FrameMaker (dita) and SVN

2012-12-05 Thread ETudsbery
Hi all,

I currently use FrameMaker to author DITA files. I currently work alone
but will soon be joined by three other writers. For this reason I was
planning on using SVN for source control (SVN is already used in the
company for the application code).

I was wondering how practical it is to use this pairing. Is there any
integration between the new versions of FrameMaker and SVN? Or do I have
to check out the files in a separate SVN client before opening the files
in FrameMaker?

Thanks in advance for any information.
regards,

Edwin Tudsbery

RE: Licensing Another Copy of FrameMaker??

2012-12-05 Thread Priyank Shrivastava.
Hi Allison,

If you need to purchase Framemaker 9 and Adobe Design standard CS 5, then you
need to purchase the Volume license copy of Framemaker 11 and Adobe Design
Standard CS 6 as Adobe is not selling FM 9 and CS 5 anymore, then any one from
the customer services team will do the backward license to FM 9 and CS 5.
Please let me know in case of any doubt.

Thanks
Priyank

Does anyone on the list know how (if?) I can license another copy of my
existing version of FrameMaker? We are looking to bring in another writer at
least for the short term - and maybe as a part time permanent position. I would
also likely need to buy an additional license for my copy of Adobe Creative
Suite 5 Design Standard.

FM9 does everything I need and I'd rather not deal with upgrading to FM 11
right now as my deadlines can't afford to take a hit if things need to be
massaged in any way.

FrameMaker (dita) and SVN

2012-12-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
There's no integration but it's easy to use and works fine.

I've found the TortoiseSVN client problematic. I recommend using
either the command-line client or the free version of SmartSVN.

Checking out files just creates local copies, it does not lock them as
in some other source control systems. With unstructured FM files,
since they can't be merged you should lock them in SVN if there's any
chance someone else might try to work on them at the same time. With
DITA source, you could go either way.

Recent Book on FrameMaker Structured Publishing

2012-12-05 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
For what it's worth, a quick look at Amazon shows some copies of this book
still available The interface may have changed, but I expect most of the
structured principles haven't.

"FrameMaker(R) 7: The Complete Reference, by Sarah O'Keefe and Sheila Loring"

http://www.amazon.com/FrameMaker-Complete-Reference-Sarah-OKeefe/dp/0072223618/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8=1354737410=8-10=Structured+FrameMaker

I am using FM 8 (structured) and may upgrade someday but I'll keep this
book until it's pried from my cold dead hands. :-)
Best FrameMaker book I've ever owned (and I have their unstructured Frame 8
book also).

My bad. Is the most recent book on structured publishing with FrameMaker
actually "Structured Publishing from the Desktop: Frame Technology's
Framemaker," published in 1992?

That was the Sarah O'Keefe book I was thinking of when I mistakenly
posted the link to Unstructured Framemaker 11.
