And further to this point: production artist has confirmed she was not
using the character tag -- David's correct, if the tag is used, all
works as it should.

Client has a product whose name
includes a superscript (pause for 2-minute hate session -- why do
clients think it's so clever to do that? Creates baskets of hassle!)
When we create cross-references to text which includes that product
name, it's not superscripted in the cross-ref text.

I don't suppose there's any way to get it to be superscripted in the
cross-ref text?

If (as I suspect) there is no way to do so, the only thing I can think
of doing is as a very last step before PDF, create a 'disposable' copy
of the book, run thru it for all cross-refs containing that product
name and convert them to text. Then generate PDF and manually add links
to those cross-refs in the PDF. Is there a better way?

OT: Acrobat 9.4.2 does save/export all graphic formats

2011-03-14 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear all,

Obviously i had my glass of wine to early! See
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/798630 for the whole
story of my re-re-re-istallation of Acrobat.
* The installation of 9.0 from the TCS2 DVD was OK
* After update to 9.2 my tests displayed correct results for all desired
tasks
* After the update to 9.4.2 i obviously did not test thoroughly enough
(hence the glass of whine).
System: Windows 7 x64

Later it turned out that 9.4.2 does not save/export graphic formats:
* jpg, jp2 does not save anything, and no error message gives a hint
* doc, rtf save issue error message "Save As failed to process this
document. No file has been
created"
* png and tif do not save anything, and no error message gives a hint
* pdf (all flavours), eps and ps are exported correctly
* html (all flavours) export a html file and the image as jpg correctly
* xml table and xml export correctly
* txt (both flavours) are exported correctly

Hence the only method i can get a picture is to export as HTML and through away
the HTML... or:
enlarge the picture as much as possible on the screen and take a screen shot.

What is missing in this installation?
During my re-re-re-installtions some Windows updates may have happened.

Any help available in this issue?

Thanks for this clarification, Les... I didn't know that. I'd seen the '.' and
'..' in MIFs, and assumed that that was all there was. Duh.

I like the idea of having the Insets pod open. Unless I'm missing
something, it looks like the only way to do that is to have it open
previously, correct? The View/Pods menu item is grayed out at the FM
splash screen.

If the pod is open when you close FrameMaker, it will be open when you
reload FrameMaker.

Hi Ant

Try Print to File instead of Save as PDF.

Cheers

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in Acrobat X

2011-03-14 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi All,

I'm trialling TCS3 and I've got a book/document in Frame with a group of 15
landscape pages in it - out of 214 in the whole book. When I Save (the book or
the file) as PDF from Frame using Distiller X all the pages are in portrait
format, chopping off the edges of the table that appears on the landscape pages.

I've tried resetting the Auto-Rotate pages setting in Distiller from
'Collectively' to 'Off' and 'Individually', however, neither alternative makes
any difference to the end result - all pages are portrait. Can anybody suggest
what settings I need to be changing, and where?

Many thanks,
Ant

Another thing that affects rendering speed is if you have the Insets pod

open in your workspace when you open the document. If open, FM (9 and
presumably 10) loads all the graphics when the file is opened-- so that
it can populate that pod. (I think I remember the explanation Adobe gave

me.) But then you can scroll quickly through the document without pauses

to load each graphic. If the Insets pod is closed when the document is
opened, FM loads each graphic only when you scroll through the document
and encounter them. So one setting gives fast scrolling. The other gives

fast opening of files.

Anyway, it does sound like FM is misbehaving for you, but perhaps
changing the Insets pod situation will be a workaround for you.
