Restore a corrupt file
Hi all - I really appreciate all the suggestions. A couple people have asked to see the file but it's confidential material from a client so I can't send it out. Nothing worked as far as opening it (except opening it in a text editor) so I recreated it from the previous version. Thanks again! Pat Christenson

Hi, Looks like you've tried everything, but just in case, look in the folder that contains the file for a .auto extension, or for a file with an odd extension of a collection of letters and numbers. If you find either, copy it and then either try to open it with FM or change the extension to .fm and then open. I'm interested in technical FM challenges - are you comfortable with sending me the file? If so, please send me a copy of a backup that hasn't been opened with the 'heroic' method. Section Number Grayed Out in Book
In response to a query as to why the Section Number is grayed out in book numbering I offer the following. Frame added a System based Section Number and Sub-Section Number with Version 9. This is also when they enabled hierarchical books, with folders and groups. Unfortunately they tied the two functionalities together. The Section Number is enabled only at the 2nd level of hierarchy, and Sub-Section only at at the 3rd. Try it. Build a book, create a folder and drop a file into the folder. You will then be able to set Section Number, but will find the Chapter Number grayed out. The same is true for the Sub Section number. Make a 32d tier and you enable Subs, but gray out Section and Chapter. This is logical enough, but as we build our books customized through code, this destroyed the potential to use Section Number for us. We have been using Volume as a workaround for many years, and must now still do so. adobe, are you listening? Give us the option.
