That's correct, Wei, in Calibri and in Myriad Pro (the version sold by
Adobe at least), the checkmark glyph at U+2713 does not exist.

Converting Framemaker to Sharepoint

2012-09-19 Thread Eargle, Lore
Is it possible, Cynthia, that your company is asking you to put everything on a
wiki within SharePoint. That's the only way you could put the information there
without uploading documents into SharePoint.

Converting Framemaker to Sharepoint

2012-09-19 Thread Jang F.M. Graat
Hello Cindy,

Maybe I am blonde but I don't get it. Your company wants authors to write
content in SharePoint ???

I hadn't heard of this great new editor called SharePoint. Actually, the
Microsoft SharePoint does not mention an integrated editor. They just assume
everyone on this planet uses Microshot Office.

I do know that you can connect to Sharepoint from FrameMaker and use Sharepoint
as a CMS - which is what I had understood it really is. Not a good CMS, and
certainly not the CCMS that modern documentation developers need, but yes, it
can store stuff for you. "Converting to Sharepoint" sounds like some people
have no idea what the heck they are talking about. Unfortunately, such people
are often in control of business and get to call the shots.

If they want you to convert to Word from FrameMaker, it is really time to go
look for another job...

Good luck. You'll need it

Document revision control

2012-09-19 Thread Amy Super
Hi there,

Does anyone out there use a revision control system? We are in dire need
of it, as my company has recently gone up to 3 writers (from 1) and
we're afraid of overwriting work.

Our document repository is made up of standalone FM docs with linked
images, FM books with linked images, and a pile of giant old Word docs
that have both embedded and referenced images.

These are the solutions I know a little about:

* Perforce - used at my last job, since that's what the
developers used. I think it has a bit of a steep learning curve for this
environment, though, given that I had to save my files out as .mif
before checking them in. I'm hoping for support of binary files instead.

* SharePoint/TFS - we have it here. But our version of
SharePoint is too old for FrameMaker to integrate. That means I can't
access any linked files without checking them all out. Upgrading
SharePoint is not happening any time soon. I have also read a fair
number of unhappy stories on the Adobe forums about the FM/SP
combination.

* Subversion - a friend recently installed this at his company,
and so far it looks promising. Does anyone use it?

* Documentum - just had a terrible experience trying to get them
to respond to a live chat. I know it's an option for integrating FM.

Thoughts are greatly appreciated, as I found out today I need to have a
candidate list ready by Friday.

Thanks!

Amy

Printed colors out of whack

2012-09-19 Thread Tim Pann
Frame 9, Win7

This may have a very simple solution but in fact I have never needed to deal
with document colors in print, so I'm pretty clueless.

I have a document that has imported (by reference) GRAYSCALE TIFF images. It
also has the word DRAFT in large gray (typed) letters on each page.

All of these gray images and text are printing with a sepia tone. It's not
dramatic but it's also not really subtle.

For the DRAFT text paragraph tag I'm using a custom color that I defined
myself. I never change anything on the Print As: and Model: drop-downs in the
Color Definitions, so they are always Print As: Spot and Model: CMYK.
(Honestly, I have no idea what Spot colors and Prcess colors are.)

Any advice appreciated, thank you!

Tim

Yes this is a typical MS super-intelligent program pretending to know what I want...
Hence I use BabelMap
where I can switch between Combined Font and Single Font.

The required symbol (U+2611 BALLOT BOX WITH CHECK) can be found - for example - in Segoe UI Symbol.
