Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore colour and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-18 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear friends,
Looking into the blue sky in Central Switzerland I realised that we (including
me)
are anticipating the change of the rotating direction of the earth.

IMHO the first obstacle for a simple handling of the size/colour-issue of icons
is
the distribution of the icons in various dlls: Most are in fmcustom.dll,
fmdlg.dll,
fmres.dll and owlres.dll - but many are also found together with their function
code,
for example in docbook.dll, mmFilter.dll etc.)

If all icons would be concentrated in one dll, let's say named fmIcons_sscc.dll
with
ss indicating the size and cc indicating colour/mono, then it would be possible
to
map them simply into the standard fmIcons - even during the running FM session.

And if all the language dependent things (dialogues, but in particular the
strings
for the dialogues) would be stored in an analogous manner then it would become
possible to switch UI language on the fly (as Dieter Gust from itl - and other
consultants - request since years).
But I see that this will stay a whish for eternity: The situation is the same
as with
the icons: Most (old) dialogues are with their strings in fmdlg.dll etc., but
much
function code is also accompanied by language dependent strings (e.g.
docbook.dll,
find_references.dll, flashfilter.dll).

I see that the whole issue would result in a complete re-design of the
application -
as others have mentioned and even requested. IMHO only the switch to Unicode
was of
comparable complexity - and of course of much greater prestige than 'just
adapting
the UI'.

The capability to switch language I have implemented in my ExtendScript
project:
Initially the langue is determined from the FM-installation (app.Language) and
the
appropriate strings are mapped/copied into the standard object:
CloneObject (goTxt, goTxt_de); // map German
During the session this mapping can be changed. I have used this mechanism to
check
my translations (nearly 300 strings) and space requirements for en/de/fr.
There is a drop-down-list on a tab in a panel to select the language. At the
next
invocation of a panel it uses the appropriate strings (variable items are
indicated
by %nn). For the menu I have not figured out how to change it during the
session - It
needs to be rebuilt which normally is done on invocation of the script.

No, attachments are VERY discouraged on this listserv. Too much
chance for viruses and other bad things. So either post a link to
where files reside or, as in the case of Lin's and Bodvar's examples,
I will host them on FrameUsers.com.

Re: [Framers] Anyone have any spiffy FM resume templates?

2017-03-18 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Would you like to look at my version (FM10)? I got the idea from some FM
template and remodeled the document (not as template, though).
http://bodvar.is/Files/ResumeBB201311.pdf
http://bodvar.is/Files/ResumeBB201311.fm
It is in Icelandic. If anyone is interested but unsure how to use it I can
translate the basics.

Hope it helps.

Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore color and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-18 Thread Stefan Gentz
ics. Done in the 2017 release. Others wanted to get several dialogs
resizable. Done in the 2017 release. Others wanted to get the spelling checkers
better and behave differently (not so “over-aggressive”). We updated them to
the latest engines available on the market in the 2017 release and changed the
behavior to match the writing process better. Others wanted to get a better
overview in the conditional tags pod by seeing the colors of the conditions.
Done in the 2017 release. Others wanted to get text tabs back in the designer
pods and get rid of the icons. Done in the 2017 release. Others asked us to
finally get rid of the old, wired console window and make it a pod. Guess what?
Done in the 2017 release. Others strongly requested to make dynamic content
feature available for DITA based in attributes. Done in the 2017 release.
Several DITA authors asked us to show the current element position in bread
crump like path. Done in the 2017 release. Others complained about several
issues when authoring DITA (like the behavior when you click return in a list
item). Done in the 2017 release. Others wanted to make us the HTML5 output
Section 508 compliant. Done in the 2017 release. Or improve the way CSS are
generated and managed. Done in the 2017 release. Others demanded support for
high-dpi screens. Done in the 2017 release. Others wanted to have the setting
for borders and text symbols a “global” setting and finally no longer a “by
document” setting. Done in the 2017 release. And so on. In total there are over
1,300 smaller and bigger changes in FrameMaker 2017 and most of them are based
on feedback from the users.

In the 2015 and 2017 releases a huge amount of work went into the core of the
product. In Fm 2017 the font engine was completely reengineered (to make
FrameMaker compatible with RTL languages (like Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew) and
complex script languages (ike Thai). Today you can author virtually all
languages in the world with FrameMaker. In the 2017 release a huge part of
FrameMaker was reengineered to make FrameMaker’s user interface technology fit
for the future. Beside this a lot of ground work in the code was done to set
the foundation for future developments.
Most of this is not visible to the end-user, but it was necessary ground work
in the background that had to be done. In many aspects FrameMaker 2017 is a
much more modern product today “under the hood” and in many aspects the
foundation is set for the future. It might not be “visible”, but we had to do
this and you can be sure, that we will continue to make FrameMaker the best
tool for technical writers.

Oh yes! Believe me, everyone in the Adobe TechComm team would love to get a
bigger budget. And we’re fighting for it everyday competing with other business
units ☺

But to be realistic … just look at every normal company. I guess more or less
all of you have made this experience: How big is the budget of the marketing
department? And how small is the budget of the tech comm department? Right. And
guess what? Adobe has excellent tools for creatives and marketing … and
excellent tools for TechComm. I guess you get the idea ☺
