FrameMaker 10.x and Windows 8?
I looked back through list discussions and I don't see any discussion of problems/questions/experiences using FrameMaker 10.x and Windows 8... actually I'm not seeing discussions of ANY version of Frame being used with Win8. While I am still using Windows 7 Enterprise, I'm looking at a desktop upgrade later this year and depending on when that occurs, it very well may be that I am forced to use Windows 8 (organizational standards; I won't have an option to remain on Win7). Hi Keith, Try this, Wherever the Framemaker document or book is on your system, copy the complete stuff from there and paste it in Local Disk C:/ of the computer, make sure there is no folder tree like C:/documents/Keith/keith.fm...,the Framemaker document should be in the root folder without any folder tree like only in C:/ Once you have the Framemaker document there, open Robohelp and link the Framemaker document from the new location C:/ and that should fix all your issues with XREF's. And while we are on the topic of fonts and FrameMaker, can someone suggest a reasonable way to get the ZapfDingbat font cheaply, since the default FM installation often complains about this font not being available (even using their templates). BTW: I understand Adobe not wanting to license it with its products anymore, but the default replacement that FM substitutes is completely silly. Random links in pdf don't work, but only on RHEL 5
Hi All, I have TCS 2.5, which I use to create a large documentation set that includes several manuals. I created a pdf that acts as the documentation set overview, and it has links (cross-references in the source FM file) to major topics in each of the manuals. When I open the pdf on a Windows 7 64 bit OS, all the links in this pdf work correctly. When I open the same pdf on a RHEL 5 64 bit OS, some of the links work, and some of them don't. I have tried recreating the cross-references in FrameMaker, and that actually did get rid of some of the broken links. But I still have a pesky few that I can't get to work. When I say they don't work, I mean when you click on them, nothing happens. I'm using Acrobat Reader 9.5.3 on RHEL5 and Reader X on Windows. Word count at the .book level? (FM11)
Greetings all, We will be providing word counts for future documents. I know how to do a wordcount inside an .FM file with the Document Reports Utility -- but is there a way to do the same across an entire .BOOK file? We don't have access to FrameScriptin the past we couldn't even get funding for plug-ins from Silicon Prairie Software, but so far their readability add-on is the only thing I can spot. (Side rant: this is why I've been off the list for so many years -- my department has been lagging so far behind the editions that I didn't have much to offer. Adding Files to New Book
File names for my publication begin with a numeral (e.g., 1frontmatter.fm, 2preface.fm)--helps keep them in order more easily. Typically I might have 10 files to assemble into a book; they appear in ascending order in the book window. I previously had Frame 9. When I chose add files to fill a new book, selected the files as a group, and clicked the Add button, the files appeared in the wrong order in the book window: half (files 1 through 5) were ascending and half (files 5 through 10) were descending. So in the book window, the files listed vertically were 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I had to manually rearrange them. We recently moved to Frame 11. I just created a new book into which I imported my files for the new edition. Using the same steps, the files listed vertically are 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And I still have to manually rearrange them. What causes this and how can I get the files to appear in ascending order without manual intervention? I can't speak to FM 11, and I've never seen the half and half behavior. But I recall that the order in which they appear is the reverse of the order in which they're selected, with the exception of the first or last selected (I don't recall which). And this was a Windows behavior, not an FM behavior. That is, the same behavior occurred when selecting multiple files to add to an email message, etc. Try selecting in reverse order -- that is, select file 10 first and then shift-click file 1. HTH! The file order has always been reversed for me when adding multiple files to a book going back to Frame 7 and possibly even Frame 5.5 which I learned back in 1998). Exactly what is the problem you have with Adobe Pi? Adobe Pi was designed to serve as a substitute for Zapf Dingbats originally for Acrobat and Reader and then for other Adobe applications. Although the design of each of the glyphs is not identical, Adobe Pi does do a fairly good job as a substitute and in some cases, the glyphs are much more modern looking than Zapf Dingbat's highly dated look. If you really want ITC Zapf Dingbats, you really need to look no further than any printer you have that has Adobe PostScript. Each such printer should have a host software package that includes copies of all the printer resident fonts, including the Type 1 version of ITC Zapf Dingbats for use on computers using the particular printer. Please repeat after me, PDF is a binary file format! You cannot create, edit, or in most cases readily examine a PDF file in an text editor. And in many if not most cases, content streams are internally compressed. In terms of Martha's original issue, in theory such cross reference links should work cross platform. If the PDF file was being corrupted going cross-platform, you'd have many more problems than hyperlinks that don't respond. Perhaps there is an issue of Reader not properly receiving the mouse clicks. An experiment you might want to try is increasing the display magnification for a page area with problematic links and see if the links still act dead. If not, my hypothesis about receiving the mouse clicks may be correct. Hi All, I have TCS 2.5, which I use to create a large documentation set that includes several manuals. I created a pdf that acts as the documentation set overview, and it has links (cross-references in the source FM file) to major topics in each of the manuals. When I open the pdf on a Windows 7 64 bit OS, all the links in this pdf work correctly. When I open the same pdf on a RHEL 5 64 bit OS, some of the links work, and some of them don't. I have tried recreating the cross-references in FrameMaker, and that actually did get rid of some of the broken links. But I still have a pesky few that I can't get to work. When I say they don't work, I mean when you click on them, nothing happens. I'm using Acrobat Reader 9.5.3 on RHEL5 and Reader X on Windows. Adding Files to New Book
File names for my publication begin with a numeral (e.g., "1frontmatter.fm", "2preface.fm")--helps keep them in order more easily. Typically I might have 10 files to assemble into a book; they appear in ascending order in the book window. I previously had Frame 9. When I chose "add files" to fill a new book, selected the files as a group, and clicked the "Add" button, the files appeared in the wrong order in the book window: half (files 1 through 5) were ascending and half (files 5 through 10) were descending. So in the book window, the files listed vertically were 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I had to manually rearrange them. We recently moved to Frame 11. I just created a new book into which I imported my files for the new edition. Using the same steps, the files listed vertically are 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And I still have to manually rearrange them. What causes this and how can I get the files to appear in ascending order without manual intervention? I can't speak to FM 11, and I've never seen the "half and half" behavior. But I recall that the order in which they appear is the reverse of the order in which they're selected, with the exception of the first or last selected (I don't recall which). And this was a Windows behavior, not an FM behavior. That is, the same behavior occurred when selecting multiple files to add to an email message, etc. Try selecting in reverse order -- that is, select file 10 first and then shift-click file 1. HTH! The file order has always been reversed for me when adding multiple files to a book going back to Frame 7 and possibly even Frame 5.5 which I learned back in 1998). Exactly what is the problem you have with Adobe Pi? Adobe Pi was designed to serve as a substitute for Zapf Dingbats originally for Acrobat and Reader and then for other Adobe applications. Although the design of each of the glyphs is not identical, Adobe Pi does do a fairly good job as a substitute and in some cases, the glyphs are much more modern looking than Zapf Dingbat's highly dated look. If you really want ITC Zapf Dingbats, you really need to look no further than any printer you have that has Adobe PostScript. Each such printer should have a host software package that includes copies of all the printer resident fonts, including the Type 1 version of ITC Zapf Dingbats for use on computers using the particular printer.
