Nothing you can do about this in FrameMaker (unless an add-on is being
used, see http://www.microtype.com/ImprovePDF10.html for more info/examples).

There is a local viewing preference in Acrobat/Reader that controls whether
a linked PDF opens in a new window: Edit > Preferences > General -- turn
off "Open cross-document links in same window". Preferences apply to the
Acrobat/Reader copy where the PDF is viewed, but not to the PDF file itself.

In Acrobat, you can modify the individual link property so that it opens
the target file in a new window (this link property is available within
Acrobat starting with version 6).

Solaris only IIRC. Will not run on Linux of any flavour.

The 5.5.6 FM version had a die-date (can't remember what it was) -
unless you had access to a binary editor of course. It needed Redhat
(again IIRC).

Can the spelling checker be trusted?

2010-05-24 Thread Mike Wickham

> entire book. Did not find error.

Once FM has checked a paragraph, it marks it so that time will not be wasted
checking it again, unless the paragraph itself changes. So if the word is
included in a paragraph that has already been checked and passed, FM will
not find and flag the word. You can reset this behavior by going to Edit>
Spelling Checker and clicking on the Dictionaries button. There you will
find a checkbox for "Mark All Paragraphs for Rechecking." This clears the
"already checked spelling" flags in the document. The downside is that the
spelling checker will then refind any words that you checked before, but
passed without actually adding them to your personal dictionary-- and you
will be presented with them again.

Another thing to check is the paragraph format holding the word. Go to
Paragraph Designer> Fonts tab> Language setting. If it is set to "None," FM
will not check that paragraph for spelling, no matter what you do. Set it to
a language and FM will use the appropriate language dictionary to check it.

Great ideas, thank you. Sadly

I did do the option to reset all paragraphs. I even made sure to tear the pod
away from the side so the sub-pod dialog might work.

The paragraph is set to US English. There are no overrides on it.

The word can't be in a dictionary since the spelling checker correctly finds it
when the cursor is placed in the same paragraph with the offending word.

hypertext command "message openfile" but keep first file open

2010-05-24 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I'm trying to do the following:

Insert a message client hypertext command in file A which opens file B. Both
files will be PDF documents (yes, I use PDF for presentations instead of
PowerPoint).

I'm currently using the following command:

message openfile C:/temp/fileB.pdf

The command works but the problem is that file A closes when file B is
opened.

Does anyone know how to keep file A open?

Thanks

It does! It says it's name.no wait, this is Monday. Drat.

I tried putting the cursor in various places around the miscreant word. It
finds it only if it is in the same paragraph. The paragraph is only four lines
long, but breaks across two pages. The cursor must be before the word, but not
after. It doesn't matter which page.

Frame's spelling checker does not appear to work backwards.

There's also an option under "Dictionaries" to "Mark All Paragraphs for
Rechecking." It's an odd dialog box, full of rather unrelated radio button
options. Anyway, I tried the "Mark All Paragraphs for Rechecking" option, but
it didn't make any difference.

Closing Frame and restarting it didn't help either, though it does make my
scroll bars work again for a time.

Frame seems rather unbelievably buggy sometimes considering what I paid for it.

RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-24 Thread Lou Martindale
I had this problem earlier this spring. I believe I was using Frame 6.0 at
the time. I found that renaming the file by just removing the number suffix
I could open the file, but had missing graphics. After long, agonizing trial
and error by my IT guy, we found out it was not corrupted graphics, it was
XP Sp3. We tried the hot fix and it didn't help. Finally I was upgraded to
Frame 9. I was able to import my missing graphics without any problems and
no more weird file names.

The down side was my copy of Frame was so old I couldn't upgrade and I had
to purchase a new copy at a pretty significant amount. I was pretty unhappy
about that as I was doing just fine with Frame 6.

Hope this helps.

Yikes!

I was preparing a book for PDF production when I noticed a spelling error: include was
spelled "imclude". I knew I had spell-checked the book numerous times and
didn't understand why this was still there.

I tried a few things:

Starting from a file at the beginning of the book, did Spell Check for entire
book. Did not find error.

Starting from first page of the chapter that contained the error, did Spell
Check for the document. Did not find the error.

Positioned the cursor in the same sentence as the error and did Spell Check. Found the error.

I have been caught off-guard a couple of times with typos in the past few months. As a result, I've been especially diligent about running the spelling checker. I am not sure what to think about this, but my confidence in the spelling checker is declining rapidly.

I am not thrilled about checking every page in a book.

Any ideas what would cause this? The word in question is in the first line of
a page and the paragraph has an anchored frame. Other than that, it's just a
word in a sentence.

character into any other file and the same thing would happen .. but if
I saved the file to MIF, there was nothing apparently special about it
.. just a simple period.

I saved the period off in a file for later use (don't ask) .. but
somewhere along the way it was lost (maybe it found its way to your file).

I suppose it's possible that you have a similar situation .. see if you
also can't search for this misspelling .. and see how far away from the
word you can move the cursor and have it still found. Try searching
backwards. Who knows.

I've not seen this behavior again in FM, so I don't think it's a serious
problem, but maybe it's making a resurgence. Or maybe this is a totally
different problem.

Cheers,

...scott

RE: Can the spelling checker be trusted?

2010-05-24 Thread Owen, Clint
We are still on FM 7.0, so this might not be applicable. We are also
still on Win XP

The behavior of spell checker described below sounds a lot like
something that used to happen when I was using spell check and
find-and-replace over and over on a very large document with lots of
instances of the search objects. After working intensely for several
hours, FM would suddenly stop finding things that I knew were there,
such as words misspelled certain ways or just text that needed to be
replaced. It was as if some buffer had become filled up and it could no
longer hold the found items, so they were ignored. If I closed all of
the files and restarted FM everything went back to normal.

SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-24 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Gillian,
I had this problem with files that were created with older versions of visio,
that were *embedded* in my fm file. I had this particular problem especially
when I tried changing the conditional text settings. In one of the individual
files, I had isolated the problematic figure and then had to delete it in order
to work with the file. I found an older copy of the figure in my backup files
somewhere.
For these files that you mention with the funny hex endings - if you open that
file in fm you'll see that one or more of you figures is shown as a grey box.
That may give a clue as to the corrupted figure.

As far as the books go, I also had trouble with saving books as PDF when
changing conditional text settings. I tried the windows hotfix, but was still
having other problems (I'm running XP/SP2- TCS 1.0). In the end, IT just
reformatted my disk - so everything so far is ok - haven't done major
book-building yet, then I'll know for sure if all is ok.

SAving frame files with numbers at the end

Frame 9 Spell Check Anomalies

I, too, have noticed these "sliced" up suggestions in FM9 as the default

I'm spell checking a relatively big chapter with lots of typos. And I'm
noticing that the spell checker in my new installation of Frame 9 is
annoyingly suggesting nonsensical sequences of letters as the first,
default suggestion. For example, in my doc the word "functions" is
misspelled as "funtions" -- and the spell checker's default suggestion
is "fu nt ions." These sliced up suggestion are, as often as not, my
default correction suggestions for typos. The correct suggestion is
usually next in the list, but that require the dreaded extra click to
select it and move on to the next misspelled word. I've never seen this
kind of funky spell checking behavior before. Have any of you?

Could it be related to my importing of my old saved dictionary from Frame 8?

Thanks,
Tony

Thanks,
Tony

RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

Orly.
