This is true, but by Apple's own admission the Quartz PDF renderer (or whatever
they call it) doesn't product publication-quality PDF. If you need PDFX or
whatnot, it's not the way to go, but it's fine for screen reading. Implemented
as a 'print to PDF' feature in the print dialog of all apps.

Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition to
your list:

"easyPDF" from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get "without a sponsor
page" ... all their tools cost this, hence the "995"
in the name. :) Their "PdfEdit995" and "PdfSignature995" products adds the
capability to add combine/extract pages, encryption, etc.

I apologize if this is off topic, but here is a list of Acrobat alternatives.
(Please feel free to send me corrections or updates.)

Free:

- A free plug-in is available for Word 2007; comes with 2010

- Bullzip PDF Printer

- PDF995

- PrimoPDF

- CutePDF
   www.acrosoftware.com/Products/CutePDF/Printer.asp

- Create PS file using any PS printer, then use GSview to convert to
PDF (GSview requires GhostScript, also free)

Not Free (prices are as of Sep 27, 2012):

- PDF Fusion ($49.99)
   www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4100140
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nitro Pro ($119.99)
   www.nitropdf.com
Creates bookmarks and links from Word.

- Nuance PDF Converter Pro ($99.99)

- Jaws PDF Creator ($64)
   www.jawspdf.com/products.html
Creates bookmarks and links from Word, but does not support
Windows 7; probably not Windows 8 either.

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Steve Rickaby
I am wondering if there is any simple route from a hyperlinked PDF to
ePub/eBook formats. I have no experience of the latter, but would like to offer
a FrameMaker -> ePub service in future. Any advice would be welcome.

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

Hi, Steve:

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but WebWorks ePublisher has Book ePub
2.0 output (you can see a sample of the output
here:?http://www.webworks.com/Tour/Output_Formats/) and PDF output. You can
generate both outputs at the same time.

Nadine, thanks. What I think I initially meant (and should have said) was
Kindle, but ePub might be an option. I don't know enough about these formats
yet to say anything very sensible about them: will read up. But I see that
'Kindle' is not of itself a format, but a platform that can support eBooks in a
variety of formats, the 'native' one being AZW (and now KF8). But *not* ePub,
although Amazon offer a conversion utility from ePub to Kindle.

If anyone is following this thread with bated breath, here's a clutch of
vaguely helpful links:

*

 (Kindle converters)

Somewhat humorous that a book about how to make a Kindle book is itself
available in a Kindle edition, sort of.

If, as appears above, the Kindle 2G supports PDF, I'm thinking maybe I don't
need to worry about conversion anyway. But the platform also appears to be a
bit of a moving target.

format' is living on a different planet to mine)

Not sure about PDF to EPUB, but there is FM to EPUB capability with the

And the Adobe Tech Comm Suite also produces EPUB.

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Matt Sullivan
Along with the usual suspects (MIF2GO, WW, RH) to output EPUB, RoboHelp also
generates Kindle-compatible files using the same interface (Single Source
Layouts) as its other outputs.

Thus linking a FrameMaker project to RoboHelp (or importing, if you don't have
the integrated TCS) gives you HTML5, EPUB, and Kindle output straight out of
the box.

Thanks and so on to Matt for highlighting TCS5, and Owen for Calibre. So it

It was reported on the Framers list before the holidays that fmerror at

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Scott Prentice
Steve...

It looks like you've probably got more info than you need, but let me
thrown in one more. I maintain this website (below) and try to keep the
Resources page up to date with all of the EPUB tools that I'm aware of.
There's a section on "tools that export to EPUB" that will list many
options ..

 http://epubtest.com/resources.php

Yes .. there are tools that convert from PDF to EPUB .. although the
results may be less than desirable.

One point of caution .. when converting from FM (or Word) to EPUB, most
tools will try to emulate the formatting and layout that exists in the
source document. This is typically not a good idea. For a small screen,
you want the most simple and basic layout possible. This is partially
due to the screen size limitations, but also so that it'll look as good
as possible on the widest array of devices and reader apps. Before
sending a document through one of these tools, try to apply a very
stripped down and simplified template, you'll be much happier with the
results. This also helps with the EPUB to Kindle conversion.

Cheers,

...scott

2013-04-05 Thread David Creamer
Depending on one's needs, I would look at:
A Creative Cloud Subscription @ $50 per month, and/or
A Technical Communication Suite @ $70 per month.

I have both--and yes, it costs me $1440 US per year, but I was spending
close to that on upgrades each year anyway.
(I need to say up-to-date as a trainer.)

Plus, I have other features that come with the Cloud, such as unlimited
submission of InDesign-created iPad apps to Apple.

I get all the updates as they become available, including Illustrator,
Acrobat, and Captivate.
Some companies might like the known monthly fee rather than large upgrade
fees every year or so.
Adobe is getting more strict on how far back one can upgrade from.

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Keith Soltys
A year or so ago, I wrote some articles for TechWhirl about this subject.

E-Books: A Tool Overview for Technical Writers
 http://techwhirl.com/building-e-books-a-tool-overview-for-technical-writers/

E-Book Formats
http://techwhirl.com/e-book-formats/

The articles haven't dated too much since I wrote them.

Most people going to Kindle format will start by building the book in EPUB,
then converting to Amazon's format.

While the E-Ink based Kindles will display PDF files, I've never found viewing
a PDF on them a very satisfactory experience. You really need a tablet for PDFs.

Regards
Keith

It's impossible to displease anyone by fixing bugs, or by improving your QA.

There are a lot of serious UI bugs that were introduced in FM9 that
from what I've heard still haven't been fixed in FM11. You may
remember you asked me to send you a list of those bugs last year.
Here's another copy.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

2. Docked panels often appear behind the document window, and I have
to resize, minimize, or close the document window to use them. Since
window size and position are not saved, I have to resize them dozens
of times a day.

3. Sometimes I have the opposite problem: the side of a window is
completely blocked by the character or paragraph tag catalog, so I
have to minimize, close, or move the panel before I can resize the
window.

4. When I open a panel, sometimes it appears behind another panel
that's already open, and I have to move one or the other before I can
use it.

5. The first time I press Ctrl-f, I can just type the search string,
but after that the focus within the Find/Change seems to be random, so
I can't.

6. After a book has been open for a while, it no longer responds to
menu commands. I can double-click files to open them or use the
right-click menu, but if I try to select a menu command such as Edit >
Update Book or File > Save As PDF the book window minimizes and is no
longer active. The only workaround I've found is to close and reopen
the book window, which I end up doing dozens of times a day.

7. A separate FrameMaker button appears on the taskbar for each file
that's open.

8. The FrameMaker console window appears behind the application
window. Bringing it to the front is sometimes difficult.

9. When I first start FrameMaker, Ctrl-F6 switches between open
windows. After a while, it stops working. (I can use alt-key menu
navigation.)

10. Alt-key menu letters are not displayed for all menu commands (e.g.
Documents on the Window menu).

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing
Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more
than one document is open) instead of back to the other application.

I eventually gave up on rearranging FM10's windows and pods, which
means I don't encounter most of those any more, but I'm probably
10-15% slower as a result.

iPad displays are 1024x768 (or twice that at twice the ppi for the

PDFs. There's no need to use a special layout.

Robert,

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. I will ensure
that this is sent to the appropriate internal parties.

Regarding my intent in "it's impossible to please everyone," what I was
referring to is that various feature requests and UI enhancements requested in
this formats sometimes cancel each other out. Obviously, we can't please
everyone.

It's impossible to displease anyone by fixing bugs, or by improving your QA.

There are a lot of serious UI bugs that were introduced in FM9 that from what
I've heard still haven't been fixed in FM11. You may remember you asked me to
send you a list of those bugs last year.
Here's another copy.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing Alt-Tab again
takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more than one document is
open) instead of back to the other application.

FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Keith Soltys
Formatting for ebooks is very different for formatting for fixed layout like
print or PDF. It's more akin to formatting for an online help format like CHM
or webhelp. Your reader has a little 4x6 window into which you have to shoehorn
your text, and you don't know what font size or possibly even what font they
are using. Additionally, the formats themselves (EPUB2, EPUB3, MOBI) have major
limitations in how they handle common formatting elements (indents, bullets,
interline and paragraph spacing), tables, and graphics. You have tools that
introduce their own bugs (Calibre, InDesign) And finally, you cannot assume
that your carefully crafted file, which displays perfectly on the device you
tested it on (a Nook, for example) will display properly on another device from
a different manufacturer (a Kobo or an iPad).

It?s like the wild west out there right now - think of the early days of the
web, with incompatible browser standards and various flavours of HTML - but
worse.

If you have to distribute a highly formatted document, ebook formats may not be
the best solution, especially if that document contains tables with complex
layouts. PDF works well on tablets, but not so well for E-Ink based readers.
You really need to test your documents on the devices your readers will be
using to see what gives the best results.

Regards
Keith

ANN: April 11th Webinar: FrameMaker 11 workspaces and quick edits (incl. "pods")

2013-04-05 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I don't announce most of my webinars in this forum, but thought this one may be
of interest since it focuses on the "new" UI, how to customize workspaces, and
how to deal with docking menus, and when to use pods as a timesaver. NOTE: this
webinar will be approached from a newcomer's or beginner's level.

Webinar will be recorded: if you register you will receive follow up email with
the URL.

TWEET below, followed by webinar description:

April 11th 10AM PAC Webinar: "For Word Users: Sess 6) customized workspaces &
Quick Edits in #FrameMaker 11" http://adobe.ly/11dYMCf @maxwellhoffmann

Every product has its frustrations; one commonly associated with Word is the
number of times that you must "drill down" several levels to get to a desired
menu. FrameMaker has approached this challenge in a unique way with
"workspaces," which present the most commonly used menus associated with
particular tasks.

Users benefit greatly from their ability to customize workspaces by docking and
placing collapsed or expanded menus where they wish to find them. Even without
customization, FrameMaker will gradually reduce the choices available as you
move into highly specific tasks, like editing DITA in the XML Code View. If you
work with contractors or team members who only occasionally assist with
FrameMaker projects, you can greatly reduce the learning curve by creating
customized workspaces with very limited choices.

Quick edits refers to a number of convenient short cuts that will display
choices (e.g. paragraph styles, conditional tags, DITA elements) in a vertical
catalog adjacent to your current insertion point. Mastering this feature
enables you to author complex content even more quickly.

Whether you are a Word user contemplating a move to FrameMaker, or a veteran
FrameMaker users still using an older version, you may benefit greatly from
this session. Join presenter Maxwell Hoffmann, Adobe's Global Product
Evangelist for Tech Comm Suite, who has extensive tech comm publishing
experience, having worked for a variety of publishing vendors and translation
agencies before coming on board with Adobe. He is a former FrameMaker product

I am wondering if there is any simple route from a hyperlinked PDF to
ePub/eBook formats. I have no experience of the latter, but would like to offer

Hi, Steve:

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but WebWorks ePublisher has Book ePub
2.0 output (you can see a sample of the output here:
http://www.webworks.com/Tour/Output_Formats/) and PDF output. You can generate
both outputs at the same time.

(* Whoever wrote 'Word is a great tool to use because it's extremely easy to
format' is living on a different planet to mine)

Along with the usual suspects (MIF2GO, WW, RH) to output EPUB, RoboHelp also generates Kindle-compatible files using the same interface (Single Source Layouts) as its other outputs. Thus linking a FrameMaker project to RoboHelp (or importing, if you don't have the integrated TCS) gives you HTML5, EPUB, and Kindle output straight out of the box.

Re: FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

Cheers,

...scott

RE: FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Keith Soltys
A year or so ago, I wrote some articles for TechWhirl about this subject.

E-Books: A Tool Overview for Technical Writers
 http://techwhirl.com/building-e-books-a-tool-overview-for-technical-writers/

E-Book Formats
http://techwhirl.com/e-book-formats/

The articles haven't dated too much since I wrote them.

Most people going to Kindle format will start by building the book in EPUB,
then converting to Amazon's format.

While the E-Ink based Kindles will display PDF files, I've never found viewing
a PDF on them a very satisfactory experience. You really need a tablet for PDFs.

Re: FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
iPad displays are 1024x768 (or twice that at twice the ppi for the
Retina models). Standard three-pane web help displays fine. So do
PDFs. There's no need to use a special layout.

RE: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-04-05 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann

Obviously, we can't please
everyone.

RE: FrameMaker -> PDF -> ePub format?

2013-04-05 Thread Keith Soltys

It’s like the wild west out there right now - think of the early days of the
web, with incompatible browser standards and various flavours of HTML - but
worse.

If you have to distribute a highly formatted document, ebook formats may not be
the best solution, especially if that document contains tables with complex
layouts. PDF works well on tablets, but not so well for E-Ink based readers.
You really need to test your documents on the devices your readers will be
using to see what gives the best results.

He is a former FrameMaker product
marketing manager with Frame Technology (before Adobe acquired the product),
and has trained over 1,200 people in scalable publishing solutions over the
years.
