Links not working: Frame 8 to PDF to external file

2010-12-23 Thread David Spreadbury
Tina,
I wonder why you are using Frame to create the? front end, what sounds like a
Table of Contents. Not that Frame isn't fully capable of ding it. Me, I would
have created an HTML file of links.

But that aside, I wonder if you have the complete path, including drive letter,
in your FM links? Your CD is, obviously, a different drive address, so links to
C:\ aren't valid anymore or is the Attachments folder in the same relative
position (c:\PDF-file\Attachments on the CD is E:\PDF-file and E:\Attachments,
or some variant) to the FM->PDF file as it was on your system?

Hi everyone,

Frame version: 8.0p277

Adobe Acrobat Pro version: 8.2.5

I'm creating a giant PDF file (in Frame) of conference papers for a
professional conference. It will be burned on a CD. I have my giant PDF, and
I have a folder called Attachments. Inside the Attachments folder are a
whole load of PowerPoint Show files (.pps)

GiantPDF.pdf

Attachments

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Filename.pps

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Filename_2.pps

(etc. etc.)

In Frame, I created hyperlinks with this setting:

Special > Hypertext

Command: Message Client

Syntax box:

Message openfile Attachments/Filename.pps

(this seemed like the correct syntax for a relative pathname, based on
several internet resources)

On my computer, this works great. I can create my PDF, I can move my folder
structure elsewhere on my computer and things work.

When I create a CD and take it to a different computer, my giant PDF can't
find the PPS files. Why?

All internal links within the PDF work fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Would love any assistance.

Are the .fm files from which you create the GiantPDF located in the
folder that contains the Attachments folder? If not, FM may be
substituting absolute paths.

My first guess would be that there's something wrong on the computer
you're using to test...
Are you getting an error message, and if so, what?

Does your test computer(s) have PPT installed and the file association
is set properly?
I believe that Microsoft stopped using the PPS extension as a default
with Office 2007, so if a newer version of PPT is installed on your
test machine, it may not be mapping to PPT properly (I think 2007 and
2010 use ppsx -- for XML). So if the file association on your test
computer doesn't map .pps to Powerpoint, it may not open the target
file properly.

Links not working: Frame 8 to PDF to external file

2010-12-23 Thread Tina Ricks
Hi everyone, and thanks for all the help. I'll see if I can answer some
questions:

The front end, the giant Frame book, is 600 pages of academic papers. It's
way more than a TOC. A handful of those papers (about 10) have associated
PowerPoint slides that are also included on the CD.

I don't think I have a complete path in my FM links, although I might. I can
take this structure (Giant PDF plus attachments folder) and move it to other
locations on my machine (USB drive, etc.) and the links work.

When I move the files, they are in the same relative location on Computer
#2.

If I click the attachments separately on Computer #2, they open. The .pps
file extension seems to work on Computer #2.

The whole construction (giant PDF and Attachments folder) works on Computer
#3. The links work from the PDF to the attachments.

Maybe this is some kind of odd technical issue with Computer #2. However.
since this is going on a CD that will be replicated for several thousand
conference attendees (many of which are strikingly non-technical) I need to
figure out why this works on some machines and not others.

Thanks so much.

Multiple Master Fonts stop working in recent Windows XP update

2010-12-23 Thread Brad Anderson
Framers,

Just ran across an issue with a client that is using multiple master fonts in
his document. They've worked wonderfully for 10+ years. However, the most
recent sent of updates for WIndows XP ends up killing the fonts. ATM and
FrameMaker cannot use the fonts and FrameMaker reports the fonts as missing.
Thankfully, he's working in a VM environment. If I rollback to the state prior
to the windows updates, everything works fine.

Is anyone else seeing this issue? Does anyone know which of the recent
updates causes this to happen? Worst case scenario is that we'll have to
quarantine the VM and work inside of that and do all online work elsewhere.

Thanks,

Brad

Re: Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified

2010-12-23 Thread Chris Despopoulos
This is so wierd, because this JUST happened to me last night. Indeed, it's a
Word document opened in Maker. For my situation, it happened to the PGF that
follows a text inset... once in a table cell, so it was the last pgf in the
flow, and another time in the middle of the document.

I found that if I inserted a bunch of pgfs in front of the dodgy one (hit
return
a few times), I could then modify the format for those pgfs. Then, if I
deledet
up from the bad one, it took the formatting of the previous pgfs. So that
fixed
the problem for me.

Very odd, and scary. The usual MIF washing didn't have any effect. I was
scared that maybe the file was corrupt, but I think I can trust it. Time will
tell...

This has happened to me a few times. I've deleted the paragraph in
MIF and it worked fine.
