SOLVED! Was RE: Changing conditional text settings crashes Frame

2014-01-15 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Anita,

Thank you very much for this description. I also encounter
this crash now and then. Next time I will test your solution.

You say that FrameMaker did not know how to interpret
an end of flow symbol in a hidden cell. However, if I do not
apply any condition to text in table rows which are hidden,
then I _always_ have this end of flow symbol.

When I send FrameMaker files to translation, translation memory
systems import and present text in hidden table rows. Therefore
I apply a condition not only to a table row but also to the text in
the table row.

Best regards

Winfried

Subject: SOLVED! Was RE: Changing conditional text settings crashes Frame

Thanks to everyone who jumped in to help. Besides fixing my file, I learned a
ton!

The problem turned out to be caused by a table whose conditional text settings
were ?funny? (Gary?s word). Meaning:

? The table anchor was unconditional.
? Several table rows had a condition applied.
? Some text inside conditional table cells also had the same condition as the
row applied. However, the end-of-flow symbols in some of these dual-condition
cells were unconditional. (Don?t ask why I set the table up this way. It made
sense at the time.)

It seems that Frame didn?t know what to do with an end-of-cell symbol that has
no cell in which to live?as happened when I hid the condition. That?s actually
kind of reasonable, although Frame could handle it more gracefully than
crashing. (Apparently this has been a known bug at least since version 7.
Adobe folks?)

When I cleaned up the table to use conditions only on text (not table rows or
cells), everything worked fine.

Also, thanks to Stuart for pointing me to the MIF Reference. The MIF equivalent
of ?don?t Show Condition Indicators? is this line in the Document statement.

Not the most intuitive term for it, but there you have it.

Thanks all!
Anita

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Simon BUCH
I've taken a quick look at this new release.

a. There's still no right-to-left language support.

b. There's still the requirement for activation via internet, and the
help pages reference material on web pages.
This makes the product impractical for customers on military/corporate
grade networks with no internet access.

c. In Kapil VERMA's blog entry, there's a section about "Licensing options":
'Furthermore, we are providing both perpetual and subscription
licensing options on all our products. We do realize that the licensing
needs of our customers vary and hence, we are offering both the options
for you. There is also special upgrade pricing available as well as
limited time promotional price for some customers. Please refer to the
product homepages for exact pricing information (links below).'

Really?

Thanks for the links, Winfried.

Does anyone know if FM12 (and also FM11) come in 32-bit AND 64-bit
versions, or are they both strictly 32 bits? I've only been able to find
that FM9 was 32-bit only.

Thanks,

when it installs it end up in the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Thanks for the links. Some links on the FAQ page for FM 12 are broken ...
notably one that takes you to the subscription pricing (including a
"promotional" pricing discount).

Also, sorry to beat on this drum still, but the upgrade price of $399 from
FrameMaker 11 is still too high to be justifiable (for *my* needs ... YMMV).
Particularly after having spent many dollars on upgrading from version 9 to 10
to 11 for no real benefit for my needs - these should all have been treated as
bug fixes.

*And* my final two years of paying for license "upgrades" saw NO benefit at
all, since there were no upgrades during that period (I paid for the FM 11
upgrade separately!) ... I kinda feel like I should receive FrameMaker 12
without any more "upgrade" payments, but I suspect this will not happen.

BTW, the upgrade price from FM 10 is $599. And from earlier versions: $999 ...
which is same as full cost, so not really an upgrade!

Really?
To help summarize what I read ... as far as I can tell from the various pages
(I am only showing the US costs).

The promotional pricing is for the subscription model of TCS 5:

1. Subscription of TCS 5:$29.99 per month for the
first year (at a discount of 40%) - goes up after 1 year.

For licensees with both FM 9 and Robohelp 8 (as I read it), there is a
promotion discount to the full license price for each product (separately, as I
read it):

1. FM 12 $ 599 (at a
discount of 40%)

2. Robohelp 11 $ 599 (at a discount of
40%)

Presumably, each license cost above is separate(?) And, there is fine print
that I am not sure how it would be applied: this promotion is "only available
to eligible commercial and volume licensing customers worldwide" and "eligible
retain commercial customers who purchase directly from the Adobe.com Store".

What is the definition of "commercial" in this context? Are free-lance writers
who use FrameMaker and Robohelp not eligible?

For the new subscription model of FM 12, there is no discount:

1. Subscription of FM 12: $29.99 per month.
For perpetual license upgrades to FM, there is no discount:

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Correct. The cost is charged monthly - with an annual commitment. After 30
days, if you cancel, you will be billed 50% of the remaining contract
obligation.

What I meant was that the software checks activation every 30 days ...
presumably, without Internet access, you would have to call every month?

Although the subscription is labeled "monthly", it's really a yearly
subscription. As far as I know you have to pay for an entire year .. that's
just the monthly cost if you break it down that way.

FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Ah! Apparently, activation over the phone may no longer be an option for FM 12
- you have to have an Internet connection. Else you get to return your product
purchase, I suppose.

This is from the FM 12 FAQ:

I didn't know I needed to have an Internet connection when I purchased
FrameMaker 12. Is there a way to activate without having an Internet
connection?<http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/faq.html>
No. Activation of FrameMaker 12 is required via the Internet. Each machine with
an application installed must connect to the Internet at least once within 30
days of the first launch of your serialized product to continue using the
product.

I didn't know I needed to have an Internet connection when I purchased Adobe
FrameMaker 12. What is the return
policy?<http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/faq.html>
For details on Adobe return policies in your region, go to
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/153/tn_15327.html.

Although, they do also say this in the FAQ about calling by an "IT
Administrator" (my bolding below):

Can I choose not to activate Adobe FrameMaker
12?<http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/faq.html>
Activation of Adobe FrameMaker 12 is required via the Internet to continue use
of the product. Activating your product helps protect your computer and your
environment by ensuring that you are using a genuine Adobe product. Activating
your product has other benefits. Visit the activation page [
http://adobe.com/product/activation<http://www.adobe.com/products/activation/>]
for more information. The machine with FrameMaker 12 installed must connect to
the Internet at least once within 30 days of the first launch of your
serialized product or the product stops working. If you work in a company that
has a firewall that prevents your system from connecting to the Internet, have
your IT administrator contact Customer Service. The phone numbers for Customer
Service are available at
www.adobe.com/support/contact<http://www.adobe.com/support/contact>.

Of course, if the IT Administrator has to open a firewall - even if temporarily
- rather than just calling to get activation done, I suspect it will not happen
at some sites.

FrameMaker and SharePoint (user request)

2014-01-15 Thread Bernard Aschwanden (Publishing Smarter)
Hi all:

Quick question. Is anyone on the list using FrameMaker with a SharePoint
implementation and having success with it? I've got a client that is
considering this combination and I wanted to see what your thoughts are.

It would be structured (DITA) with FrameMaker 12 and SharePoint. Ideally
it's someone in the general vicinity of Toronto (Ottawa, Montreal, Boston,
NY) but if you are further out, that's okay. I'd like to get some ideas on
what works (and what might not be working) in your environment.

Please contact me offlist and I can arrange for a followup phone call.

Many thanks,

Bernard

RE: SOLVED!

Besides fixing my file, I learned a
ton!

The problem turned out to be caused by a table whose conditional text settings
were “funny” (Gary’s word). Meaning:

• The table anchor was unconditional.
• Several table rows had a condition applied.
• Some text inside conditional table cells also had the same condition as the
row applied. However, the end-of-flow symbols in some of these dual-condition
cells were unconditional. (Don’t ask why I set the table up this way. It made
sense at the time.)

It seems that Frame didn’t know what to do with an end-of-cell symbol that has
no cell in which to live—as happened when I hid the condition. That’s actually
kind of reasonable, although Frame could handle it more gracefully than
crashing. (Apparently this has been a known bug at least since version 7.
Adobe folks?)

When I cleaned up the table to use conditions only on text (not table rows or
cells), everything worked fine.

Also, thanks to Stuart for pointing me to the MIF Reference. The MIF equivalent
of “don’t Show Condition Indicators” is this line in the Document statement.

Not the most intuitive term for it, but there you have it.

Thanks all!
Anita

Re: FrameMaker 12 released

Really?

Although the subscription is labeled "monthly", it's really a yearly
subscription. As far as I know you have to pay for an entire year ..
that's just the monthly cost if you break it down that way.

price for some customers. Please refer to the product homepages for exact
pricing information (links below).'

1. From FM 11 to FM 12:$ 399

2. From FM 11 to TCS 5: $ 1199

3. From FM 10 to FM 12:$ 599

4. From FM 10 to TCS 5: $ 1199

5. From FM 7.x, 8, 9 to FM 12: $ 999 (no discount from list price)

6. From FM 7.x, 8, 9 to TCS 5: $ 1199

RE: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Ah! Apparently, activation over the phone may no longer be an option for FM 12
- you have to have an Internet connection. Else you get to return your product
purchase, I suppose.

This is from the FM 12 FAQ:

I didn't know I needed to have an Internet connection when I purchased
FrameMaker 12. Is there a way to activate without having an Internet
connection?

What is the return
policy?
For details on Adobe return policies in your region, go to
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/153/tn_15327.html.

Although, they do also say this in the FAQ about calling by an "IT
Administrator" (my bolding below):

Can I choose not to activate Adobe FrameMaker
12?
Activation of Adobe FrameMaker 12 is required via the Internet to continue use
of the product. Activating your product helps protect your computer and your
environment by ensuring that you are using a genuine Adobe product. Activating
your product has other benefits. Visit the activation page [
http://adobe.com/product/activation]
for more information.
Service are available at
www.adobe.com/support/contact.

Bernard

FW: Changing conditional text settings crashes Frame

2014-01-15 Thread Zimmerman, Gary

Hi Anita,

I lurk-and-skim the FM list. Run into this a LOT.

What it means - I think - is that you have something conditionalized "funny".
For example, there is an errant paragraph mark/pilcrow that's hidden normally
but conditionalized. When you turn on or off the conditions in this case, you
might be creating an invalid document or something else FM chokes on. I also
notice it happens a lot when something conditionalized is at the very end of a
file or a structure, so likely some important binary formatting or other info
is being conditionalized in or out, and FM freaks out when it's gone.

Turn on all the text symbols. First skim through to see if there are any
errant para marks or structures (if you're doing structured FM) that are
conditionalized all by themselves. Delete them.

Next try a mif wash - save as .mif, open .mif, then save back to .fm format.
When you are in the .mif file you can turn on all the conditions before you
save as .fm.

Then use the Edit Conditional Text dialog box which (in FM 10, anyway) lists
all the places in the file that share a particular condition. Use the GoTo
button to go to each of them and see what's there.

If there are any unused conditions in the file, use the conditional text dialog
to delete them and delete any text associated with them. (If it's invisible,
you don't care about it, but beware, sometimes this creates a file that Will
Not Open - so make a backup before you try!)

Good luck!

This has been a problem with FM at least since 7, and it still happens to us in
10. I wish they would make the feature more robust.

Subject: Changing conditional text settings crashes Frame

Hi Framers,

Frame 10.0.2.419 / Win 7 Enterprise SP1 / I'm on the digest list so please copy
me on any responses.

I have a file that consistently crashes Frame when I change its conditional
text settings. Here's the sequence. The file uses two conditions, which I'll
call Condition1 and Condition2.

1. Open the file and select Special > Conditional Text > Show/Hide Conditional
Text.
2. Change anything in the window except to hide Condition1.
3. Click Apply. Boom! (Internal error 10024, 5989862, 5990284, 4795407.) This
is very repeatable with this one file. (And yes, I've sent the error log to
the fmerror@ adobe group.)

Of note:

*  If I hide Condition1 (assuming it's showing), I don't get the crash.  All
other changes in the Show/Hide window cause the crash.

* I tried closing the file and clicking it in the context of the book.
Selecting View > Show/Hide Conditional Text and applying changes still causes
the crash.

* I asked a couple of colleagues to test the above steps on their machines and
they also got the crash. (One's on Frame 10.0.0.388, the other same as me,
10.0.2.419.)

* I can change condition settings for other files, including other files in
the same book, through the UI without crashing.

* I can use a FrameScript to set the doc's ShowCondIndicators and
CondFmt.CondFmtIsShown as needed. This is my work-around for the time being.
* I can save the file to MIF, open as text and change to
for my two conditions. When I re-open in Frame, the conditions
are showing, with condition indicators on. (Anyone know the MIF equivalent of
"don't Show Condition Indicators"? I searched for "cond" and "condition" and
didn't find anything recognizable as such.)

Possibly also of note:

* Last week when this started happening, I tried a reboot (in the absence of
other ideas). When my machine came back up, it blue-screened-so there may be a
systemic issue not related to Frame. However since my colleagues were able to
reproduce the problem, environment issues are not the sole cause.

Have any of you seen something similar to this before? Or have any ideas about
how to un-corrupt the file?

Thanks-
Anita

Hi Karen,

you might also try the FM 11-mif format. FM 9 seems to open these files,
and probably thus the font information will be correct.

(In any case, FM 9 should be patched to its last version, as the support
for the FM 7.2 "not Unicode" characters was added very late.)

Why this once worked but not now... I have no idea.

Re: Changing conditional text settings crashes Frame

2014-01-15 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Anita

We also had crashes when changing CT show/hide settings in FM10. I
reported it very thoroughly to Adobe and they confirmed there was a bug.
As far as I can tell, it's fixed in FM11.

Two workarounds:
- we didn't see the crash if we saved the file immediately before
changing the CT show/hide settings
- it didn't crash if we imported CT settings from a file

We ended up using framescript to create menu items for changing the CT
settings, where the script imports the settings from a file.

Cheers
Rebecca

1. Open the file and select Special > Conditional Text > Show/Hide
Conditional Text.
2. Change anything in the window except to hide Condition1.
3. Click Apply. Boom! (Internal error 10024, 5989862, 5990284,
4795407.) This is very repeatable with this one file. (And yes, I’ve
sent the error log to the fmerror@ adobe group.)

Of note:

• If I hide Condition1 (assuming it’s showing), I don’t get the crash.
All other changes in the Show/Hide window cause the crash.

• I tried closing the file and clicking it in the context of the book.
Selecting View > Show/Hide Conditional Text and applying changes still
causes the crash.

• I asked a couple of colleagues to test the above steps on their
machines and they also got the crash. (One’s on Frame 10.0.0.388, the
other same as me, 10.0.2.419.)

• I can change condition settings for other files, including other
files in the same book, through the UI without crashing.

• I can use a FrameScript to set the doc’s ShowCondIndicators and
CondFmt.CondFmtIsShown as needed. This is my work-around for the time
being.
• I can save the file to MIF, open as text and change
to for my two conditions. When I re-open in Frame, the
conditions are showing, with condition indicators on. (Anyone know the
MIF equivalent of “don’t Show Condition Indicators”? I searched for
“cond” and “condition” and didn’t find anything recognizable as
such.)

Possibly also of note:

• Last week when this started happening, I tried a reboot (in the
absence of other ideas). When my machine came back up, it
blue-screened—so there may be a systemic issue not related to Frame.
However since my colleagues were able to reproduce the problem,
environment issues are not the sole cause.

Have any of you seen something similar to this before? Or have any
ideas about how to un-corrupt the file?

Thanks—
Anita

RE: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Keith Soltys
From a scan of their product pages and the few reviews out now, this looks like
a compelling upgrade. I passed on FM 11 because most of the new features seemed
oriented to structured authoring. This release has the number one item on my
list of requested feature enhancements - regular expressions in search. That
alone would be worth the upgrade to me.

The improved conditional text pod, smart catalogs, and other GUI enhancements
are also good.

I would like to know if they've improved the MS Word import. I didn't see any
mention of that anywhere.

Regards
Keith

TCS5 doesn't have Illustrator

2014-01-15 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

The new FM12 features sound great but I must admit I'm horrified to hear that
TCS5 doesn't have Illustrator. My team's got the subscription version of TCS4.
Does anyone know if we can separately upgrade FM, or do we have to upgrade the
whole suite to TCS5? I assume if we upgrade the whole suite we'd lose our
rights to Illustrator?

We bought TCS subscription specifically so we could get upgrades to FM *and*
Illustrator. I feel like Adobe have signed us up to a one-year contract and
then pulled the rug out from under us!

I'd appreciate any info anyone happens to have.

Thanks,
Rebecca

RE: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Dr. Reng,

Thank you for bringing our product launch to the group's attention. Both the
product manager, Kapil Verma, and I have submitted product announcements and
webinar details to the list, but it appears that they aren't visible yet. (I am
awaiting my confirmation email.)

For those who would like information on the 40% off promotion for FrameMaker 9
users, you may get full details at this website:
http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/promotions.html
Please note that you can only take advantage of the 40% promotion from the
webpage listed above.

Another alternative that may alleviate any frustrations with upgrade costs is
to migrate to a FrameMaker 12 subscription. Although you commit to one year
with this subscription, the monthly rate is only $29. Any updates (including
major releases) automatically become available to you during your active
subscription. In the long run, this is possibly the most economical choice. By
the way, you may recall that with the last release (FrameMaker 11), only Tech
Comm Suite 4 was available for subscription; not the point products.

I don't know if there has been discussion about FrameMaker XML Author 12 yet.
This is a new product: a fully functional, end-to-end XML authoring solution
that is fully compliant with DITA OT. It costs 40% of the price for a full
perpetual FrameMaker 12 license and is only $19.99 per month for a year's
subscription. Find out more at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemakerxmlauthor.html

For those of you not yet familiar with the new product features, here are 3 new
AdobeTV channels that give quick, mini video demos, and will quickly let you
know about just a few of the areas with major improvements:

FrameMaker 12 Features: http://tv.adobe.com/show/framemaker-12-features
FrameMaker XML Author 12 Features:
http://tv.adobe.com/show/framemaker-xml-author-12
FrameMaker Publishing Server 12 Features:
http://tv.adobe.com/show/framemaker-publishing-server-12

Enjoy!

Z
