Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
Fundamentally, unstructured FrameMaker has changed very little. I've
opened FM6 in recent versions and had zero problems. New features have
been added but old things all work pretty much the same.

FM8 switched to Unicode. Anything using the old Zapf Dingbats that was
bundled with FM will need to be redone. Any other symbol or dingbat
font may need cleanup.

FM9 introduced a new UI layered on the old one (when you drill down,
you may still see dialogs unchanged from FM5), which broke a lot of
keyboard shortcuts, many of which they never fixed. If you're used to
driving everything from the keyboard and never touching the mouse,
you'll probably hate it and have a bad month or two getting used to
constantly using the mouse.

FM12 added the core features from RoboHelp (look for multi-channel
publishing in the docs), so you probably won't need to upgrade
ePublisher or buy RoboHelp.

Looking for examples of good landscape oriented user manuals

2015-05-12 Thread tom . beiswenger
I am working on a project to document a new machine that has a Windows 8.x
based user interface. All touch screen, swipe left-right...

Our current manuals have a pretty restrictive template in portrait
orientation; however, considering that the layout of all of the screens is
very horizontal, I'm thinking that a manual in landscape format (probably
spiral bound on the left when printed) might be a good way to present
instructions that would include lots of graphics and probably embedded
video (which I've done quite successfully in FM12).

Any ideas where I might find some good examples of user manuals done in
landscape, as well as supporting templates?

RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Craig Ede
upgrade to from FM7.x to FM12 $800upgrade from FM 7.x to Technical
Communications Suite $1200
For the extra $400 you get full Acrobat XI and not just the headless distiller
FrameMaker uses when you buy it alone. That's worth $400 to me.Besides that you
get RoboHelp 11, Captivate 8, and Presenter 10 as well and can play around with
the Help options offered by RoboHelp.
Opening older FM files does not require MIF save. Just open them and resave. I
do it all the time with FM5.0 files and up. Copy your older files to new
directories so that you still have them in case you think something went amiss.
The UNICODE stuff is only a problem when backsaving to versions before 8 or 7.2
which I don't recommend.
As someone else said, the retooling of ZapfDingbats (in bullets, etc.) and
Symbol font usage is perhaps the biggest issue. Usually you can pick a glyph
from you normal font(s) to replace these special use fonts since the modern
versions of the fonts have many more glyphs. If you have the Symbol font, you
don't have to replace Symbols with the simpler same font glyph unless you
want to.
Good luck,
Craig ___

RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Keith Soltys
It's been so long since I have been using Frame 7.2 that it's hard to comment
about a learning curve. Certainly, some of the basic stuff hasn't changed much
(sigh) but there have been a lot of interface changes and some usability
improvements.

I think you will have to convert to MIF. You may want to get a copy of MIF2GO,
which is now open source and free. That will speed up the process.

I'd stick with WebWorks. It's fast and stable and you're familiar with the
workflow. You have some template rebuilding to do, but it would be easier than
trying to learn RoboHelp. (The publishing features in Frame 12 are fairly basic
and you will need RoboHelp to do any serious customization).

Regards
Keith

RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
You can now create all those from FM12 directly; however, the learning curve
will be a bit of a shock - the UI changed completely starting in FM9. I think
at 7.2 you're over the Unicode barrier already so fonts may or may not be an
issue. Some finer control over the publishing (generating) of help outputs can
be done using the Tech Comm Suite (which includes RH, FM, Acrobat Pro
Captivate), but may not be necessary in your case. Personally, I'd download a
trial copy of TCS5 and try it out on a non-production machine with copies of
your FM7.2 content play around with it for the 30 days of the trial.

Can you keep everything about your existing template except orientation?
Just change your mater page orientation landscape, It might be easier to
get it through approval rather than creating a whole new templayt/style
structiure.

You might have to tweek any tyles that are based on absolute placement, but
I know speaking for myself, it would take all of an hour to reorirntate my

Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread tom . beiswenger
Hi Caroline,

I recently did this same upgrade (going from FM 7 to FM12). The learning
curve was not bad. Mostly, it's getting used to a totally new (and way
better, in my opinion) user interface. I recommend taking the FrameMaker
10 essentials course that is in Lynda.com. Adobe changed the UI at ver.
10, so virtually everything that is in that class applies to FM12.

File conversion, so far, has been pretty clean. I've had only minor
problems, I have a set of templates that I use for various parts of our
manuals (Title pages, TOC, Preface, Chapter files, and Appendices. Each of
these templates has a number of paragraph and character formats that are
unique to them. Once I was up to speed on FM12 (about a week, I think), I
converted the FM7 templates to FM12 (start by opening the files in FM12
and allowing FM12 to make them FM12 docs). Then, I went through my
paragraph and character format catalogs and modified the tags, as
necessary.

From this point on, when I open a manual that was created in FM7, I first
open the book file, then open each doc in the book file, save it (as
FM12), then close it. Then I open my templates and import the formats
(usually just paragraph and character) as appropriate. I then save the
book (as FM12) and I'm ready to work! I have some manuals that are 600+
pages and the whole process for them took maybe an hour or less.

Good luck!

Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version

2015-05-12 Thread Caroline Tabach

Hi,

At the moment we are using FrameMaker 7.2 and ePublisher Pro version 9.2 to
create PDF files, and a collections of help files which are mostly html,  with
2 or 3 .chm files

The applications mostly run on Internet Explorer (and the .chm files are for
the 2 that are not over IE).

I would like to upgrade our applications as they do not really run on my
current operating system and because I want to also produce more modern output.

I need to make PDF, ePub, Responsive html and .chm.

What do you all recommend?
Is FrameMaker 12 enough to use stand alone?

Do I need ePublisher Pro or RoboHelp?

How would I go about importing my Frame 7.2 files into Frame 12.
Does it support them or would I need to save as MIF and then open the MIF files.
I have quite a lot of user guides.

To what extent will FrameMaker let me change the design?

What is the learning curve from 7.2 to 12?

thanks

2015-05-12 Thread tom . beiswenger
That's exactly how I did it (full jump from FM7 to 12). I also took the FM
essentials course in Lynda.com, which covered all of the new stuff with
the UI.

You can now create all those from FM12 directly; however, the learning
curve will be a bit of a shock - the UI changed completely starting in
FM9. I think at 7.2 you're over the Unicode barrier already so fonts may
or may not be an issue. Some finer control over the publishing
(generating) of help outputs can be done using the Tech Comm Suite (which
includes RH, FM, Acrobat Pro Captivate), but may not be necessary in
your case. Personally, I'd download a trial copy of TCS5 and try it out on
a non-production machine with copies of your FM7.2 content play around
with it for the 30 days of the trial.
