You can't just click. In the FM file (unless you make it View Only first),
you have to Ctrl-Alt-Click. When you hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys, the
cursor should turn into a hand pointing.

As you were not aware of that key/click combination, you may also not
realize that it works on cross-references, TOC entries, Index entries
(the page numbers), etc.; essentially, anything that becomes a hyperlink
in a PDF. Very handy...

You should be able to add a list of references that shows the files to your
book, assuming you imported the graphics by reference.

Rather than checking the fit in frames manually, I would use a
FrameScript Rick Quatro has one that does this, and other FrameScripters
should be able to write one.

... other Plug-Ins for FM 9

2010-12-15 Thread Georg Eck
TOOLBOX for FrameMaker a collection of plug-ins are available for every
FrameMaker release since FM5
and every release is still available (www.toolboxforme.com).

Important:
Hypothetical you could put every plug-in for FM 5 > 6 > 7 > 8 > 9, but
not truly.
1. Adobe had changed the FDK for every release.
2. Every FrameMaker had changed or added some features (unicode, undo,
book in book...)
3. Every compiled release of TOOLBOX give you full speed.

Therefore, please don't copy plug-ins, please download
TOOLBOX for FrameMaker 7 or for 8 or for 9.
It's really easy to install TOOLBOX with installer and activate it
-ready & go.

Note: January 2011: FINALYSER will give you more flexibility
for plug-ins and scripts together - soon.
FINALYSER - ADD.EXPAND.CUSTOMIZE

---

2. In general, what is the best way to move plug-ins to a new
installation of FM? Any guidelines to follow? Errors to avoid? Any
earlier FM plug-ins that have proven notoriously problematic? I've got
Archive, RoboMIF, SetPrint, Paragraph and Table Tools, the freeware
pieces of Toolbox, and perhaps one or two others.

Thoughts and insights gratefully accepted :)

Because this list is often on auto-pilot with the owner not especially
active, I'd like to put forward the idea:

When vendors step forward with a recommendation for a plug-in,
auxiliary program, post processor, or other FM tool that solves a
problem, that they mention their association with the product. Either
a line in the post / recommendation or a line in their .sig that
identifies the provider of information as someone who has an interest
in the product.

Like everyone else, I think, I value both the tools and the special
expertise that vendors bring to the list and their products (I
certainly use enough of them!).
But I think it's only fair that they clearly identify themselves to
make things very clear to posters who may not have been on the list
long enough to identify them by email address.

FM 9: PDF Bookmarks include TOC headings

2010-12-15 Thread Spectrum Writing
A nice little extra/quirk when setting up bookmarks is that they can be set
both a that the book level and at the document level. If you check the TOC,
you should see that you have requested these three paragraphs to be
bookmarks. If you clear these selections, all should be fine for you.

Subject: FM 9: PDF Bookmarks include TOC headings

This is in a Frame 9 book that includes three files: title.fm, TOC.fm,
and doc.fm (names changed for simplicity).

doc.fm has heading paragraph tags H1, H2, H3, etc., and TOC.fm's
contents use H1TOC, H2TOC, H3TOC, etc.

When I save the book as PDF, I get the setup dialog in whose Bookmarks
tab I can choose which headings to include as bookmarks.

I choose H1, H2, and H3. H1TOC, H2TOC, and H3TOC are not options. But my
PDF bookmarks include all H1TOC, H2TOC, and H3TOCs anyway, even though I
don't want them. When I click them, they just take me to the
corresponding line in the TOC, which is pretty useless.

How do I stop TOC headings from being included in my PDF bookmarks?

Thank you,

RE: FM 9: PDF Bookmarks include TOC headings

Thank you,
Tim Pann

It's an undocumented feature of FrameMaker that you can select
*additional* paragraph tags to be picked up as PDF bookmarks -- over and
above the tags seleted in the book's PDF setup -- on a file-by-file
basis by selecting them in an individual file's PDF Setup dialog.

If you open the TOC.fm file and look at *it's* PDF setup (rather than
the book file's PDF setup), you'll find that the H1TOC, H2TOC, etc. tags
are specified to generate PDF bookmarks. Just clear those selections and
save the file, then generate your PDF and you should see that the
unwanted bookmarks are no longer there in the PDF.

Hi Tim,

Go into each individual document, and choose Format > Document > PDF Setup,
and make sure the bookmarks are correct in each individual file. Save the
changes to the documents, then try the making the PDF from the book again.

RE: Disclaimers....

2010-12-15 Thread VLM TechSubs
Great idea, Art!

I second this suggestion, and I would add the additional suggestion that all
the vendors do so in the first line/sentence of the text. Something like:

I am the developer of / represent the developer of / sell / the product(s)
discussed below.

Then continue with the rest of the message. This approach makes the
situation abundantly clear from the top. IMO, anything buried farther down
will be missed by some people, or will appear somewhat out of context.

To me, this is like any other presentation of information, simply frame
what's coming, then share it.

Simple! Straightforward. And clear.

Because this list is often on auto-pilot with the owner not especially
active, I'd like to put forward the idea:

When vendors step forward with a recommendation for a plug-in, auxiliary
program, post processor, or other FM tool that solves a problem, that they
mention their association with the product. Either a line in the post /
recommendation or a line in their .sig that identifies the provider of
information as someone who has an interest in the product.

Like everyone else, I think, I value both the tools and the special
expertise that vendors bring to the list and their products (I certainly use
enough of them!).
But I think it's only fair that they clearly identify themselves to make
things very clear to posters who may not have been on the list long enough
to identify them by email address.

Disclaimers....

Yes, a Good Thing to do!

Separately, my take is that they are generally pretty clear careful about this

Because this list is often on auto-pilot with the owner not especially active,
I'd like to put forward the idea:

When vendors step forward with a recommendation for a plug-in, auxiliary
program, post processor, or other FM tool that solves a problem, that they
mention their association with the product. Either a line in the post /
recommendation or a line in their .sig that identifies the provider of
information as someone who has an interest in the product.

Like everyone else, I think, I value both the tools and the special expertise
that vendors bring to the list and their products (I certainly use enough of
them!).
But I think it's only fair that they clearly identify themselves to make things
very clear to posters who may not have been on the list long enough to identify
them by email address.

Cheers,
Art

FM8 with SP3/FM9 SP3 or Windows7 - any problems? [P]

2010-12-15 Thread Milton, Cynthia
Classification: Serco Public

I have FM9 + XP SP3.

When importing Visio stuff I've found the best solution for me is to
export the Visio drawings as SVG for import to FM. Gives me a good
result. OLE's a nice idea, but can be a liability.

YMMV.

CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

I've always just copied the \Plugins directory, but I haven't gone directly
from 7 to 9 -- I also had 8 in the path and went from 7 > 8 and 8 > 9.
So I'd make a copy of the naked 9 \Plug-ins directory, then add the contents of
the 7 directory and see what happens. Because a number of years have elapsed, I
wouldn't expect all of them to work, but that said, most plug-ins will make the
leap, although those that do text manipulation that includes Unicode characters
or file format manipulation probably have been re-engineered and re-released.

Worst case is you need to visit the sites of the plug ins that don't work and
download a newer version.

I'd make sure you have all FM updates installed before you play with the
plugins.

You can't just click. In the FM file (unless you make it View Only first),
you have to Ctrl-Alt-Click. When you hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys, the
cursor should turn into a hand pointing.

R: R: FM / how to identify new images/

2010-12-15 Thread Anton David
I tried many times with Create Hyperlinks option enabled, but I continue
getting a simple text - not clickable - listing such as
./../Graphics/sl_ic_concepts.gif @ 100 dpi 6

../../Graphics/sl_ic_tasks.gif @ 115 dpi 6

../../Graphics/sl_ic_ref.gif @ 120 dpi 7

../../Graphics/sl_ic_glass.gif @ 115 dpi 7

any idea?

Disclaimers....

2010-12-15 Thread Art Campbell

Cheers,
Art

FM / how to identify new images/

2010-12-15 Thread Jerilynne "MamaRed" Knight
Hi Anton

When you generate the LIst, there is an option to turn on hyperlinks (it is
available on the "Set Up List of References" window where you selected the
option of Imported Graphics"

If that wasn't turned on the first time you generated the list, you can turn
it on now, regenerate the list and then should be able to click and entry
and it will take you to the source.

If you can't get that to work, let me know and I'll see what I can do to
lend a hand.

Many blessings

CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

2010-12-15 Thread Art Campbell
I've always just copied the \Plugins directory, but I haven't gone
directly from 7 to 9 -- I also had 8 in the path and went from 7 > 8
and 8 > 9.
So I'd make a copy of the naked 9 \Plug-ins directory, then add the
contents of the 7 directory and see what happens. Because a number of
years have elapsed, I wouldn't expect all of them to work, but that
said, most plug-ins will make the leap, although those that do text
manipulation that includes Unicode characters or file format
manipulation probably have been re-engineered and re-released.

Worst case is you need to visit the sites of the plug ins that don't
work and download a newer version.

I'd make sure you have all FM updates installed before you play with
the plugins.

FM 9: PDF Bookmarks include TOC headings

2010-12-15 Thread Tim Pann

Thank you,
Tim Pann

FM / how to identify new images

2010-12-15 Thread Art Campbell
You should be able to add a list of references that shows the files to
your book, assuming you imported the graphics by reference.

Rather than checking the fit in frames manually, I would use a
FrameScript Rick Quatro has one that does this, and other
FrameScripters should be able to write one.

Re: CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

2010-12-15 Thread Mike Wickham
* Mike mentions a problem with CudLog on Structured Maker 8. I was not
aware of
any problems. Hopefully Mike can communicate with me offline to clear
that up.

Hi, Chris, in addition to the offline note, I thought I should post a
follow-up here. First, I made an error saying that I had had a problem with
cudlog.dll and FM8. It was actually FM9. A note I had made to myself said
that the issue was cleared up with version 1.0.0.1. of the plugin. Yet, I
did not have it installed. I'm not sure why. Probably I meant to test
further and forgot. In any case, I just reinstalled cudlog.dll and the
problem of lost file histories in FM9 is, indeed, no longer there. So I'm
going to leave it in place. (Note: this is the 06/12/2009 version of the
file. I have not tried the new ones you just posted.)

So, basically, everyone can ignore my previous post about a cudlog.dll
incompatibility with FM9, as long as the file version is v1.0.0.1 06/12/2009
or higher.

Hi Anton

When you generate the LIst, there is an option to turn on hyperlinks (it is

CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

So, basically, everyone can ignore my previous post about a cudlog.dll
incompatibility with FM9, as long as the file version is v1.0.0.1 06/12/2009
or higher.

Disclaimers....

2010-12-15 Thread Liz Fraley
Sounds like a great idea.

I think it's generally good form for companies and people to declare their
affiliations whenever they're talking about any product/service be it in an
email, blog post, their website, whatever.

So many do not; and, even when folks post from their work email address,
affiliations are not always mentioned by name. (Not like someone whose email
address includes @adobe.com. I mean, that's a bit more obvious.)

Consultants, especially those who claim neutrality, are the worst offenders,
actually. It's very, very rare to see any of them provide a disclaimer that
says something like, "We only ever recommend X, Y, and Z products because
they give us leads and vendor K won't."

"What are your affiliations?" is a fair question for anyone.

Liz

Re: CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

Disclaimers....

2010-12-15 Thread Art Campbell

Cheers,
Art

RE: FM8 with SP3/FM9 SP3 or Windows7 - any problems? [P]

2010-12-15 Thread Milton, Cynthia
Classification: Serco Public

I have FM9 + XP SP3.

When importing Visio stuff I've found the best solution for me is to
export the Visio drawings as SVG for import to FM. Gives me a good
result. OLE's a nice idea, but can be a liability.

YMMV.

You should be able to add a list of references that shows the files to your
book, assuming you imported the graphics by reference.

Rather than checking the fit in frames manually, I would use a
FrameScript Rick Quatro has one that does this, and other FrameScripters
should be able to write one.

Hi,

do you know 'TOOLBOX for FrameMaker'? NO?
There are some features are great for imported images:
+ you can save copied images in their original format like eps, jpg, ...
+ you can find all referenced images with book transfer in a report
+ you can copy all files (images, ...) with a book to another folder
+ you can ...

Test it:
Download TOOLBOX (www.toolboxforme.com) , install it (trial) - ready &
go.

Hi Anton,

Create a List of References for imported graphics. In FM9 with the book file
open, choose Add > List of > References and then choose to include Imported
Graphics in the LOR. Should give you what you're looking for.

Re: ... other Plug-Ins for FM 9

- GEorg

---

Re: FM / how to identify new images

2010-12-15 Thread David Spreadbury
Anton,
One possible choice would be Bruce Foster's Archive plugin.

Archive actually creates a new folder with all referenced piece-parts, which
you probably don't need, but the archive.log file is what you could immediately
put to use.

The archive log lists all referenced files, whether they be graphics or text
insets.

You might want to check out Lin Sims list of FrameMaekr plugins at
http://www.microtype.com/resources/FM_utilities_all_v3.1.pdf.

There could be something as good, or even better.

RE: FM / how to identify new images

2010-12-15 Thread Michael Pearson

Hi Anton,

Create a List of References for imported graphics. In FM9 with the book file
open, choose Add > List of > References and then choose to include Imported
Graphics in the LOR. Should give you what you're looking for.

Mike

Re: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

The CEO of my company has asked that I look into eBooks and the EPUB

I know nothing about this, so I'm on a real learning curve here. The first
thing I notice is that Adobe is pushing InDesign as the vehicle to create
eBooks. This is a real stumbling block for me. We've got over 15 years
invested in FrameMaker and all our docs are created and maintained in
FrameMaker. My "books" are delivered as PDFs. I am loathe to shift from
FrameMaker to InDesign given our extensive history with FrameMaker.

My question is, can I create eBooks and EPUB documents from FrameMaker, or
am I truly locked in to InDesign for the eBooks and EPUB standard? If I
can use FrameMaker, where would I find information about using FrameMaker
to create eBooks and EPUB documents?

Richard,

ePublisher Pro has been able to create ePUB output since the 2010.2
release. This is fairly straight-forward to accomplish with FrameMaker
source documents. ePublisher handles all ePUB 2.0 packaging
requirements and offers support for configuring splash page images under
various readers.

You can check out a segment on building ePUB deliverables with
ePublisher here:

  47:50 into the session

The segment also discusses inherent limitations you may encounter with
various ePUB readers and demonstrates ePublisher options to address them
(large image handling, wide table layouts, etc.)

I need some immediate help. FrameMaker 8 preferred. 9 is ok but you will have
to save back. User manual updates based on wireframes.

Please reply if you are immediately available with your rate and UM samples.

Re: CudSpan and other Plug-Ins for FM 9

2010-12-15 Thread Chris Despopoulos
Hi all... I have been out of the mainstream for quite a while -- apologies for
any inconvenience. A quick answer is, I compiled, *briefly* tested, and posted
some freeware plugins for Maker 9 on my site. (http://cudspan.net/plugins/)
Try them out, but please understand that I haven't been able to test them
exhaustively.

A few points.
* Mike mentions a problem with CudLog on Structured Maker 8. I was not aware
of
any

problems. Hopefully Mike can communicate with me offline to clear that up.
* I apologize, but I've been very busy for the last 5 years or so. Plugin dev
business wasn't

paying the rent, so I had to expand beyond just FrameMaker development. This
has

resulted in my plugins languishing. Again, apologies.
* I have not come to terms with the Maker 9 GUI. The new windowing paradigm
makes

most if not all of my plugins very UGLY. I count on Maker documents for
logging,

for generating data files that later processes use, and for generating a rich
GUI. The

Adobe GUI for Maker 9 and beyond takes away any control I have over how
documents

display, and the results are just unacceptable. I have not figured out how
to
work around

that. My inclination is to just launch a completely different line of
plugins
that do very different

things, and interact with Maker and the user in very different ways. Dare I
say, stay tuned?
* I will try to maintain my freeware in whatever ways make sense. I don't give
much

to the world, and I'd like to keep this going at least a little bit.
TocBreaker in particular

is a favorite of mine... I don't want to let these tools fade away.
* Freeware is free, hooray. The next time you catch yourself buying garbage,
JUST SAY NO.
