Dear Russ Framers, I tried MIF washing, and book updating, all to no avail. I suspect it's a nasty bug, but one that only a few people will experience. I've been having a problem with adding FrameMaker structured documents into a structured book, and I wonder if any of you guys have experienced the same or similar effect. FWIW, I'm using FrameMaker 10, running on Windows7 - both with the latest patches installed. The files are organised in sub-section documents, such as ENR_3_3_en.fm being the ENR 3.3 document, and sub-sub-section documents having additional numbering, such as: ENR_3_3_1_en.fm If I select a range of documents in an explorer window, and drag the documents inside the book file, I appear to be able to get the whole structure of the document messed up. I dragged the files to be after the ENR_3_3_en.fm document, and before the ENR_3_4_en.fm document. The book file appears to have the documents in the correct order ENR_3_3_en.fm, followed by ENR_3_3_1_en.fm, ENR_3_3_2_en.fm, ENR_3_3_3_en.fm, etc. but the structure view shows that they are located /after/ the ENR_3_5_en.fm document! The effect of adding these documents gets even stranger when I noticed that the ENR_3_4_en.fm, ENR_3_5_en.fm, and ENR_3_6_en.fm - which /were/ in the correct order /before /the drag-drop function, are somehow reversed. If I try rearranging some of the files in the structure view window, I have seen FrameMaker crash a few times. I managed to add the files in the correct order by: a. move the insertion pointer in the structure view b. select the FrameMaker Add Files... menu item c. In the Add Files to book dialog, with the details being shown: reserve the Name sort order in the Windows dialog, so it shows Z - A ordering d. select the second file in the reversed order [e.g. the y file] e. shift-select the last file in the reversed order [e.g. the a file] f. control-select the first file in the reversed order [e.g. the z file] ... but even with this, I found that FrameMaker added the files into the book 2 elements /after/ where I had moved the insertion pointer. Has anyone else observed these behaviours before? // Simon BUCH -- M-AIS // [still working with FrameMaker after all these years] ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as simon.b...@m-ais.com. TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you go back to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later?
Hi everyone I'm thinking about moving to the TCS subscription model (please don't all flame me at once). Does anyone know what'd happen if I wanted to change back to outright ownership in a couple of years? E.g. If I stayed on the subscription model until TCS6 was released, would I then be able to buy TCS6 outright, at the upgrade prices? Or would I be stuck with buying a full TCS6 licence? I'm not keen on breaking our upgrade chain. Also, does anyone know if the TCS version of Illustrator stays in sync with the Creative Cloud version? Or could there be a delay while Adobe integrate a new version of Illustrator into the TCS? Thanks! A Pantone colour definition question
Here's one of those nefarious colour questions ;) I'm using FrameMaker 11, although by the looks of the dialog I've got on my screen, these settings haven't changed since at least Frame 5.5 ;) I'm doing a doc where the company's branding guidelines ask for a squiggly line in a particular colour. They're asking for Pantone 390C The interweb tells me the C suffix stands for Coated. So, if I go to View Colour Definitions, then Colour Definitions, I can chose PANTON(r) Coated from the list. However, the dialog this brings up is offering colours with a CVC suffix. The interweb appears to suggest this means Computer Video? Is that not something different? I am confused! Why doesn't it just say C for the suffix? In any case: the only reason I'm bothering about this at all is: The Branding Guide I'm using also has a suggest CYMK match for the Pantone colour. I can type this in instead, but from reading the FrameMaker documentation, it seems to suggest that if I ask it to put that colour in as a Spot, with a named Pantone ink, then it will make its way through like that into whatever PDF I make? And it will then be up to the printer driver on whatever printer prints it to decide the best CYMK match for Pantone 390C at print time... which is likely to be a better match then me Frame guessing here today. Does this actually work though? Or will Frame still turn the spot-ink named Pantone into an RGB value when distill it to a PDF? (Mind you, if I specify it as a CMYK, it's almost certainly going to RGB-ify it? Or has Frame11 stopped all that nonsense? I've read much wailing and gnashing of teeth about this online) Regards, David *** Confidentiality Notice: This e-mail, including any associated or attached files, is intended solely for the individual or entity to which it is addressed. Re: TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you go back to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later?
I think the only way to get a definitive answer is to ask Adobe. I suspect that by the time we get to TCS6 the only way will be with a subscription model. As long as the annual fee is not more than we're used to paying for our regular upgrades (depending on how often you upgrade of course) then we'll be no worse off. My problam as a freelancer is that I might not need to use any of the TCS components for 2 or 3 years, but if I don't keep up the subscription I'm left with dead products. I've just upgraded to TCS4 so can probably avoid the problem for a while ... --- Peter On 2013-07-29 06:37, rebecca officer wrote: Hi everyone I'm thinking about moving to the TCS subscription model (please don't all flame me at once). Re: TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you go back to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later?
Switching back to an owned version won't be an issue: in a couple of years TCS will be subscription-only. That's the path Adobe took with Creative Suite-- first year or two subscription was an option, soon it will be mandatory. They get more $ by forcing all users to upgrade with each new release whether they want to or not, so barring the CS subscription-only model causing mass migration to other products (sadly, not likely), TCS will go the same path. Monopolies are decidedly not consumer-friendly. Nobody--including Adobe--can say with any certainty that perpetual licenses (as opposed to monthly or annual subscription licenses) will even exist in a couple of years. I suspect that you are correct that mass migration to other products is unlikely, but based on e-mail I have received in response to my posts, a few of us are indeed moving to non-Adobe products. This will probably not have any real impact to Adobe though - they do not care about small quantity (hence, small revenue) users anymore. Re: A Pantone colour definition question
If you include the graphic as an EPS file, it gets passed around the Windows GDI. So Windows won't RGBify it and will leave CMYK and Pantone intact. Re: A Pantone colour definition question
David, define your color as Pantone 390C, specify spot color, and use the CMYK representation as the definition. Arnis may jump in to explain when Windows stopped bolloxing the colors, but with Win7, you should have no problems with the file. Doing a Save as PDF, using the Adobe PDF print driver should respect the spot color in the PDF, and if sent to a CMYK device, respect the color you defined in the doc. Try all of this and let me know if it doesn't work as promised. -Matt Matt R. Any Issues Using Acrobat Pro XI with TCS 1, FM8?
Hello Fellow Framers, Is anyone successfully using the TCS1 package (or Frame 8) with Acrobat XI? Are there any gotchas or known issues I need to watch out for? I am using TCS 1 (FM8) with Acrobat Pro 9 on a Windows 7, 64-bit PC (recently upgraded) with no troubles creating FM to PDF output. However, Microsoft 2010 products are not compatible with Acrobat Pro 9 (e.g., I cannot get metadata from a Word doc into the PDF). This is a known incompatibility and the resolution is to upgrade to Acrobat X or XI. I will not be upgrading or changing the TCS setup. The plan is to upgrade the Acrobat only at this time. TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you go back to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later?
I think the only way to get a definitive answer is to ask Adobe. I suspect that by the time we get to TCS6 the only way will be with a subscription model. As long as the annual fee is not more than we're used to paying for our regular upgrades (depending on how often you upgrade of course) then we'll be no worse off. My problam as a freelancer is that I might not need to use any of the TCS components for 2 or 3 years, but if I don't keep up the subscription I'm left with dead products. I've just upgraded to TCS4 so can probably avoid the problem for a while ... --- Peter On 2013-07-29 06:37, rebecca officer wrote: > Hi everyone > > I'm thinking about moving to the TCS subscription model (please don't > all flame me at once). > > Does anyone know what'd happen if I wanted to change back to outright > ownership in a couple of years? Nobody--including Adobe--can say with any certainty that perpetual licenses (as opposed to monthly or annual subscription licenses) will even exist in a couple of years. Do you think that anybody could have told you two years ago what the terms would be for a TCS subscription license today? If you know someone with a crystal ball that is that good, you should be asking them for stock tips and not fretting pointlessly about license policies that haven't yet been formulated. -Fred Ridder Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2013 17:37:37 +1200 From: rebecca.offi...@alliedtelesis.co.nz To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you goback to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later? Thanks! Rebecca -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ? They get more $ by forcing all users to upgrade with each new release whether they want to or not, so barring the CS subscription-only model causing mass migration to other products (sadly, not likely), TCS will go the same path. Z -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A Pantone colour definition question
If you include the graphic as an EPS file, it gets passed around the Windows GDI. So Windows won't RGBify it and will leave CMYK and Pantone intact. A Pantone colour definition question
A Pantone colour definition question
I think you are overthinking this. You'll notice that if you choose Pantone Uncoated that the suffix is CVU. Take them at their word. Computer video is never coated or uncoated. I'm not even sure how they would do that. Craig From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Davis, David snipped... So, if I go to View > Colour > Definitions, then Colour Definitions, I can chose "PANTONR Coated" from the list. However, the dialog this brings up is offering colours with a "CVC" suffix. The interweb appears to suggest this means "Computer Video"? Is that not something different? I am confused! Why doesn't it just say "C" for the suffix? -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: <http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/attachments/20130730/14d1c213/attachment.html>
Thank you in advance for sharing any insights and experiences! Jasmine Graham Technical Writer, Research and Development Wireline Services Weatherford ? 481 Winscott Road ? Fort Worth ? Adobe has something of a captive market with InDesign. The same isn't true for FrameMaker and RoboHelp. On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 7:10 AM, Syed Zaeem Hosain (Syed.Hosain at aeris.net) wrote: > ? Ummm ... the extract above is not from me actually. However, I would add that InDesign has an alternative - but not clear to me how good an alternative it is (if at all) - in the new "Page & Layout Designer" from Xara. Some people here are evaluating it. Z
