RE: Text reflows when converting to PDF

2012-07-02 Thread Karen Robbins

Hi Ed,

This may have been it! I had unchecked that system/document font box,
but never expected that I would have to keep doing it. We'll have to
see if it lasts the day or requires constant re-unchecking. The
latest PDF looks exactly like the earlier print version and current
screen view.

I have also changed my Windows default printer to Adobe PDF; it
remains to be seen what happens when I need to use a physical printer.

Users shouldn't have to keep resetting this stuff. Ideally the choice
should stick with the document, or at least the application should
remember everything you set until you change it.

Thanks for the tip!

Best,
Karen

This is all speculation that your print sequence may include a
change of fonts that may affect your text flow and word wrapping.
That may not be your problem, but it is worth checking.

There are two places (at least!) where that option can be set:

-- The Adobe PDF Document Properties dialog (where you guys changed it via File
Print Setup in FM). I believe that setting persists only during the current
FM session.

-- The Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog. This is the place where you make
that setting the default so that it persists (so long as the setting in
Document Properties doesn't override it).

To change the latter:

1) Go to Start Devices and Printers (Win 7) or Start Printers and Faxes
(Win XP).
2) Right-click Adobe PDF and select Printing Preferences.
3) On the Adobe PDF Settings tab of the Printing Preferences dialog, turn off
Rely on system fonts only and click OK.

Note: There have been a couple of times in the last six or so months when this
option was mysteriously turned back on in the Printing Preferences dialog. I
suspect the cause was an Acrobat update.

I have also changed my Windows default printer to Adobe PDF; it
remains to be seen what happens when I need to use a physical printer.

Well, you'll have to select a different printer (which means, in most apps, you
have to go to File Print instead of clicking a toolbar button).

A better alternative, IMHO, is to install Sundorne's free SetPrint plugin
(http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm). It automatically
makes Adobe PDF your printer in FM without requiring you to change your system
default printer. Highly recommended -- and the price is right. :-)

Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats

2012-07-02 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello All,

FM10 - We are converting an unstructured Frame file to Structured. Due to
unfortunate circumstances, we are not able to use a conversion table (sigh).

The issue is that during the hand tagging of this file, we have to wrap the
text in the element tags in para tags to match the schema. When we wrap the
text, we lose the paragraph's formatting properties. Everything turns to "body"
and we have to reapply the format.

We are able to manipulate the EDD somewhat but can't stray from the structure.
We've looked at Read\Write rules but they don't appear to help in this case.
We've also looked at using the "TextFormatRules, ElementPgfFormatTag" options
but we have more than one paragraph style that goes to an individual element.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

BTW, everything works great when a new document is created using the template,
EDD, etc.

Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Lisa Freeman

Text reflows when converting to PDF

2012-07-02 Thread Craig Ede
When you change to the non-PDF printer you will get a message saying that
the text may reflow. But the thing to do when you want to print to the
printer is just print to PDF and then send your PDF to the printer from
Acrobat. That way you won't get any surprises.

Craig

Using Extendscript to Set PDF Options in a FrameMaker Book

2012-07-02 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi all,

With some extremely helpful pointers from Rick Quatro, I believe I have
more or less figured out how this has to be done. The script would need to
do this:

1. in the FM book, save each file to MIF.
2. add/modify MIF statements in the file.
3. save the file back to the FrameMaker format.

For example, I have it figured out for the default PDF zoom level at least.
I had to review the mif reference guide (could only find it for FM 8, any
later guide out there?) and map that to the mif statements for FM 10
documents. They are similar to FM 8, but also slightly different. There's
the following MIF document statements:

In each document in the book, I need to set the above MIF statements. Then,
the FM book will print the document to PDF, where the default zoom level is
125%.

A big thanks to Rick on this one.

Joe
