Set the numbering to continue from previous page in book. I don't know why this

I have a template (taken from a book) that has a master page with a chapter
number style defined - it's used on the header.

This works fine in the original book.

When I create a new book and new fm documents in that book, the chapter numbers
don't update.

Why could this be?

RE: Chapter numbers

2013-08-10 Thread Alastair Dent
Ignore previous email.

I have documents that start with a tag called 'ChapTitle' and some that start
with Heading1.

The reference pages are set up so that pages with 'ChapTitle' on them will use
the 'First' master page. This has a header with the chapter number in it. Pages
starting with Heading1 are Right/Left and don't have a chapternumber

Every file in the book is set to 'Continue Numbering from Previous Chapter in
book'.

The chapter numbers increment correctly.

The document with a Heading1 tag should show the numbering '3.1'. It doesn't,
it shows '4.1'. The chapter number has incremented.

Why is this?

Re: Windows 7 + FrameMaker 11 = BOOM!

2013-08-10 Thread John Sgammato
Hi Ken,
I have used FM11 unstructured on Win7 with files on the network since FM11
was released. I have no problems.
Maybe your files are too big with the embedded ages?

On Thursday, August 8, 2013, Ken Poshedly wrote:

 so.

And it's been nothing but problems ever since, with unpredictable crashes
on the desktop computers used by the two contract writers, even though all
three FM 11 platforms have all the Adobe patches.

One thing which does seem consistent is that FM11 does not seem to work
well with files located on our network server, yet that is really the
method here. Symptoms may include _extremely_ long times to open, save and
close files and MAY include the abovementioned FrameMaker crashes, though
we have not yet confirmed that.

The fix is for the contract writers to copy files from our 4-terrabyte
network drive onto external hard drives cabled to their terminals and for
 my coworker to copy files directly onto his computer's internal hard drive;
then copy the revised file back into place in its location on the network
 drive.

The two contract writer desktop computers have ridiculously internal small
hard drives. (One is 29 megabytes and the other is 185 megabytes I've been
 told.)

Me? I'm happy as a clam with Windows XP and FrameMaker 8 working across
the network with no FM crashes or other problems -- though I do have to
suffer through the long times to open, save and close files because we now
must embed all our graphics instead of referencing them. (I've boohoo'd
about that here in the past, so I'll not repeat the faulty reasoning for it
 once again.)

But doom is in my future, as all four of us are soon to get new platforms
with Windows 7 and FM 11.

 This I really dread.

Who else out there is having what seems to be incompatibility problems
with platforms equipped with FM 11 and Windows 7 and how have you gotten
 around those problems?

 Off-list accounts, etc, are fine.

Re: An interesting Mif2Go project - will this work?

2013-08-10 Thread John Sgammato
It's been a big project, but we were successful!
Here's the skinny:
I need to import unstructured FM content into a new SalesForce Knowledge
knowledge base. Individual procedures written in FM11 get published out via
Mif2Go as Standard HTML (not help), and then imported by SalesForce with
the help of a .CSV file. Overall it required about a 30-step procedure to
get the content into SF, but now I plan to trim down the process. Then I
will write it up and present it at the STC Summit or some other place.
The first question is: Why is this so difficult? I think it's because it is
a technically challenging project that demands a lot of up-front work on
the FM side, so no knowledgebase provider wants to develop and support it,
and Adobe doesn't see the value in it for the neglected FrameMaker product
(and market!)

The trick is to produce what SalesForce needs from what FM can give it.
SalesForce's importer is pretty primitive and inflexible. AFAIK this is not
unusual; last year I tried the same thing with a MindTouch knowledge base
and that could import only from a .CHM, and even that was plagued with
problems.
SalesForce needs a set of HTML pages saved in a particular nested file
structure, accompanied by a .CSV file that provides the title of each
article, its address, and some other information. The HTML, folders, and
CSV must all be provided in a .ZIP along with a Project file created by the
SalesForce admin.

FM's Save as HTML is buggy, barely supported by Adobe, and its HTML is not
very clean. I could not generate good individual HTML pages from RoboHelp.
Mif2Go offers the flexibility I needed.
To develop the CSV was a different adventure. I needed a list of article
titles mapped to the HTML file names, which are autogenerated with names
like aa100543.htm. I could open each file and copy the title (there is a
Mif2Go setting to make the title match the FM Heading 1 or Heading 2), but
that would be tedious and error-prone for hundreds of files.

Jeremy had a workaround to get my titles and file names together. After
generating the Standard HTML output, I generated OmniHelp output just to
get a single .JS page with the list I needed. I deleted all the rest of the
output, keeping only that file.
Then I edited the file with several search-and-replaces and saved it as
.CSV.

Then I was able to zip together the HTML and the .CSV and hand it off to
the SalesForce Admin, who (after a few false starts) finally reproducibly
imported 24 and then 56 files. We have some bugs, but we think we know how
to fix them.

Now I have to refine the process, learn how to optimize my FM content, and
document it because once the knowledgebase is launched with my existing FM
content, I am committed to updating it forever!

Thanks everyone for all your input on this complex project!
john

7.2 to 11 Upgrade and reference pages

2013-08-10 Thread David Millis
I recently upgraded from Frame 7.2 to 11 and have found that some of my
reference page elements didn't make the transition very well.

I have 2-column, 1-row tables with Note, Important, or Warning in the
first cell. These labels are non-anchored frames in the reference page and
appeared just fine in Frame 7.2 body pages. In Frame 11, these labels are cut
off so that when I insert one of these tables into the body, the Note label
displays No, Important displays Import, and Warning displays Warn.

My question is 2-part: First, how do I adjust these unanchored frames in the
Reference page so that when I insert a new one of these tables, the full word
displays in the first cell?

My second question is: Is there a way to fix all of the existing tables
globally that are already in the document so I don't have to manually stretch
the first cell on every occurrence of these tables in each of my projects?

Thank you for the help,

David Millis

RE: Windows 7 + FrameMaker 11 = BOOM!

2013-08-10 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi Ken,

One option that you have is to put your files in a SVN repository. If you
do this, then checked out files will be local to the person's computer and
there's no issue with network latency etc. You can certainly do the check
out to an external hard drive to if that's needed. Once the user is done
modifying the files, they just commit them with a click of a button to the
repository.

I have been using SVN with FrameMaker for years and its worked fine without
a problem. I love it because none of the network latency issues that are
associated with later versions of Frame affect you -- because the network
is almost completely removed from the equation. It also makes working over
VPN a breeze, where i'd rather eat broken class then try to edit FM files
on a NFS through VPN.

If you want additional details, let me know.

Sincerely
Joesph Lorenzini

ONE OTHER factor -- if you have aggressive anti-virus software

book or document includes multiple files in networked locations OR
simply big files, a poorly designed or implemented virus scanner will
scan each file each time it's opened and one FM document or book will
typically contain lots of files. Add that to network traffic and
it'll slow things down enough to crash.

It's a problem that's easy to test though -- just disable it for a while.

2013-08-10 Thread Art Campbell
First, if you updated the file by opening the 7 as an 11 and saving,
I'd save the file as a .mif and open that to ensure that you're
working in a file without extra characters and any possible 7 hangover
effects.

Once you know you have clean files, the first things I'd check would
be your table formats -- it sounds as if either the width of the cell
has changed,
or the alignment has changed, maybe from left to center? You should be
able to check this quickly by applying a different table format and
seeing if that changes things.

After that, I'd check the settings in whatever para tags you're using
to format the text -- that also may have been changed in the updare.

working in a file without extra characters and any possible 7 hangover
