Re: FrameMaker (dita) and SVN
There's no integration but it's easy to use and works fine. I've found the TortoiseSVN client problematic. I recommend using either the command-line client or the free version of SmartSVN. Checking out files just creates local copies, it does not lock them as in some other source control systems. With unstructured FM files, since they can't be merged you should lock them in SVN if there's any chance someone else might try to work on them at the same time. With DITA source, you could go either way. On Wed, Dec 5, 2012 at 2:03 AM, etudsb...@cpaglobal.com wrote: Hi all, I currently use FrameMaker to author DITA files. I was wondering how practical it is to use this pairing. Is there any integration between the new versions of FrameMaker and SVN? Or do I have to check out the files in a separate SVN client before opening the files in FrameMaker? ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. I've worked with many people in three jobs, writers and engineers alike ... myself included ... who use TortoiseSVN without issues. Except for the fact that, because it's a Windows Explorer plug-in, it has the same refresh issues as Explorer has. Typical example is you'll do a commit (aka check-in) and the icons SVN puts next to files and folders don't change; they still look like they need to be committed. The solution is to do another commit and make sure everything got checked in. Unless you prefer the command line or need to script it start off with TortoiseSVN and move away from it if you have issues. The other thing to consider is what most other people in your company use. RE: FrameMaker (dita) and SVN
I've also used TortoiseSVN for years without any issues. The local files wouldn't be out of sync with the repository unless unversioned files that had been created (but not added to SVN) were not committed (i.e., you have local files the repository doesn't know about) or you had failed to update from the repository (the repository has files [or versions of files] your local system doesn't). I've never had issues with local files not getting committed to the repository; and that includes working in the same building as the repository as well as connecting through a VPN from thousands of miles away. To Steve's point about the icons being out of sync, I have seen this from time to time. Rather than doing a commit, one could do a SVN Cleanup where you refresh the shell overlay icons. -Lief -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Robert Lauriston Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2012 11:31 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: FrameMaker (dita) and SVN My problem with TortoiseSVN was that my local files would be out of sync with the repository despite repeated commits.
