Re: [Framers] Big thumbs up for Rick Quatro's latest script

2017-05-16 Thread Tammy Van Boening
I second the motion that this is an awesome script. Webworks totally barfs on
spaces in file names and this made a HUGE difference to me when single sourcing
FM to Webworks output and I had either inherited files or had gotten slopping
in my own file naming.

I have no financial stake in this script. I am just another very
satisfied customer.

It's not entirely correct that Microsoft stopped issuing security patches for
Windows XP three years ago. That's when extended support officially ended, but
there have been at least two critical security updates released since then --
one in the first year after the official end of support, and one in the last
week to address the WannaCry/WannaCrypt ransomware attack.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-16 Thread Schmidt, Tom
I have same problem and here's the best fix I've found...

1. Go to the Task Manager
2. Click the Processes tab
3. Find DWM.exe, and end task on that file. (Might have to end task on it
twice, but rarely.)

FM recovers without having to close program.

I blush to admit that I am still using FM 7. I used it professionally for a
long time, and produced many technical and academic texts with it, despite the
hassles of getting colleagues to deal with PDF commenting; but as a retired
person I don't need and can't justify any upgrade.
Anyway, the point is that only under Win 10 (which I hate for many other
reasons) do I have this problem: if I hold down the left mouse button for
anything that FM apparently considers "too long", FM freezes. I'm trying to
train myself to use the cursor keys more than I used to, but it's still a pain.

I don't expect Adobe to produce a fix for FM 7, but it would be interesting to
see where the problem is coming from.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-16 Thread Bernard Aschwanden (Publishing Smarter)
To add to my initial "upgrade" I will say that the click/drag bug was there
in some way in many versions. I would select a text frame, resize... crash.
I'd hold the button down, say a prayer, hope for the best... crash.

I found workarounds, but it just was a headache to do it every time. When it
crashed I was upset (see, nice and polite word) and expressed it (with words
that were NOT as nice and polite), and loved it when the bugs got fixed. I
have some clients still on versions 5 or 6 (and 7, 8, etc) but upgrading is
pretty simple in most cases, and the value in some incremental stuff may not
be there (some people stay with version X since version X+1 had minor
changes). However, jumping from a single digit version (7, 8, 9) to 2017 is
a major change.

If you do it, prepare to be frustrated by things moving on menus, but the
majority of the functions are still there. With 2017 there is enough (press
F7 almost anywhere to get a contextual menu of 'things you can do') that
makes it a major update, plus the first full quarterly patch is out so
initial bugs are resolved. Sure, there are still some things to deal with,
but it is a lot smoother than previous versions. Sounds weird to describe it
as such, but that's the best I have early in the day.

You can always download the trial, test it, and then decide. Like any new
product there will be the times you say "where is THAT thing I want", but it
is pretty sweet once it's running. Plus, if it does NOT do what you want,
just go back to the previous. As always, back up files before doing work,
and track what you do to ensure you can re-do it if you really need it in an
older version. Plus, there is always MIF.

Mileage will vary, but do consider the work to maintain a VM (I run a few of
them myself) as well as older software and the lack of support for them
after 5 or 10+ years of development into newer products.

Hope that helps a bit.

Bernard

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-16 Thread Frank Stearns

Older versions of FM sometimes seem unhappy running directly in a
newer OS.

Try VirtualBox from Oracle. It's free; you can set up a virtual XP
environment under Win 7 or Win 10, install FM in that XP world, and
away you go, often faster and without those quirks compared to
running the older FM natively. (I've found the emulator offering from
Microsoft to be lacking and unreliable. What a surprise.)

With a few configuration tweaks, the virtual environment can r/w
"real" disk locations outside the environment, you can copy and paste
(control-C/V) to and from apps inside and outside the virtual
environment, and you can send/receive from your USB devices, such as
printers, keyboards, mice.

Two caveats: You'll need original XP disks to do the install; and so
far there is no support for firewire devices.

Overall a headache saver and in our case, we have a 25 year-old custom
database that's impossible to run in Win7 but works just fine in
Virtualbox. A HUGE time saver and business saver, actually -- we were
unable to rewrite that db for a newer OS. And oh, btw, FM7.x runs
nicely in that environment as well. :)

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-16 Thread Michael Lewis
I blush to admit that I am still using FM 7. I used it professionally
for a long time, and produced many technical and academic texts with it,
despite the hassles of getting colleagues to deal with PDF commenting;
but as a retired person I don't need and can't justify any upgrade.
Anyway, the point is that only under Win 10 (which I hate for many other
reasons) do I have this problem: if I hold down the left mouse button
for anything that FM apparently considers "too long", FM freezes. I'm
trying to train myself to use the cursor keys more than I used to, but
it's still a pain.

I don't expect Adobe to produce a fix for FM 7, but it would be
interesting to see where the problem is coming from.

Now that you mention it, in my previous encounters with FrameMaker 7.2, I
was using a 32-bit Windows XP/SP3 PC. It would be relatively easy to move
this project to a PC that I have sitting around here. Is that likely to
solve the problem and make life a whole lot easier?

I don't recall encountering this issue is my previous applications.
