educational pricing

2012-08-02 Thread Alan T Litchfield
I assume NA means USA?

I was already aware that other places are selectively omitted from
buying at such rates.

Still waiting for my notice for the FM11 upgrade too, by the way.

Frame-10 (AdoTecCom-3.5) Structured Applicaton help

2012-08-02 Thread Richard Doll
Structured Framers,

I'm an "old" 76er who has been creating 4.5-5K pp/year with versions 4 thru
7.2 for umpteen years and now have a BIG prob.
Previous to the current dilemma, about a month ago I did order the
AdobeTechCommSuite 3.5 and have it installed on a Win-64bit Sys.
7.2 does not want to fly any more (I think some required frame-sys file has
been deleted).

These catalog pages begin with provided ".sgm" text files (1 file per
section / ea. sec.varying 48 to 260 pages).
The pages have 95% of which have "framed images", and table
columns which vary 3 to 16 columns.
Their is a lot of "hand makeup decisions" to determine the need of being a
1-col. page or a 2-col. page and the need for hand-placement of "continued
from/to" lines, pdf-ads and filler pages and when completed . . . several
indexes (a 2-col. and a 5-col being 12 or 64pp) needing to be sorted and
concatenated.

--

The IMMEDIATE issue is . . . getting Frame-10 to convert (via the Apps) the
data from SGML-//HaL and O'Reilly to Frame.

Seeking "paid" help . . . to fix/heal the required "applications" - (4 of
them) to function in Frame-10.

If interested . . . please, please, plea, pl, respond.

Adobe's response - thus far - has been to email a pdf of the current
Structure-manual . . . which I have yet to receive.

First, Adobe would have to develop a template feature. You can kludge
something like templates but it's clunky and undocumented, especially
with regard to TOCs and other generated files.

Bruce Foster's FrameMaker Archive Program

2012-08-02 Thread Abungu, Salome (TTI Mpls)
Is there a new version of the FrameMaker archive program available? I remember
that someone was working on it at one point. I just didn't know if it is
available. We are about to upgrade to FrameMaker 11. Any information you can
provide is helpful.

Thank you!

Upgrade to TCS 4 for subscription holders

2012-08-02 Thread Coe, David E
My group purchased TCS3.5 and a support plan with 2-year free upgrades on April
27, 2012, since this is a new product for us we wanted to purchase the latest
version. After seeing this post, I inquired from Adobe why we did not get an
upgrade notification. Their first answer was that TCS 4 was released on April
26, 2012 and the upgrade notification went out this same day, the day before we
purchased TCS 3.5. Their answer as to why we purchased TCS 3.5, that was
version we requested (not once did they try to upsell to the newer version). We
did not know that it was even available to purchase until I saw this post,
Adobe did not bother to let us know then nor did they mention it in the 6-weeks
of multiple support calls after we purchased TCS 3.5. During that timeframe,
their website did not even mention TCS 4 it still had TCS 3.5 displayed. After
some tailchasing, they had to push our request up the line and we finally got
the upgrade license today.

It's sad that we, the users, have to find out through user support forums to
get service and upgrade notices that we paid top-dollar for Adobe to provide to
us.

Framers,

I purchased the full TCS subscription last year and thought I'd get immediate
notification of upgrades. I've not seen anything and checked my LWS (licensing)
account yesterday. Nothing there either.

I've emailed to two Adobe addresses over the last couple of days, but no
response.

Anyone else a subscriber and know how this works? Anyone received notification
on a subscription?

Thanks!

An apology to Adobe staff who have helped others and to Dov Isaacs who, have contributed mightily to this list.

2012-08-02 Thread Rob Shell
Hi Framers.
An apology to Adobe staff who have helped others, [but not me!} and
especially to Dov Isaacs and others who have contributed mightily to this
list.

What I would like to reiterate and why I keep complaining is that pricey
revisions which do not really improve stability are extremely hard to
swallow. I am not simply criticizing for the sake of mouthing off. I earn my
living with FM9 and I am not going anywhere else.

I believe that that much FrameMaker information is locked away from users.
For example, how would the FM user interpret the following set of error
messages which I received today?
Framemaker error
 9004
8847891
5207138
5269791

Would the Adobe Forums help? No post on the forum for these.
Would Google help? No hits
Would the manuals help? Hell, no

I have spent a lifetime working on computers in every conceivable situation
from mainframes to laptops and I know what a good manual is. Alas,
FrameMaker does not have one.
An example of a bad manual might be the IBM JCL manual [Job control
language] while a good manual might be the SPSS manual. {Statistical
Package] Perhaps the best software manual ever written.

As Software manufacturers retreated from print manuals, a market gap opened
for the "missing" manuals. These increased the cost of the product and
simply are not good enough except to start.

Since we pay top dollar for Adobe products, perhaps we can be assured of a
review of their manual policy.

Hi all

Does anyone know of a way to delete conditional tags across a book using Frame
10?
I used the PGF Whopper plugin for Frame 8 but can't find anything for version
10.
I know you can go into each file and delete each tag individually but it's very
time consuming.

Thanks in advance

Hi Laura,

We're using Rick Quatro's FindChangeSpecial plugin for this.

On book level, you search for one condition at a time and replace it
with another condition (the same one in all cases) and in the operation
delete the found condition. In a couple of minutes, you now have only
one condition in your book. Then you go through the files one by one and
delete the remaining condition, which takes another few minutes.

Not an instant fix, but much faster than deleting every tag by itself in
every file.

On educational discounts & documentation issues

2012-08-02 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Rob

I've grumbled on here about an FM10 crash a couple of times in the last year.
An Adobe engineer got in touch each time. I was impressed! And the crash has
been fixed in FM11 - I'm definitely impressed.

I agree with you about printed manuals, though. We'll be buying a few copies of
the Scriptorium book as soon as it comes out.

Cheers
Rebecca

>>> "Rob Shell"  1/08/12 22:59 >>>
Hi Framers:
Down here in South Africa I have been trying to get educational discounts
for Frame products, like TC4, but so far no luck, but then the fat lady has
not sung her FM11 aria yet.
There is a long-term, industry-wide aversion to full print documentation.
This is a great pity. I am sure this knowledge gap restricts market share of
those companies who churn out expensive but undocumented versions of
fantastic programs.
If the corporation dedicated a professional writer to do a full manual of
its product, the product might take off, but no accountant would allow that
as there would not be an immediate return on the balance sheet. Much easier
to upgrade a pdf manual.

By the way, anyone looked at the adobe pdf manuals? They are good, but when
you turn to the index (yes, just one) they are incredibly feeble.
Ununderstandable from one of the industry`s best indexing programs.

Would not know where to start? Well I think this listserv's archive would be
a pretty good place to start. Even a list of common problems and their
solutions might make for a significant "missing" manual.

I also do not understand why nobody from Adobe watches this space and
comments. Disconcerting to say the least. Cobbler, keep to your last.

Template Override Madness

2012-08-02 Thread Craig Ede

You can try this.

Save a copy of your file. Delete everything on the body page (Cntrl-A, then
Delete) and then flip back to the master page. Then flip back to the body page
and accept everything that is on the master page that is set to come through to
the body page. Don't add anything else. Then put your live text back into the
empty text boxes that have been brought to the body page from the master page
from the copy you saved earlier.

A lot of times the stuff that causes these messages are empty text lines where
a person has the graphics text tool selected and then clicks onto the page but
doesn't enter anything. This leaves an empty text line.

Also, it sounds like your template has overrides, so that should be fixed in
this way, too.
