On educational discounts documentation issues
Hi Framers: Down here in South Africa I have been trying to get educational discounts for Frame products, like TC4, but so far no luck, but then the fat lady has not sung her FM11 aria yet. There is a long-term, industry-wide aversion to full print documentation. This is a great pity. I am sure this knowledge gap restricts market share of those companies who churn out expensive but undocumented versions of fantastic programs. If the corporation dedicated a professional writer to do a full manual of its product, the product might take off, but no accountant would allow that as there would not be an immediate return on the balance sheet. Much easier to upgrade a pdf manual. By the way, anyone looked at the adobe pdf manuals? They are good, but when you turn to the index (yes, just one) they are incredibly feeble. Ununderstandable from one of the industry`s best indexing programs. Would not know where to start? Well I think this listserv's archive would be a pretty good place to start. Even a list of common problems and their solutions might make for a significant missing manual. I also do not understand why nobody from Adobe watches this space and comments. Disconcerting to say the least. Cobbler, keep to your last. Template Override Madness
Hi, all. I have been struggling with the Remove Overrides issue with the cover page template for our user guides. It has a busy first page with a lot of text flows, graphics, variables, etc. I could not identify the variation between the body page and the master page, so I decided to create a brand new file based on the template file. If the new one was clean, I would ditch the original and rename this one as the template file. I created a new file and it looked great -- but it stiill has overrides! The new file should use the master page as the basis for the body cover page, correct? And since I haven't touched the brand new body cover page, I can't have created any overrides. Yes NO! I still get the message. Other than flipping back and forth between the Body page and the Master page in the original template file and hoping to spot the difference, I have no idea how to fix this. All suggestions gratefully received. --Nancy ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. Further update: I downloaded, installed, and ran HuntOverrides and fixed all paragraph overrides. A very nice tool! (http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/). However, it did not solve the problem. I suppose there must be other overrides, such as tweaked text frames, still in play. I don't know how to identify them, nor does creating a new document based on the template eliminate them. --Nancy ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Template Override Madness
When FrameMaker complains about overrides in relation to master pages, it is not talking about character format or paragraph format overides. Instead, it is talking about page layout overrides, such as the number, dimensions, and/or position of text frames, room for sideheads, etc. -Fred Ridder Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2012 15:24:32 -0500 From: ma...@verizon.net To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Re: Template Override Madness Further update: I downloaded, installed, and ran HuntOverrides and fixed all paragraph overrides. Deleting conditions across a book - Frame 10
Hi all Does anyone know of a way to delete conditional tags across a book using Frame 10? I used the PGF Whopper plugin for Frame 8 but can't find anything for version 10. I know you can go into each file and delete each tag individually but it's very time consuming. templates showing usage WAS: Hello (FM 11 Documentation)
I think David is really right on the money with these comments on the templates. Let's hope the Adobe is listening on this one. They could get started now, releasing them periodically. Then by FM 12 they would have a real bang-up set of them to come out with the new release. In fact, they could set up a place where such things could be contributed for review and modification by their engineers (if they saw fit). Craig Ede -Original Message- What I think gives more bang for the buck--again, assuming we can't have it all--is doing more and better work on the provided templates. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Template Override Madness
You're sure the overrides aren't on the master or reference pages? When I was cleaning up some legacy docs in FM10 recently, I found that any time a character tag was applied to a whole paragraph it would show up as an override. The only way I know to stop that is a kludge: add a space at the end of the paragraph and close the character tag before it. Alternatively, create additional paragraph tags.
