Fwd: PDF Distribution: Packaging with Product versus Internet Access
Hi all, I publish hundreds of pages of documentation using FrameMaker. I also use Robohelp to generate help systems. Does anyone know of IT companies that ONLY distribute documents about their products via the internet and are NO longer distributing documentation by installing it with the product? Off the top of my head, I believe Microsoft and Adobe do this with some of their products. For a variety of reasons, I am considering moving away from bundling documents with the software's installation package and instead only distributing the docs via a internet portal. If I did this, I would no longer be at the mercy of the engineering team's agile development life cycle. This means I would 1) have significantly more time to document features 2) the code is frozen so features will always be completed by the time I start documenting them and out of date screenshots would be a thing of the past and 3) SMEs would have more time to review my documents. However, to make this sell to project management, I need some evidence that other IT companies are ONLY distributing documents via the internet and are NO longer distributing documentation by installing it with the product. Re: Missing graphics links
If this is really what you did: "I recently copied the main folder with the Frame files and the graphics folders - all together - into a new folder and changed the name on the new folder." That's how you broke it. You took Frame files with graphics in a different folder and copied them all into the same folder? Why don't you go back and fix that, then you won't have anything else to worry about? If you don't fix what you did wrong, all you should have to do is open each Frame file, when it asks where the graphic is, point to the new location and update it to use the new location. You will have to do this for every Frame file in the book. Although if this is also true you can't even do that: "Since I am now making another version of the same book - nearly the same info - I have also changed the name of the file in the new folder." What file? the graphics files? You moved all the files into one folder then changed the names of all the graphics files and you expected that to work?? Re: Disappearing conditions in x-refs
What do you mean by this: " e.g. "Installing the Client" on page 82 -- is conditioned Print Only. Update the book file and show Help Only. You may get 'on page 82' or the entire x-ref now unconditional. The problem appears to be cumulative." You mean you're still in Frame correct, and not processing the help? If so then you probably have two cross references, one for the heading and one for the page number and your condition tag ends with the heading. And this doesn't mean much: "> Some complexity was engineered into the the x-ref definition (by a wizard > long ago gone), so that Webworks could omit page references," Please explain. WebWorks will omit page number references all on its own. You don't need "a wizard" to do that.
