RE: Frame 11 (UNstructured Features)

Hi Lin,

No. Kapil Verma did not mention specific bugs. Only that
a large number of bugs was fixed.
Maybe you ask him yourself.

Best regards

DITA conversion and cross-ref IDs

2013-12-09 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

We're currently in the process of converting from Unstructured FrameMaker files
to DITA using FrameMaker 11.
The engineer who's working on the conversion has a question about
cross-references. When he structures the document using the conversion table,
he'd like to be able to save the Idref value for the cross-reference as an
attribute in the element it is wrapped in. At the moment, when he structures
the document, all he can manage is to wrap the text in a element.

If anyone's got any ideas about how to do this - or about how else to avoid
having to manually re-create thousands of cross-refs - I'd be really grateful!
The engineer's happy with scripting, esp Python, so it doesn't have to be a
purely FM solution.

Thanks very much,
Rebecca

DITA conversion and cross-ref IDs

2013-12-09 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rebecca

I agree with Scott and Jeremy:

? If you want to use conversion tables, then Scott's FM2DITA plugin will
definitely help.
? If you have MIF2Go, then most of the cross-references will "just work".
Read chapter 15.10 "Configuring cross references and links for DITA" in the
MIF2Go Help:

Subject: Frame 11 (UNstructured Features)

Sometime last year when Frame 11 came out, there were any number of e-mails
that dealt with (or had links to) what was new in the product.

We are currently looking at whether to move our tech doc team from Frame 9 to
Frame 11 - given that when Frame 12 comes out, we'd have to buy completely new
copies rather than go the update route.

I've looked in my archive and can't find the threads that discussed this. Can
anyone point me in the right direction?

Note that I am interested in details regarding unstructured Frame. I also
realize that there are any number of changes from Frame 10 that may be useful
to us as well.

Alison

DITA conversion and cross-ref IDs

That's just one of hundreds of problems you will have
trying to use the conversion table method. It's grossly
inadequate. Links, graphics, tables... it's a long list.

Um, you already *have* Mif2Go. We spent quite a few
engineer-years working with DITA TC members on many
large conversion projects (including IBM's) to get it
right. And to make it as easy as possible. This has
actually become the second-biggest use case for Mif2Go
(the biggest is still conversion to Word). Save
yourself a BIG bundle of time and money, and use it.

2013-12-09 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Rebecca

I agree with Scott and Jeremy:

• If you want to use conversion tables, then Scott's FM2DITA plugin will
definitely help.
• If you have MIF2Go, then most of the cross-references will "just work".
Read chapter 15.10 "Configuring cross references and links for DITA" in the
MIF2Go Help:

Re: Frame 11 (UNstructured Features)

2013-12-09 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

I also upgraded from 9 to 11. The
improvements that were important to me were:

  - Red squiggly lines under misspelled words. That's a big time
saver for me. I don't have to keep running spellchecks, and it
allows me to work with the document at a smaller view size and not
be concerned about misspelled words. Without the red squiggly
lines I would have to work with documents at a larger view size in
  order to reread it carefully.

  - Memory of that last five search terms. It seems like a small
thing, but it makes it easier to work.

  - Built-in ExtendScript.

At $600 dollars a copy, it is a hard decision. Many free text
editors have the first two features I mentioned. It's a shame we
have to pay so much for an upgrade for features we should have had
  a long time ago.

If I would be working freelance, I think I would learn LaTex
instead of paying the high price of these upgrades.
