Success with eliminating hairlines: How to...

2013-07-23 Thread Robert CH Shell
Dear Framers:
Thanks to Allison Craig I have eliminated the problem.
Here is how to do it:

Adobe Acrobat 11
Preferences
>Page display>
Tick, yes, tick AKA "switch on "

"Enhance thin lines"

In my illogical mind I avoided this item as I thought it was the one
preference that was CAUSING the problem. I was disappointed that it was not
ticked.
I could not help wondering if the toggle is not upside down.

In the meantime, please add this to your Adobe dictionary

Enhance means Eliminate

Onward, and a big thank you, Allison

Auto-rotate pages in PDF (Art Campbell)

2013-07-23 Thread Jay Mahler
Art,
Thanks for the suggestion, but the PDF version is out of my control. This is a
document going to a large Federal agency, and that is what they require because
of their old systems. Besides, I ran a test with PDF Compatibility set to
"Acrobat 8.0 (PDF 1.7)," and it made no difference.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Jay

Unwanted hairlines around graphics in pdfs created by FM11 (some progress)

2013-07-23 Thread Mike Wickham
Careful. Adobe recommends against having Acrobat and Adobe Reader on the
same computer. They sometimes, especially if different versions, step
all over each other and break things.

Adobe Tech Comm Content Strategy and Tools Survey

2013-07-23 Thread Kapil Verma
Hello Everyone,

This is Kapil Verma, Sr. Product Manager at Adobe. First of all, apologies to
those who faced a crash while filling out the survey. Just to quickly update
you all on the issue. After we heard about it from a few respondents, the team
did look into this issue, isolated it and has fixed it. They found that it was
a random issue, which impacted some users, while others were able to fill out
the survey. Furthermore, since the issue was fixed, we haven't heard any survey
crashes being reported. So, it should work fine for you.

Few other things
* if you encountered a crash earlier, you should be able to re-login to the
survey (with the email and password you specified at the beginning) and
complete the survey. Your answers should have been saved.
* If you still face an issue, please email me and we will get this looked into

We look forward to hearing your feedback on our products and understanding from
you how content workflows are evolving in your organization. Thanks in advance
for filling out the survey.

Thanks,

Structured FM font issue ; char tag applied but format is not being applied WAS: Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-23 Thread Craig Ede
This might be the perfect time for this question:

In a structured xml document we've defined an element called that is used
to contain glyphs that are known to exist in Arial Unicode MS. Most of the rest
of the document text is in Arial. We have the element mapping to a
character tag called unicodeFont that is defined to change the font family to
Arial Unicode MS and set the Weight and Variation as Regular.

When the xml is brought into Framemaker, all the elements end up as
Arial, many of which then show as question marks, yet they are tagged with the
correct character format. If we select one and change the family to Arial
Unicode MS and update all, all the characters become what we expect.

If anyone can explain why these are not coming in as Arial Unicode MS as they
should, I would greatly appreciate it. Our italics formatting uses the same
strategy, and it works. Why would the Font Family be different.

Thanks.

Craig

Auto-rotate pages in PDF

2013-07-23 Thread Chris Coggins
We had this same problem and our solution was to set the graphics
resolution to 600dpi, and set the paper size to match or exceed the largest
page size in the FM file in the advanced print options. That solved the
cut-off problems for us.

And did you notice the repeated questions? Obviously, someone copied and
pasted into the template and changed the questions.

Re: Auto-rotate pages in PDF

2013-07-23 Thread Art Campbell
Have you tried a different Acrobat level? Compatibility with version 5
would be 6 generations old -- pre XP, I think.
I think you'd be safe with v 8 or 9, and it may make a difference just
because so many features have been added since v 5 that the inserted code
may be obtuse.

RE: Adobe Tech Comm Content Strategy and Tools Survey

Thanks,

Kapil Verma

I just finished the survey ... without any crashes. Used Chrome. Maybe the
problems were browser-dependent issues?

Auto-rotate pages in PDF

2013-07-23 Thread Jay Mahler
Framers,

I'm stumped again. I'm running FM9 V9.0p237 and Acrobat Distiller 9.5.1283 on
Win7.

I'm distilling a large file that mostly has portrait pages with some embedded
landscape pages. The file is set up so that "Apply Master Pages" automatically
sets the appropriate portrait/landscape orientation after edits. When I review
the pages in FM, they all have correct orientation. When I generate the PDF,
the landscape pages are generated as if they are portrait (they are cut off on
the right and left). The Distiller job settings has "Compatibility" set to
"Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)" and "Auto-Rotate Pages" set to "Individually." The
other options shouldn't really matter.

My client is still using FM8 (I save as FM8 when I return files), but she has
Acrobat 11 installed. She can correctly generate the PDF for the same files.

This has worked for me in the past with these files (a couple of years ago with
FM9). Has anyone run into this issue?

Jay

Keyboard shortcuts causing crash on FM appserver installation

2013-07-23 Thread Mike Thorn
Hi, all.

A new FrameMaker 11 installation on a Citrix application server crashes
instantly when I press F8 or F9, as well as the alternate Ctrl+8/Ctrl+9
shortcuts. It's the regular FrameMaker "serious problem" message, showing
internal error codes 11024, 23327044, 26070837.

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
FM: 11.0.2.384

Frame 9 on the same appserver never had a shortcut problem, and FM 11 on my
Windows 7 laptop is fine.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Mike
