Incrementing, Balloon-type Numbered List pgf

2010-04-14 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Jim,

To add to Carol's recommendation: If you use a font like this, you could use
FrameScript to script the required key combinations for each number. So it
may not be as tedious to use a font like this as it sounds.

Jim, try the font named CombiNumerals Pro at
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/fontsite/combi-numerals-pro/ But it
won't necessarily work in an autonumbered paratag. The circled
numbers are created by key combinations. You would need to manually
number the steps using the font.

You can also do this quick modification:
Highlight/select the character. Then press the "ALT" and "Up" arrow key.
This will change the vertical position of the selected character(s).
Keep in mind that the line spacing will also adjust by default. To
remedy this, just choose the "Fixed" line spacing option in the
Paragraph Designer.

Hi, all.

I am using FM 9 (9.0p250) on a Vista system.

This document is written in English (specifically, Palatino Linotype for
general text and Consolas fonts in certain places) and have a need to
add the "recurring decimal" dot above a number. (There isn't any current
need to change this document into another language, by the way.)

For example, 10.999 where the last 9 has a dot on top to mean that there
are more 9's after there - ad infinitum.

How do I do this in a generic way? I.e., add above the last digit of the
number only, without having to do something oddball that could make it
tortuous (since the digit could be different in different places or
could be changed/edited later, etc.).

Thanks!

Would an equation work for you? I think it's Special > Equation, and
then you need to select Small, Medium, Large (based on font, not on
complexity). From there click Symbols, and choose the Diacritical. In
there select the very bottom leftmost symbol. Type a 9. Press Esc, m, p
(note that is case sensitive) and it should work. If needed, go with a
Medium or Large equation. I'd suggest you may want to build all of this
one number in the equation editor.

Hope that helps,

Bernard

Pagination problem

2010-04-14 Thread Tim J. Slager
Thanks, everyone, for being so helpful! This list is going to make my life
easier.

I sort of accidentally managed to get an acceptable solution for the time
being. I was poking in the right areas, at least. Right now, one of the pages
that I would rather have start on a right page starts on a left page.

I will go through all your suggestions until I feel confident that I know what
causes the problem and how to fix it (when I have the time).

Thanks again. tims

I assume that the pagination is set to double-sided (ie, left/right). If the
preface has several individual FM documents in it, my guess is that each
document is set to start on the right page, and the text of the troublesome
document ends on a right page. Therefore, FM adds a blank left page so the next
document can start on a right page.

Something else that can help speed up the translation to PDF: if any of
the artwork uses Illustrator's Effects, have the artist expand the
appearance of all objects, then do an object cleanup (Object > Path >
Cleanup) and resave. Reimport to FrameMaker. Especially if the objects
are appearing on each page, even a small improvement in processing time
will add up.

IIRC, FM 9 supports native Illustrator (.ai) file import. What file size

are they?

I'm using File> Import> File to import .ai files. The graphics files are
~1MB each.

I'd look at two things. First, if the AI files are really big, see if

they can be "optimized" to cut down the file size,

or try exporting to other formats.

Is 1MB really big? I've also tried JPG, with file sizes around 200K. Didn't
seem to make a big difference, though I didn't try doing a whole manual
that way.

Well, it strikes me as big for vector drawings, but I'm not very knowledgeable
about AI files. Are there gradient fills, or something similar?

I'd strongly advise against JPG, which should be reserved for continuous-tone
images, i.e., photographs. But you might do a timed test comparing AI files
with, say, PNG. Presumably, you're only talking about changing three or so
master pages, so comparing two complete versions of the manual shouldn't take
any longer than it takes to import page layouts to all the files in a copy of
the book.

Second, look at your Distiller joboptions settings. Depending on the

intended destination

of the PDF (on-screen vs. office printer vs. high-quality press), you may

be able to use a different joboptions file or

tweak the compression/downsampling settings.

I always use "Standard." I publish the PDF to the Web so it has to be high
enough quality in case customers want to print, but still keep the file
size reasonable.

In Distiller, select Settings> Edit Adobe PDF Settings to look at and tweak
the Standard.joboptions file (you can save changes under a different name). Or
just for grins, try using the Smallest File Size setting and compare the speed and
quality.

Oh, and one other thing. When you say ">1 hour print times," are you

talking about the time to create the PDF or the time to

print the PDF on an office printer? If the latter, check how much memory

the printer has and/or try different printers.

If the former -- wow. You _are_ using the Adobe PDF printer instance,

right?

Former. I use, from the book file, File/Save AS PDF, and select "Standard"
as the quality setting. Wow is right!

Unless you have Sundorne's SetPrint plug-in or you manually change it in Print
Setup, FM uses your system's default printer for Save As PDF -- that's the
chief cause of the problems people have with Save As PDF. Use only the Adobe
PDF printer for PDFs, either by manually changing to it or by using SetPrint to
automatically change FM's printer when it starts.

That's all I've got, so I'm directing the conversation back to the list in case anyone
else has something to contribute. "Wisdom of the crowd," you know. :-)

Pagination problem

Look at the pagination settings for the next file in the book. If the first
file ends, say, on a left page, but the next file is set up to start on a
left page, then FM adds an extra, blank, right page automatically to make
that happen.

Text Inset Disappears

2010-04-14 Thread Linda Camp
I am using Unstructured FrameMaker 8.0p266 on Windows XP. We have converted a
rather large users guide to include all text insets. When I opened a "main
file" containing text insets, it looked fine. However, when I double-clicked a
text inset, the text inset file that opened was entirely different. The
original text inset file is no longer in the directory. It has actually
disappeared from the network drive, but the original text from the inset is
still in the "main file". Has anyone else had anything similar to this?
Thoughts we had were:

- Is there a maximum number of text insets per document or book?

- While I was working in one "master file," another writer was working
in a different "master file" in the same book. Would this cause a problem?
Any experiences/suggestions/workarounds are appreciated!
Thanks

Have you gone to format>page layout>pagination and made sure the window is set

RE: Pagination problem

I'm not sure what you mean by "all text insets." By "main file," I assume you
mean the "container" file ( some call it "destination" file) into which the
text insets are imported. How large is large? How many is all?

In the container file, FM stores a "snapshot" of the text inset as it was the
last time FM updated it (opened the source file containing the text inset flow
to retrieve the latest version). So it's entirely possible for the container
file to display a text inset whose source file has since been deleted or moved.
Everything looks fine until the text inset is updated. :-}

When you double-click a text inset, the Text Inset Properties dialog shows you
the source file, type, status, etc. Verify the path and file name of the source
file. Is it maybe a mapped network drive (the path starts with, say G:), and
the mapping changed? (E.g., you moved the container file to a different PC that
maps the same network drive to H:.)

Of course, if the source file really is gone, it's gone... But nothing you
could do in the destination file would cause that. Someone would have to delete
it, move it, make the location where it's stored unreachable, or something like
that.

>
> - Is there a maximum number of text insets per document or book?

None that I'm aware of. I've gone into the hundreds without problems. Do you
have only one text inset in each source file? A text inset is simply a complete
text flow, and a single FM file can contain many disconnected text flows. I've
had dozens of related text insets in one source file, which simplifies file
management and may help with resource issues.

> - While I was working in one "master file," another writer was

Assuming by "master file" you mean a container file into which the text inset
is imported, this couldn't possibly cause anything to happen to the text inset
source file. Unless one of you selected Open Source in the Text Inset
Properties dialog and then edited or renamed the source file, nothing you do in
the container would affect the source. Not even updating -- it's strictly a
read-only affair, which makes no change to the source.

Bernard

http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/fontsite/combi-numerals-pro/ But it
won't necessarily work in an autonumbered paratag. The circled
numbers are created by key combinations. You would need to manually
number the steps using the font.

You're not using OLE (File > Import > Object), are you? Use File > Import >
File. What format are the graphics? IIRC, FM 9 supports native Illustrator
(.ai) file import. What file size are they?

I'd look at two things. First, if the AI files are really big, see if they can
be "optimized" to cut down the file size, or try exporting to other formats.
Second, look at your Distiller joboptions settings. Depending on the intended
destination of the PDF (on-screen vs. office printer vs. high-quality press),
you may be able to use a different joboptions file or tweak the
compression/downsampling settings.

Oh, and one other thing. When you say ">1 hour print times," are you talking
about the time to create the PDF or the time to print the PDF on an office
printer? If the latter, check how much memory the printer has and/or try
different printers.

If the former -- wow. You _are_ using the Adobe PDF printer instance, right?

Re: Pagination problem

2010-04-14 Thread Mike Wickham
I've tried deleting the page from the Special menu, but it doesn't stay. I
have tried various settings in Format > Page Layout > Pagination, but when
I open it again the Before Saving & Printing setting reverts to "Make Page
Count Odd."

Look at the pagination settings for the next file in the book. If the first
file ends, say, on a left page, but the next file is set up to start on a
left page, then FM adds an extra, blank, right page automatically to make
that happen.

Re: Pagination problem

2010-04-14 Thread Writer
I assume that the pagination is set to double-sided (ie, left/right). If the
preface has several individual FM documents in it, my guess is that each
document is set to start on the right page, and the text of the troublesome
document ends on a right page. Therefore, FM adds a blank left page so the next
document can start on a right page.

Set (and trouble-shoot) pagination for a book component in the book window. The
most likely explanation for your problem is that FM must add the extra page
because of the 1st Page Side setting of the file that _follows_ this one.

Thanks

Graphic Elements in Frame 9 Template

2010-04-14 Thread Pete Roebber
I am attempting to implement my company's new design for manuals in a
Frame template and am running into a problem. The new design calls for a
graphical element running across the bottom of every page. Another
graphical element appears on every chapter title page. A third graphical
element appears at the top of every left-hand page and a fourth graphical
element appears at the top of every right-hand page. So every page has at
least two graphical elements, not counting any graphics that might appear
in the text.

I have imported the graphical elements by reference into the master page
for each page type. The graphical elements are Adobe Illustrator graphics.

Although the pages look like they are supposed to, it takes ~6x as long to
print a manual to PDF using this template and the PDF file size is ~3x
larger than it was using the old template that had only one small
graphical element on each chapter title page. Is there a better way to
implement this design, or do I have to reconcile myself to >1 hour print
times and mach larger PDFs?

Thanks,

Pete

Pagination problem

PS: In some cases, the third page shows up only after I update the book.

I'm new to FM, so please assume user ignorance...

FM 7.2, Windows XP

I have a preface with a number of FM documents in it. The first document should
have two pages but insists on having three. When I delete the third page, save
the file, and then open it again, the third page is back. This messes up my
page numbering for the rest of the preface.

I've tried deleting the page from the Special menu, but it doesn't stay. I have
tried various settings in Format > Page Layout > Pagination, but when I open it
again the Before Saving & Printing setting reverts to "Make Page Count Odd."

I've wasted too much time trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

Thanks. tims

How do I add a recurring decimal dot above the last digit of a number?

2010-04-14 Thread bern...@publishingsmarter.com
Would an equation work for you? I think it's Special > Equation, and then you
need to select Small, Medium, Large (based on font, not on complexity). From
there click Symbols, and choose the Diacritical. In there select the very
bottom leftmost symbol. Type a 9. Press Esc, m, p (note that is case sensitive)
and it should work. If needed, go with a Medium or Large equation. I'd suggest
you may want to build all of this one number in the equation editor.

Hope that helps,

Bernard
