Batch Convert EPS to TIF

2011-08-12 Thread Wei Jiang (PT_CN)
If you have Acrobat, then you can use the Batch Process function, which is
available under Advanced > Document Processing (I'm using Acrobat 9). Just a
few settings, works great!

RE: Acrobat fails to highlight found search terms

2011-08-12 Thread Fred Ridder

I took a few minutes yesterday to report this to Adobe as a bug, and actually
received a same-day reply from someone named Ed Hutton. What he said was this:

Thank you for taking the time to notify us of this unexpected behavior after
updating to Acrobat 9.4.5. This has been identified as a bug by our Engineering
team. They are hard at work creating a fix to be included in the next update.
There is no time frame for this patch to be released.
A workaround has been reported by some users. Here are the steps:
1) Do a CRTL + F to bring up the Find window.
2) Click on the dropdown and choose Open Full Acrobat Search.
3) Click on the Search button in the Search panel on the left.
4) For the first search result on each page, you will have to click the
search result twice to see the highlighted word. You can then click each
additional search result once to see the following highlighted word on the same
page. The same procedure applies in reverse as you work up (instead of down)
the list of search results.
5) It will bring up a list of all the instances of the word on that page.

Other users have installed Reader and used the search capability of the Reader
X (10) which seems to be unhindered.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have this issue resolved in the
future.

It's basically the same workaround many of us had already figured out, but at
least they have somebody reading and responding to problem reports.

Yes, this bug was noted previously on the list. It only started after Adobe's
most recent patch of Acrobat 9.0 (which was supposedly a security patch rather
than anything affecting basic functionality), and only seems to be a problem
under Windows XP. Reportedly, Find works fine under Windows 7 (nobody has said
anything one way or the other about Vista).

Search still works properly (for me, at least...), but Find has been rendered
essentially useless. All we can do is wait to find out if Adobe considers this
enough of a bug that they fix it in their next patch. Or else bite the bullet
and buy into the new set of bugs that reportedly come with Acrobat X.

Re: Export FM Settings

Hi Alison

For what it's worth, workspace definitions are stored in your user folder
(typically
C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\9\WorkSpaces\Structured (or

same position on your new machine.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Export FM Settings

FM 9 Version: 9.0p255

Unstructured

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit

FM Experience: 2+years

I received a new computer this year which has been a real pain and is about to
go back to the "shop" to try and find out why I get multiple "black screens
of death" every time I boot. I am getting another new computer as a
replacement which will be mine to keep (my "old-new" computer will be given to
another employee once the kinks are worked out).

However, this means I have to reconfigure a new system with all the pain that
entails.

In the interest of speeding up the process, I am wondering whether there is
some way – in addition to copying over the maker.ini file – that I can export
FM settings from one computer in order to import them into FM9 on the one.

I'm specifically thinking of my personalized Workspace, but if there are any
other things that can be exported/imported, I would love a list as well as
where to find them or how to export them.

Also, if anyone has any tips for doing the same thing with other Adobe
programs (Acrobat 9, Illustrator 15.0.2) I'd love that information as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Which FMaker version?

2011-08-12 Thread visualbistro

My manager has finally gotten frustrated enough with Word to check into buying
FrameMaker. She asked me what version would be best for us, and I'm not sure
what to tell her. I have used FM 5 and FM 7 a lot, FM 8 a bit, and have no
experience with FM 10. At this point we are building basic documents, but we
would like to have better control over the formatting, and be able to use
conditional text. I don't foresee us using the structured version, or any of
the "fancy" additions to the later versions. But I don't want to saddle us with
a dinosaur, either.

What are the general thoughts from this "community?" What are the PROs and
CONs? What should I recommend? We are a small startup business (check out
www.agilyx.com ), and have to keep an eye on the budget, but we want to create
professional results in everything we do.

We are using Windows 7 and Office 2010, on a variety of Dell laptops.

Thoughts? Please reply to me directly, as I am only receiving the digest right
now.

Thanks!

Shortcuts not working

2011-08-12 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

Over the past months I have posted a few messages to the list, asking whether
folks have noticed some user interface issues that I have experienced - such as
shortcuts ceasing to work, pods that can't be moved, and so on. The response
has been...ahem...minimal. So either (i) I'm hallucinating, or (ii) nobody
wants to talk to me, or (iii) something about my system/workflow is unusual. So
I have just tried a few things.

First, the deets:

TCS 2 on Windows Vista Business SP2, 4GB RAM
FrameMaker 9.0p255, using structured authoring; default workspace with
Structure View and Element Catalog open but in separate tab groups.
DITA-FMx plugin installed (though I know that's not the cause, as the problems
started before I installed it)
Photoshop CS4 (11.0.2)
RoboHelp 8.0.208 (hmm...I wonder if that's a build number, and what that
indicates?)

Immovable Pods

* Open FM and an XML document. Document, Structure View, and Element Catalog
are visible.
* Structure View can be dragged around.
* Element Catalog won't move.
* Try dragging the Structure View again; this time it won't move. I now have
two immovable objects.
* Click Element menu, Element Catalog (although the catalog is already
visible). Now it will move.
* Click Structure Tools, Structure View (although it is already visible). Now
the Structure View can be moved.
* Try moving the Element Catalog again. It won't move. Click the menu option
again, and it becomes movable. Go figure.
I've noticed the same with other pods such as the Para Designer and several
others, though I've not tried the menu connection.
Anyway, enough of that. Let's move on.

Keyboard Shortcuts
When I first open FM, keyboard shortcuts such as Esc mp, Esc fif, Esc sa, and
so on work fine. Then at some stage they stop working. I've noticed a pattern
related to whether I have Photoshop open or not. So I did some tests with a
limited set of keyboard shortcuts. Here are my results:

1. With FM open alone (no Photoshop), the following shortcuts work:
Esc mp (shrinkwrap a graphic)
Esc fif (import file into an anchored frame)
Esc fie (import element definitions)
Esc sa (open the Anchored Frame pod)
Ctrl-1 (insert an element)

2. Open Photoshop after FrameMaker:
Only Ctrl-1 (insert an element) works. The others don't work.
And in case you're wondering, if you close PS again the shortcuts don't come
back to life.

3. Open Photoshop before FrameMaker, then open FM and the same XML file:
Only Ctrl-1 (insert an element) works. The others don't work.
As an added bonus, pressing Esc fie (import element definitions) inserts the
text "fie" in the document, though the other Esc shortcuts don't insert the
equivalent text (I was strangely disappointed...).

4. Open RoboHelp after FM:
All shortcuts work as expected.

I haven't the commitment to try the same tests with Acrobat, Captivate, and the
other things in TCS2.

Now...can anyone else confirm similar results, or am I really hallucinating?

Conclusion
Another nail in Adobe's coffin, as far as I'm concerned. oXygen, here I come.

Regards,
Roger

ImageMagick can take advantage of an installed GhostScript. In an automated
publishing environment I use GhostScript and ImageMagick to convert EPS or PDF
into PNG, TIF would be just another option? As far as I remember it is
sufficient to have them both installed and then just use the convert.exe from
ImageMagick.

There's a competent graphics utility on the Mac, GraphicConverter, which can
manually or batch convert between almost any graphics format, and process at
the same time, but I don't expect you're on a Mac.

Importing Variables into files in Groups or Folders

Subject: Importing Variables into files in Groups or Folders

I've got a FM10 book... up until very recently, we avoided using Groups or
Folders in the book file because we needed to use the Archive plugin, which
wasn't compatible. Rick Quatro's new script takes care of that problem, so I
grouped files for my 500+ file programming guide to make life easier.

I've just discovered that I can't import a user variable setting into any files
that are in a group or folder in the book. I've tried importing from a
top-level file, a file within a folder or group, and even setting a folder to
subscribe to a template file with the correct settings. Variables *will* import
into top-level files in the book without problem. Only files in groups/folders
are affected.

Coworker managed to discover that if the files in the folder/group are *open*
she could import variables, but not if closed. My system would not import
whether they were open or closed.

My system:
FM10 - 10.0.1.402
Win XP
Dell T5400 w/Intel Xeon E5405 @ 2GHz
3GB RAM

Coworker (working remotely)
New Dell engineering laptop (don't have exact specs, but it's at least as good
as my desktop)
Windows 7
FM10 - 10.0.1.402

Am I crazy? I can't believe I'm the first to find this problem, but I don't see
any mention of it in the archives.

RE: Importing Variables into files in Groups or Folders

2011-08-12 Thread Martinek, Carla
Could someone else give this issue a try on their machine before I put a bug
report in?

Just looking for a third-party validation.

Thanks,

If you have the Creative Suite, use Bridge: Tools> Photoshop> Image
Processor. It can also run a Photoshop action on the images.

What’s wrong with the native Ghostscript batch utilities. GS have output
devices for what you want, and likely also a .cmd or .bat file as well.

Export FM Settings

2011-08-12 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Alison

For what it's worth, workspace definitions are stored in your user folder
(typically
C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\9\WorkSpaces\Structured (or
UnStructured). I'd guess you could copy those files and replace them in the
same position on your new machine.

Hope this helps.

However, this means I have to reconfigure a new system with all the pain that
entails.

In the interest of speeding up the process, I am wondering whether there is
some way ? in addition to copying over the maker.ini file ? that I can export

There's a competent graphics utility on the Mac, GraphicConverter, which can
manually or batch convert between almost any graphics format, and process at
the same time, but I don't expect you're on a Mac.

ImageMagick can take advantage of an installed GhostScript. In an automated
publishing environment I use GhostScript and ImageMagick to convert EPS or PDF
into PNG, TIF would be just another option… As far as I remember it is
sufficient to have them both installed and then just use the convert.exe from
ImageMagick.

Which FMaker version?

2011-08-12 Thread visualbis...@comcast.net

Thoughts? Please reply to me directly, as I am only receiving the digest right
now.

Thanks!
