Does Mif2Go support that, or will it?

If I understand you correctly, you are talking about WebHelp
search, right? So you are comparing RH WebHelp with OmniHelp.
(For other Help formats, like HTML Help, search is built in so
that it is the same regardless of the tool used.)

One difference is that OmniHelp is Open Source (LGPL), and
RH WebHelp is proprietary. That means that with OmniHelp,
you can add any search engine you please, by modifying the
JavaScript. It's not trivial, but it's certainly possible.

For OmniHelp, our goal is to make it very fast to respond,
because people using Help systems want to find the info they
need quickly and get on with the job they are doing. So we
do all the search indexing at authoring time, and provide a
JavaScript array, ready to use, so that search even of large
docs is instantaneous. That approach pretty much limits you
to keyword search (including regex), which we feel is a very
reasonable price to pay for the high speed. We also feel that
an index, properly done, is superior to any form of search.

So we're not inclined to invest the time needed to implement
Natural Language search in OmniHelp ourselves. It would
slow down searches, especially on large doc sets, dramatically,
for a rather questionable benefit. However, anyone who really
wants it can certainly add it as an option, and redistribute
the result legally, which may not be possible under less
permissive licenses.

And, of course, there are quite a few other differences that
we consider much more significant... but that's your call. ;-)

HTH!

cross book links in PDF portfolios or combined books

2009-12-02 Thread Fred Wersan
I was experimenting a bit yesterday with PDF Portfolios and combined
books. Either method seems like a good way to give readers a central
starting point for a doc set. However I noticed that the xref links
between books, which work fine between individual book PDFs, did not
work within the portfolios or combined book file. (In fact, if the
portfolio is in the same directory as individual books, acrobat jumps
out to the individual book - which is what you would expect, I guess.)

Has anyone used portfolios or combined books, and if so, how have you
handled inter-book links? (I use Timesavers to make my inter-book links
work.)

Re: Auto-numbering figures across files

2009-12-02 Thread Art Campbell
Heidi,
You mention that you've set the numbering properties, but you don't say
where you've set them.

For a book to increment across component chapters, you must set them in the
book, not in a chapter(s). Select all component chapters in the book file,
right click, select Numbering, and verify that the numbering property for
the Paragraphs tab is set to increment.

Then Save and update the book.

Not awkward -- only simple math. :-) You can do it with either the table
format's Default Cell Margins or the paragraph format's Table Cell
properties.

In my template, I use a borderless table for code snippets, and its top
and bottom cell margins are 0 pts., so the spacing between rows is
controlled strictly at the pgf level.

My Code pgf format is 9 pt with 12 pt line spacing, and there's no space
above or below the pgf. 12 - 9 = 3. So Cell Margins Top (on the Table
Cell properties tab) is set to 3.0 pt (and Bottom is 0 pt). Bingo. Code
text in two adjacent rows is spaced exactly the same as in two adjacent
lines, which is exactly the same as two adjacent pgfs.

No calculator or trial and error was required. :-)

I should note that the Code pgf's Line Spacing is Fixed, which helps

Not quite, Fred. If you do only that, FM puts the first line of the pgf
at the very top of the cell (assuming Cell Vertical Alignment is Top),
regardless of the line spacing -- just as it does at the top of a text
frame. And the last line of the pgf sits at the bottom of the cell
(unless a min. row height changes that). The Line Spacing setting
affects only lines of text within the same cell. Lines of text in
adjacent cells will have no space between them.

You have to set the pgf's top cell margin to the same value as line
spacing minus font size (or you could do it with the bottom cell margin,
or split it between the two, but I prefer using space above to control
vertical spacing for almost everything). Or you can do it with the
table's default cell margins.

"Natural Language" search in OmniHelp ourselves. It would
slow down searches, especially on large doc sets, dramatically,
for a rather questionable benefit. However, anyone who really
wants it can certainly add it as an option, and redistribute
the result legally, which may not be possible under less
permissive licenses.

And, of course, there are quite a few other differences that
we consider much more significant... but that's your call. ;-)

I once had the problem describe here: http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker33.html
I guess the same may happen to anchored frames.

How about this idea:
- Convert all lines (paragraphs) of the code example to a table (one paragraph
becoming one
row.
- Use a table format with no horizontal ruling between the rows.
- The the automatic breakting between the rows should be no problem.

cross book links in PDF portfolios or combined books

2009-12-02 Thread Fred Wersan
I was experimenting a bit yesterday with PDF Portfolios and combined
books. Either method seems like a good way to give readers a central
starting point for a doc set. However I noticed that the xref links
between books, which work fine between individual book PDFs, did not
work within the portfolios or combined book file. (In fact, if the
portfolio is in the same directory as individual books, acrobat jumps
out to the individual book - which is what you would expect, I guess.)

Has anyone used portfolios or combined books, and if so, how have you
handled inter-book links? (I use Timesavers to make my inter-book links
work.)

Auto-numbering figures across files

2009-12-02 Thread Art Campbell
Heidi,
You mention that you've set the numbering properties, but you don't say
where you've set them.

For a book to increment across component chapters, you must set them in the
book, not in a chapter(s). Select all component chapters in the book file,
right click, select Numbering, and verify that the numbering property for
the Paragraphs tab is set to increment.

Then Save and update the book.

Auto-numbering figures across files

2009-12-02 Thread Emhoff, Heidi
Ahhh!!! Beautiful!! Thanks, Dave (and everyone else who responded). I didn't
know I had to update the book. I knew I was missing something simple. It would
have been nice if the FrameMaker help file/manual would have included a note or
something reminding us to update the on the page that talks about setting the
paragraph number in the properties. It just never occurred to me that I would
have to do that as the page numbers update right away when you set the
properties for them...

Anyway, thanks!!

Always,

Heidi Emhoff

Hi Heidi

You have to update the book for book-wide numbering to work (i.e. be
updated).

cheers

That sounds feasible: I will try it. It might be a little awkward getting the
'line' spacing right, but it's worth a go.

Klaus has pointed out that it's necessary to link the text frames that lie in

Text wrap in FrameMaker

You can if you take the image out of the frame and is eps with a clipping path,
fill set to none. You can see how this works by using one of the images from
the clipart folder>balloons and set your runaround to runaround contour.
Been a long time since we did it here as a test, but it did work.
I have not tried it in 9 or 8. Just 7.X.

One difference between FM and ID is that FM will only wrap around one side
of a column. That means if you want text on both sides of a graphic, you

Is it possible to do Text Wraps around pictures in FrameMaker, just like you
can do in InDesign?

I fear the answer is "no", but I thought I'd ask in case someone had an
