboard shortcut kind of fm user since I've been using
the product for a long time now, way before it became an Adobe product,
and I can share with you that I'm liking the new UI a lot, mostly
because of the new workspaces, which enable me to quickly save pods
where I need them and then save these into various workspaces, which I
can switch between them depending on what I'm doing.

What I like to see if the ability to assign keyboard shortcuts to each
workspace so that I can switch between them quickly. I have already
submitted this request internally.

I'm also a big fan of Alt+ keyboard shortcuts, so when I need to put
the focus on the Align Pod for example, I still use my old Alt+G+A and
then select the proper alignment from the Pod by using my arrow keys,
for example. Another good one for Anchored Frames is Alt+S+A. Once
there, I can use my Tab key and arrow keys, etc.

I'll keep you posted about more Pod-related keyboard shortcuts.

RE: Of Autonumbers, Symbols, and FM 9

2009-04-01 Thread Karen Mann
Thanks Jim, I had the same issue, legacy, importing etc but with the bullet and
symbol. When I applied the bullet tag my text went to Greek and the bullet
symbol was another symbol.
Ugh! I left out a step so when Megha tried to assist she could not.
Sorry Megha, I had so many deadlines and FM9 bugs were bouncing all over me.

In Paragraph Designer autonumber I highlighted the bullet, went to Character
map got the bullet, went to Character Designer sized the bullet and did Global
update, then did a global apply. Have been doing this for all docs. I did not
do a re-import. We do 99% legacy and they are very individual so most of the
time a template import is not effective.
I however do not have the CleanImport plug-in.

This Framers thing is the greatest!
Thanks all.

InDesign's PDF export offers security options. This suggests that it's
possible to create the appropriate security code when creating the
PDF. So, perhaps there's a FrameMaker add-on or plug-in that might
offer the same options.

Sorry to say, that's not necessarily so. As Dov has pointed out a number of
times, InDesign generates PDF internally, from its own PDF generation code,
while FrameMaker uses the Adobe PDF printer driver and the Distiller.

Re: FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

2009-04-01 Thread Mike Wickham
At the very least, give us a list of keyboard commands for UI manipulation.

I found some commands in wincmds.cfg:

 (Toggle) Between open document tabs?

Ctrl-F6 (ShowNextKit) and Shift-Ctrl-F6 (ShowPrevKit)
There is still some bugginess, though. The commands worked always in with
.FM files. Ctrl-F6 would cycle through the .FM files, then jump back to the
first and cycle again. Shift-Ctrl-F6 did the same in reverse.

Book files, pods, and panels seem to want to work the same way, but as a
conglomerate that is separate from the .FM files. That is, if one of them is
the focus, Ctrl-F6 can cycle between them all, but skips the .FM files. This
is where I found bugginess. The command would not jump to the Variables and
locked up. This may be related to the bug that keeps one from using the
Commands button in the Designer panels until the panel is first closed and
reopened, or switched to another designer panel page. I noticed that closing
and reopening the Variables pod made Ctrl-F6 work for it, too. When the
command cycles to the Paragraph Designer, there is no flashing cursor to let
you know.

Between pages of the Designer dialogs?

I noticed that the tab key does that, but it includes all the fields in the
currently displayed designer page as part of the cycle. So, depending on
whether one of the panel page icons is active or a field in the dialogue, it
may take quite a few tabs to move to a different designer panel page.

(That new feature that toggles UI visibility is absolutely terrific!! I
would use it dozens of times a day! ...but not if I have to use the
 wretched mouse.)

Esc S M s for standard screen mode.
Esc S M u for full screen with user interface.
Esc S M f for full screen.
Esc S M t to toggle screen mode.

Also these:

   Esc T S A (ToolBarShowAll)
   Esc T H A (ToolBarHideAll)

Re: Bullets in multiple columns

2009-04-01 Thread Alan Litchfield
Hi Steve,

Have you looked at creating multiple columns and then for the heading and
text that explains, define those as crossing-over all columns?

Done similar before, but it depends on how much is two column, one column,
etc. And if it is a lengthy section within an otherwise standard document, put
that into a separate file to simplify the administration of styles.

Sorry, working on the Mac at the moment and don't have FM available to me.

Cheers

Re: Bullets in multiple columns

Also, if your table spreads across pages it will not necessarily sort
correctly if the split moves up or down.

Controlling line spacing between table and paragraph is made more difficult
when using tables (you have more metrics to deal with than with simple
paragraph line-spacing).

I, too, think a borderless table is the way to go, especially if this need is
one-time or quite infrequent.

Yes, there are manual adjustments to make when the bullet list changes. One
decision you need to consider is whether to put one bullet item per cell (many
rows) or use a one-row table (however many columns you want across) with many
bullets per cell. The latter won't span pages, of course, but requires less
fiddling.

Alan's idea of using multiple columns has a great deal of merit if this will be
a quite long section, or if the need is frequent. But it really requires
setting up a template with this in mind -- changing all your everyday tags
(body, headings, numbered lists, ordinary bullets, etc., etc.) to span columns,
and creating special tags for multi-column use.

I've never done more than a short (less than half-page) multi-column list like
this, and that only rarely, so the table solution was far quicker and simpler
for me. YMMV, of course.

More than lipstick on a pig

2009-04-01 Thread Hedley Finger

Well, I installed the trial of FM9 beside FM8. 'Course double-clicking
a *.fm file launches FM9 but soon fixed that. Like the PODs for viewing
various useful things. Also ability to turn non-modal dialogues into
floating/tiled palettes. Support for DITA 1.1 double-plus good. Funky
grey styling to match other Adobe products: keeps marketing people off
the streets, don't it.

Now that you can see a list of all markers, perhaps Index markers can
also be toggled with a sorted display of all index entries in the book,
with editing of Level1IX headings automatically modifying all the
relevant markers, and other good indexing aids. P.S. Do IXgen, emDex,
GenDex, Index Tools Pro, etc. work with FM9? (Hey, Adobe, doesn't the
existence of all these indexing plug-ins, which each address only PART
of the indexing functionality required, tell you where your next
development efforts should be directed? Take a look at Cindex, Sky
Index, and Macrex to get a bit of a hint. Oh, and MultiTes too for
vocabulary control of team indexing. Even InDesign indexing interface
is better in some respects. -- Disillusioned in Melbourne)

It is not possible to control PDF security settings directly from FrameMaker.

You can, however, specify security settings in Distiller, that will apply
to *all* PDFs distilled (whether you use Save as PDF from FrameMaker, or
print to PS and distill).

In Distiller, choose Settings Security.
The options you see vary depending on the Acrobat version compatibility set
in in current Distiller settings.

FM9 - Format Change Liste and Paragraph Tags

2009-04-01 Thread Lynne A. Price
Wim,
I have just done a test in both FM8 and FM9 and confirmed that format
change lists are correctly applied even in an element that assigns a
paragraph format. The order of the format rules in such cases is important.
Make sure that the rule that applies the paragraph format precedes the one
that applies the format change list--otherwise the paragraph format will

Of Autonumbers, "Symbols," and FM 9

Font

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Then I re-import the paragraph and
character formats to all of the remaining files, and then the paragraphs with
these various "list bullets," for want of a better term, are all restored to
normalcy.

So it's not the end of the world, just an unwelcome extra step. Any ideas?

I'm also a big fan of "Alt+" keyboard shortcuts, so when I need to put
the focus on the Align Pod for example, I still use my old Alt+G+A and
then select the proper alignment from the Pod by using my arrow keys,
for example. Another good one for Anchored Frames is Alt+S+A. Once
there, I can use my Tab key and arrow keys, etc.

I'll keep you posted about more Pod-related keyboard shortcuts.

Of Autonumbers, "Symbols," and FM 9

This "Framers" thing is the greatest!
Thanks all.

Of Autonumbers, "Symbols," and FM 9 -- REPOST WITH TABLE FIX

2009-04-01 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Thank YOU, Karen, for reminding me I'm not alone with this problem...and of the

InDesign's PDF export offers security options. This suggests that it's
possible to create the appropriate security code when creating the
PDF. So, perhaps there's a FrameMaker add-on or plug-in that might
offer the same options.

Sorry to say, that's not necessarily so. As Dov has pointed out a number of
times, InDesign generates PDF internally, from its own PDF generation code,
while FrameMaker uses the Adobe PDF printer driver and the Distiller.

FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R.

Esc S M s for standard screen mode.
Esc S M u for full screen with user interface.
Esc S M f for full screen.
Esc S M t to toggle screen mode.

Also these:

   Esc T S A (ToolBarShowAll)
   Esc T H A (ToolBarHideAll)

I'm on my Mac now, so I can't check this out, but in FM 8 and earlier,
PgUp/PgDn would cycle through Paragraph, Character, and (I think)
Table designer property pages.

I use the same technique that Linda uses, and I want to add that if the list
changes, you need to make manual adjustments to the table to redistribute your

FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

I just checked and PgUp/PgDn does the same in FM9. However, the highlight
isn't changing to icon for the new property page.

Bullets in multiple columns

I, too, think a borderless table is the way to go, especially if this need is
one-time or quite infrequent.

Yes, there are manual adjustments to make when the bullet list changes. One
decision you need to consider is whether to put one bullet item per cell (many
rows) or use a one-row table (however many columns you want across) with many
bullets per cell. The latter won't span pages, of course, but requires less
fiddling.

Alan's idea of using multiple columns has a great deal of merit if this will be
a quite long section, or if the need is frequent. But it really requires
setting up a template with this in mind -- changing all your "everyday" tags
(body, headings, numbered lists, ordinary bullets, etc., etc.) to span columns,
and creating special tags for multi-column use.

I've never done more than a short (less than half-page) multi-column list like
this, and that only rarely, so the table solution was far quicker and simpler
for me. YMMV, of course.

2009-04-01 Thread Reid Gray
Yikes, it is possible. You are correct, Sir!

Looks like i have some Solaris admin to do.

Many thanks for your expert and perennial contributions to this list.

Is it possible that you are using the initial release of FM8.0? The
initial FM8.0 release handled link information incorrectly (missing two
angle brackets in the definition of the link's action in the PS file).

Check whether you can update FM8 (applying available patches).

If not, as a workaround: turn Tagged PDF on (without selecting specific
tags) in FM's PDF Setup dialog box

[note: I don't generally recommend producing "Tagged PDFs" from FrameMaker]

FM 9 Keyboard Shortcuts (ATTN: R. Jacquez!)

At least the comment regarding missing documentation
in previous versions is not true. In the FrameMaker 8
online help shortcuts are described at the very end in
Appendix B: Keyboard Shortcuts.

Best regards
