I would have a few feature requests, but first some info on how we use
 Frame:

We've got Frame set up with unstructured templates (even though we all
have had DITA experience) and we use RoboHelp to convert 8 books into
 one single online help system.

Some of the larger issues I run into all the time:

Big irritation that I have, is that the variables are and have been a
struggle to work with.  Individual writers (over time with writers
coming and going) set up variables for their book, because, hey, it
sounds like a logical and good idea. But when we bring multiple books
together, I have no good way to manage the variables.  My advice to
several writers has been to not use variables at all in favor of using
the global search and replace functionality.  So I'd say either remove
variables from Frame or put some effort into making them worth using.
Interleaf used to do such a stand up job with variables.

Other features that would be excellent to me would be things that
focus on being able to globally manage paragraphs, characters, master
pages, variables, table types, conditional values, graphics settings,
anchored frame settings, and markers.  Seems like every release I end
up having to troll through 10-20 different books making macro-level
changes through each of the supporting files.

Let's see and another pain in the backside has been finding and
removing paragraph or character styles that are applied but no longer
used.  We did extensive template clean-up 3 releases ago, but are
still finding interesting settings that deviate from the current
template.  Even after we believe we have applied the paragraph style, the old
 thing still hangs on.
I've had to apply paragraph styles, then apply default character
style, then re-apply paragraph style before things stick.

Integration with RoboHelp is a whole other set of grumblings.

Thanks and I hope this might help in some small way.

Sorry, Rob, but you're a little off base on this one. What FrameMaker tells you
is not that the font has changed, but instead is that the font *information*
has changed. It only tells you this when the font metadata--specifically the
font metrics information that comes from the Windows printer driver--has
changed when you change to a different printer, and therefore a different
driver with its own font metrics data. Admittedly, the differences in metrics
data (high-precision dimensions for each glyph and for inter-glyph spacing) are
small and subtle, but they can add up to enought that some text lines that are
very close to the maximum line length may need to break differently. And a line
break changing can potentially cause the length of the paragraph to change. And
a change in the length of a paragraph can potentially cause a difference in how
that page (and all subsequent pages in the chapter) breaks. Anyone who has
opened a precisely laid out Word document to another computer only to find
mangled tables, page breaks in the wrong places, and a different page count for
the document will understand that a change in font metrics *can* affect the
document, and will appreciate that FrameMaker at least warns you about the
possibility.

Adobe did make one major improvement in regard to the changed font metrics
issue a few releases back, when they allowed FrameMaker to set its own default
printer independent of the Windows default printer. If you always use this
default printer (e.g., Adobe PDF) and never change to a different printer
driver (e.g., making a PDF that you then print from Acrobat when you need a
hard copy rather than sending the document directly to the printer from
FrameMaker), you will never again be b othered by the font information has

Running page header/footer spacin question

2012-05-08 Thread Ken Poshedly
Gang and Other Frame-anistas!

We here are considering modifying the page headers in our tech manuals to state
the current topic level 1 headings as they progress through a chapter.
Currently, the page headers are set up as follows:
* The product name (as a variable) is placed towards the gutter.
* The manual chapter title is keyed in and manually spaced (via the
spacebar)
at the page outer edge.
Simple, elegant, but not what I think is most helpful to the customer.

With the chapter title already stated in the thumb-tab located vertically along
the page edge, I wish to change things a bit and set up a running page header
that does the following:

* Correctly displays the product name (at the gutter)
* Correctly displays the next available topic level 1 (at the page
outer edge).
* Correctly spaces those two elements no matter what the length of the
topic
level 1 text (the product name text will remain consistent throughout the book).
Is this possible?

I tried setting up a separate running header as a separate variable definition
that includes the chapter title paragraph tag followed by a comma followed by
the paragraph tag for the topic level 1 heading (all inside their respective
brackets, etc), as shown below:

$paratext[Chapter Title, Topic level 1]

Using a manual for an SCC8300 Crawler Crane and a sample chapter titled
Assembly, this correctly results in the following:

* First page (a right-hand page which includes the chapter TOC) with a
page
header that includes SCC8300 Crawler Crane aligned at the page gutter and
Assembly (as per the chapter title paragraph tag) aligned at the page outer
right edge.
* Second page (a left-hand page which begins with the text, images,
etc) with a
page header that includes SCC8300 Crawler Crane aligned at the page gutter
and
General Maintenance (as per the first topic level 1 paragraph tag) aligned at
the page outer left edge. But the next topic level 1 heading is Lubricants,
Coolants and Filters, which displays only with the word Lubricants
displaying
at the page outer edge (and the remaining words obviously not visible).

I know the simple answer is to kill the product name from the header, but for
the time being, we are tied to including the product name in the page header
along with whatever else will be there.

Any ideas?

Some suggestions for improvement of FrameMaker

Sorry, Rob, but you're a little off base on this one. What FrameMaker tells you
is not that "the font has changed", but instead is that "the font *information*
has changed". It only tells you this when the font metadata--specifically the

<$paratext[Chapter Title, Topic level 1]>

Using a manual for an SCC8300 Crawler Crane and a sample chapter titled
"Assembly", this correctly results in the following:

* First page (a right-hand page which includes the chapter TOC) with a
page
header that includes "SCC8300 Crawler Crane" aligned at the page gutter and
"Assembly" (as per the chapter title paragraph tag) aligned at the page outer
right edge.
* Second page (a left-hand page which begins with the text, images,
etc) with a
page header that includes "SCC8300 Crawler Crane" aligned at the page gutter
and
"General Maintenance" (as per the first topic level 1 paragraph tag) aligned at
the page outer left edge. But the next topic level 1 heading is "Lubricants,
Coolants and Filters", which displays only with the word "Lubricants"
displaying
at the page outer edge (and the remaining words obviously not visible).

I know the simple answer is to kill the product name from the header, but for
the time being, we are tied to including the product name in the page header
along with whatever else will be there.

Any ideas?

Is it possible to embed a webpage in FM?

2012-05-08 Thread John Turnbull
Some applications -- XMetaL is an example -- allow a developer to place
a browser in a side-panel, and to interact with the API through scripts
that are placed within the webpage.

Is this possible in FM?

Is it possible to embed a webpage in FM?

2012-05-08 Thread Scott Prentice
Never seen it but theoretically possible. Would be a bit of work though. I've
considered trying to integrate AIR with the FDK which might be one way to do
this. Other options are possible.
