RE: CMYK vs RGB RE: PDF query
Well Adobe's other software (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and even Microsoft's Office suite seems to find it a lot less complex than FrameMaker does A screen-shot in a technical manual does come from an RGB colour space. Likewise, a photograph taken with a digital camera is natively an RGB thing. If they ever gets printed on paper on colour, then CMYK inks will be used to print it (there are no RGB inks!) What's supposed to happen is that they can be included in your PDF output as RGB items, tagged with their respective colour profiles (sRGB for a screenshot, or something more fancy if the camera's manufacturer supplies their own profile), and the PDF is output-device-independent. So if you view the PDF on screen, the OS and display driver take account of the monitor's declared output capabilities, and render the RGB items appropriately; Conversely, if you're printing the PDF on paper, the OS and printer driver connive between themselves to choose appropriate CYMK values to render the RGB items on the page. Trying to convert to CMYK up front in FrameMaker and thus pre-empt the printer's capabilities is a mug's game (and vice versa if you have natively CMYK or Pantone material in your PDF). From: Craig Ede [mailto:craig...@hotmail.com] Sent: 22 October 2014 15:35 To: Davis, David; framers Subject: RE: CMYK vs RGB RE: PDF query Yes, I think color conversions are that complex. RGB was designed for monitors allowing a broad range of additive colors in the form of light (i.e. lit pixels). CMYK was designed for subtractive printing to paper offering a restricted range of those colors; many of the RGB colors being out of gamut for CMYK, meaning there is no formula to convert them. Nobody serious is printing high-quality hardcopy using R, G, and B inks. And I'm not sure why one would want to use CMYK to print to the screen. Re: Frame 9 Crashing - Can't Create PDFs
I don’t think FrameMaker dictionary has any influence on acrobat processing. dict refers to the postscript dictionary. xshow often relates to a font issue. Re-installing acrobat, actually the pdf printer driver, may help. Or check the settings in the acrobat distiller program (font locations, font settings). Is the pdf printer your default printer when saving to PDF? Try printing another document, does that give the same error? On Book Update, FM 12 deleting networked files created in FM 9
Hi, This FM 12 problem is explained clearly by a posting by Veronica Kutt of Front Runner Training (I have the identical problem of files being deleted on book update, still occurs with latest patch): FrameMaker 12 seems to be deleting files from their network drive during the Update Book function, not just the file itself, but the backup version too. FrameMaker 10 files had been opened and re-saved as FrameMaker 12. Then, in a subsequent update of the book file, FM reported that it could not find a certain file, and the icon for that file in the book file turned into a question mark. On inspection of the folder that should contain the file, the file was gone, as was the .backup.fm version of the file. It is my assumption that this problem occurred during a book update, although it is remotely possible that the problem occurred while saving the files from Frame 10 to Frame 12. Have you seen this? Problem with auto numbering Figures and Tables
Esteemed colleagues, I am running Frame 11.0.2.384 on Windows 7 Professional. I have a book with 5 chapters that contain figures and/or tables. The book pages are numbered consecutively from 1 to 60+. Since I am not using folio page numbering, I want the Figures and Tables to be numbered consecutively as they appear in the book. I cannot get the numbering to work. It resets to zero in each chapter. I have created books like this before with no problems. This book is a problem child. I assume that there is some hidden misstep but I am at a loss. Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. I have seen this with earlier versions of FM, and it is not FMs fault, but Microsofts. With Windows 7, they changed how handshaking is done between computers. I will send you offlist the remedy. RE: Problem with auto numbering Figures and Tables
Pardon my asking some questions that you may already have looked at: 1. Did you mean that you want the figure number to depend the previous figure number _and_ previous table number (and vice versa)? I am not sure how that works. If independent, meaning Figure X is followed by Figure X+1, regardless of any intervening tables, then as I understand, each type of item (i.e. table and figure) has its independent counter ... so the table counter paragraph number will be taken from the previous table, for example. As long as the following is true: 2. Have you verified that _each_ chapter file (I am assuming it is a separate .fm file) has its File-Numbering-Paragraph check-box value set to Continue Numbering From Previous Paragraph In Book? I am not sure if the above is the specific cause of the problem you have though. RE: Adobe customer support - problem solved.
I had a direct call from TCSSUP, and a wonderful CSR understood the problem and within 30 minutes today, had the issue resolved for my client. So, what was a useless and frustrating 8 hours for my client yesterday was resolved the way it should have been the first time today in 30 minutes, so my contact for my client is happy and appreciative. He was just flabbergasted at the landmine of Adobe Support, and it was especially eye-opening for him as he is a Sr. Support Specialist himself. I am appreciative, also, of the issue finally being resolved, but why does it have to be so difficult and take so many tries with Adobe? (and the number of offlist responses that I received to my squeaky wheel email yesterday was unreal . . . misery really does love company in this case.) Thanks to this list for being available and allowing us to use it for so many purposes, including getting the attention of Adobe support. Adobe customer support is back up to its shenanigans. Anyone from Adobe monitoring this list??? If anyone at Adobe is monitoring this list and reads this email, customer support would be sincerely appreciated. My client purchased a retail license for Framemaker 10. After the purchase, and installation, my client set up an Adobe account with an email and a password. My client attempted to use this email and password to access their Adobe account today. The email was from the business email of the VP of Software Development that is no longer at the company. When my client entered this email and password, a dialog opened stating that because of security issues, that a new password had to be created for the account and that an automatic email with a temporary password with the proper instructions was being sent to the email address on file for the account. Well, this obviously won't work as this email is for a person who no longer works at the company. It's now an invalid email. I got on the phone with Adobe support and Ashish stated that all I had to do was have an email sent that came from my client's address (i.e., usern...@clientcompany.com) that requested a reset of the email address for the account. We did that. Well, come to find out, now Adobe is digging in its heels saying that my client has to fill out a License Transfer form that asks for all this crap that such as the End-User ID, etc. Say what? We are NOT transferring the friggin' license. We are just trying to reset the email address for a valid account. The friggin' license is staying with the company. The company purchased the license, not the VP of Software. And Adobe is saying that this the one and only shot that we get at this, otherwise, they license becomes invalid . . . Again, my client purchased the perpetual license and it is still valid. We just need to change the email address on the account. Any advice from anyone on this list? I swear to G_D that Adobe Customer Support is an oxymoron and exists only to hassle, harangue and just plain hack off its customer base. I have a long time client that I got set up with Adobe Framemaker. Long time client went through a major reorganization and tons of layoffs since March of this year. My contact there, the long time VP of SW Development, was one of the folks who got the ax. This VP had purchased a retail license for FM, and had set up the Adobe account with his credentials (email and password). When he got the ax, all the information about the purchase (serial number, Adobe account information, etc.) was never kept track of, and the two machines on which he had installed FM got wiped BEFORE deactivating FM. Yea, right. Well, long time client wanted to get set back up again with FM, get an account reactivated, get the activation back for FM. . . and being Adobe novices, it was a landmine for them. They didn't even know where to begin and reached out to me. Well, I haven't had to deal with Adobe support in a while (knock on wood) and I quickly found out that the rules for phone support have changed . . . even the phone number that was readily available for installation and activation questions is no longer available after 90 days from installation and you are forced to chat.
Re: Adobe customer support - problem solved.
To avoid problems like that, companies should keep central records of all software licenses, make sure that the software is licensed to the company, not to an individual employee, and verify that the contact information is not a personal email that might be deleted if the person who registered the software leaves the company. At my last job I had a file with license information that was very helpful on a few occasions when Adobe mistakenly believed that products were out of support. Automated cross-reference format content (for reference to tables in paragraphs)
Hi, all. I was wondering if there is a way to achieve something, but I am not seeing a good (and ideally simple) way to do so. Essentially, within a body paragraph, I want to be able to say (in the middle of other text, of course): -' ... Table XX, Title of Table, ... ' when the paragraph and the table caption are on the same page, -' ... Table XX, Title of Table on Page YY, ... ' when the paragraph and the table caption are on different pages. I already have two cross-reference formats that I use for this purpose, but it is not automated. Meaning that if the paragraph and caption start out on the same page, I use the first format and the second format when they are on different pages. But, as I add and remove and delete and edit text - all normal work - in other locations of the document (typically before this reference, of course), the paragraph and caption could get separated onto different pages. And, then I have to go and find the cross-reference and switch it to the other format manually. In a long document, this is also prone to error. I have tried using only the second format exclusively, but it looks quite silly to refer to the page when the table title is right there on the same page! :( I have also tried the above and below constructs for the format, but don't like them as much - they are not useful (for similar look silly reasons) when the table caption and paragraph slide onto different pages. Because, I feel that above and below ought to refer to material on the same physical page. So, I'd love to have a way to automate this as I edit document, meaning that the format should added the on Page YY automatically if and only if they reference and the table are on different pages. All on the fly, so that I don't have to think about it! :) Any thoughts? Z P.S. Conceptually, I am also looking for another similar thing ... for adding This Page is Intentionally Blank when there is nothing on it ... but that is less critical. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Automated cross-reference format content (for reference to tables in paragraphs)
Hi Z, This could certainly be done with a script (ExtendScript for FrameMaker 10 and higher; FrameScript for all versions). You could run the script manually at the end of your editing process, or you could have it run automatically when you open or print a document, similar to when cross-references are automatically updated. Or, it could be run automatically on save. If you want to pursue this further, please send me a sample document and I will tell you what is possible and a cost. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much.
