Still need to get rid of the hyphen, but if that's manually added to

Indexing front matter

2011-01-13 Thread Lief Erickson
You could use a different marker for the content in your preface, include that
marker in your index, and use different page formatting for that marker. It
would be a new marker type that you would create. You might call it
IndexPreface or something like that.

I have done something similar with tables and figures. In my index tables and
figures are formatted differently so that they are more easily identifiable as
content in a table or a figure rather than in body text.

Martin: I use both too. Many of the features you list above (conditionality,
insets, variables, markers) are not implemented, or are implemented
differently, in InDesign, afaik.

You have a difficult problem; for me the above might well be the killer issue.
InD will do you lovely typography, but for my money it's still not quite a
player in the tech book world. Also afaik, it still doesn't even support
cross-references, or at least CS3 didn't. I use it, happily, for non-technical
books, but I'd not like to work with it for link-rich long-doc material.

As both products are from Adobe, as as there might be license fees for them
whichever way you go, why not try and rope in an Adobe product specialist to
advise you? In the UK Chris Kitchener used to be the main man, certainly for
InD, but I don't know whether he's still with Adobe. Or possibly one of their
added-value vendors, like Mekon (Sutton)?

HTH; just my view.

It's been a while since I used folio numbering. If I'm remembering correctly,
the process is something like this:

1) Create a new marker type named IndexFront.
2) Create a new paragraph format named IndexFrontIX that's a clone of IndexIX
and add it to your pgf catalog.
3) In your ref page IX flow, add an IndexFrontIX pgf that contains only
<$pagenum>.
4) In the book window, right-click your index file and select Set Up Standard
Index.
5) In the dialog box, add IndexFront to the Include list and click Set.

FrameMaker9 Character Set - GTE

2011-01-13 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Ed, I ran into something similar to this with my migration from FM 7 to
FM 9 in docs I've been working on this week. All of my bulleted lists
were messed up because of FM 9's "translation" of certain characters
into different characters and the ensuing "loss" of the appropriate font
to be applied to the symbols (Wingdings, in my case).

I consulted the following two resources:

http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2010/08/adobe-framemaker-9-but-i-dont-
want-a-plain-round-bullet.html
http://www.io.com/~tcm/etwr2472/guides/frame9/frame_tags.html

These should get you on the path.

Long story short: I defined a font-specific character format for each of
my bullet symbols and applied it to each of the five different bullet
styles that needed it. I did this in a clean doc created from a virgin,
minimalist template and further stripped everything out of the new doc
that I possibly could that wasn't related to the formats I desired. Then
I stored this in my templates folder and imported this stripped-down,
format-specific template into my book.

I have two variables, one that uses the LTE symbol and another that use
a hollow arrow symbol. I took a similar approach with that.

That's as much detail as I can give you on this hectic day, but it
worked well.

Good luck!
Jim

Subject: FrameMaker9 Character Set - GTE

Hi Framers,

I am haing a problem with the character set in FrameMaker 9 (TCS2).

The character set document lists the same keystrokes as in previous FM
sets for Greater Than or Equal To (GTE).
The GTE character is created in standard font, and is then changed to
"Symbol" font.

[Ctrl][q] [3] => GTE (this produces a small box) or
[Alt][0179]=>  GTE  (this works)

[Ctrl][q] [#]  =>  LTE  (this works)
or
[Alt][0163]=>  LTE  (this works)

Problem:
[Ctrl][q] [3] ==> S with caron, but not GTE in Symbol font
[Alt][0179]==> superscript 3, and also GTE in Symbol font

In my past experience, the S with a caron accent was changed to GTE in
Symbol font.
Now, however, this produces a small box in Symbol font when created by
using [Ctrl][q] [3].
While the ASCII character work-around is available, I am concerned with
opening FM7.2 documents in FM9. Will previously created GTE characters
be lost?
This is important because we are just beginning to use FM9, and all of
our previous FrameMaker documents were created with FM7.2.

I have opened a book of files (created with FM7) in FM9, updated the
entire book and saved all files. Then I checked the GTE characters, and
they looked fine. Trying to add additional GTE symbols resulted in the
same problem when using [Ctrl][q] [3].
This seems to indicated that the GTE symbols are "safe", but I am
suspicous of this new behavior and seek assurances.

My system:
Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2
Version 9.0p230

Windows XP Professional
Version 2002, Service Pack 2

Dell
Intel Core2 Duo CPU
E8500 @ 3.16GHz
3.25 GB RAM

Is anyone else experiencing this same behavior with FM9 ?

We are a small group of tech writers, and we are all experiencing the
same behavior of FM9.

Thanks for your help and opinions.

RE: FrameMaker9 Character Set - GTE

Good luck!
Jim

Hi Framers,

I am haing a problem with the character set in FrameMaker 9 (TCS2).

The character set document lists the same keystrokes as in previous FM
sets for Greater Than or Equal To (GTE).
The GTE character is created in standard font, and is then changed to
"Symbol" font.

[Ctrl][q] [3] => GTE (this produces a small box) or
[Alt][0179]=>  GTE  (this works)

[Ctrl][q] [#]  =>  LTE  (this works)
or
[Alt][0163]=>  LTE  (this works)

Problem:
[Ctrl][q] [3] ==> S with caron, but not GTE in Symbol font
[Alt][0179]==> superscript 3, and also GTE in Symbol font

In my past experience, the S with a caron accent was changed to GTE in
Symbol font.
Now, however, this produces a small box in Symbol font when created by
using [Ctrl][q] [3].

Does anyone know of an efficient way to convert paragraph-based xrefs to element-based xrefs?

2011-01-13 Thread Mike
We are in the process of putting all of our company documentation on our
corporate web site. The web site requires our documents now to be saved as
XML files. We used structured Frame for our manuals, but the manuals contain
a lot of cross references to a paragraph instead of a structured element. We
need to convert all of these Xrefs to point to an Xref element in the
structure. Unfortunately, some of the manuals contain several hundred and
even thousands of cross references that need converted.

Does anyone know of a better way than opening every cross reference and
manually changing the target from a paragraph to an element?

Thanks in advance.

I have a conundrum...

I have a huge body of work for one client done in FrameMaker. They want me

my FrameMaker files to InDesign, or migrate my colleagues to FrameMaker?

An unfair question - particularly as I'm not giving you much detail - but an
interesting one! I use both Frame and ID. Horses for courses, normally, but
this is an odd situation. The client is after a quick fix, naturally, but
neither option would appear to be very straightforward.

The FrameMaker route: I would have to migrate my colleagues to Windows too
(we're all Mac users; I'm now really happy running Frame under XP/Parallels

The InDesign route: I would have to spend a lot of time getting fairly
complicated Frame book files working in InDesign. Conditional builds, text
insets, variables, markers, tables, etc etc.

Which program makes the most sense for the content? And, if you
migrate, is that a good use of your time to do so given it's both a
quick fix AND you're already overloaded?

Consider a content strategy going forward. Yes, it's a client and not
your own managed content, but if a repeat client, having a strategy
for their content rather than just a plan will help keep future cases
like this at bay.

Desktop for Mac). Then they would have to learn Frame.

The InDesign route: I would have to spend a lot of time getting fairly
complicated Frame book files working in InDesign. Conditional builds, text
insets, variables, markers, tables, etc etc.

If you're billing by the hour and your client is loaded down with too
much cash, I'd move to InDesign. It'll take a lot longer both for the
conversion and on-going maintenance, assuming you started with Frame
for it's long document / documentation / book-handling tools.

Frame/InDesign

2011-01-13 Thread Martin Ley
Fellow Framers,

I have a conundrum...

I have a huge body of work for one client done in FrameMaker. They want me to
do more work than I can handle alone. I have two colleagues who work with
InDesign, who might be able to help out. Would it be easier to migrate all my
FrameMaker files to InDesign, or migrate my colleagues to FrameMaker?

An unfair question - particularly as I'm not giving you much detail - but an
interesting one! I use both Frame and ID. Horses for courses, normally, but
this is an odd situation. The client is after a quick fix, naturally, but
neither option would appear to be very straightforward.

The FrameMaker route: I would have to migrate my colleagues to Windows too
(we're all Mac users; I'm now really happy running Frame under XP/Parallels
Desktop for Mac). Then they would have to learn Frame.

The InDesign route: I would have to spend a lot of time getting fairly
complicated Frame book files working in InDesign. Conditional builds, text
insets, variables, markers, tables, etc etc.

RE: Flare vs Frame

2011-01-13 Thread Veronica Kutt
Here are answers to the software purchasing questions... Front Runner is
also an Adobe Software Reseller...

To answer Jim Pinkham's question...
If your company purchased a Maintenance package with FrameMaker you would
get updates/upgrades as they become available, provided the Maintenance is
current.

To answer Steve Johnson's question...
If a customer wants to do backward licensing, they order the current version
volume license of the product and the old ESD (Electronic Software Download
- one version back). Then they call Adobe Customer Care at 800-443-8158 to
request a serial number that matches the ESD. They will need to provide the
Adobe order number for the current version order. Also, if they purchased an
upgrade license (for example, CS3 to CS5), they will also need to provide
the serial number of the original product they are upgrading from. It takes
a few days to get the old serial number.

This is a much easier process for someone who already has some volume
licenses of the product they want to install and just needs to buy more of
them. They don’t need to buy the old ESD unless they don’t already have the
old media. And they don’t need to call for a serial number; they just use
the old serial number they already have to install on additional
workstations.

If anyone is looking to purchase software let us know at Front Runner. We
can provide you pricing for the software and when you purchase the software
from us you get discounts on the training!

Thanks

Sincerely,

You can still buy Frame 8 using a special kind of licensing I can't
think of now, maybe volume licensing.

Search the Adobe Forum; you'll find it.
