Re: [Framers] Crash with Internal Errors: 13054, 21985197, 21967009, 21686210

2017-05-18 Thread Lin Sims
Corporate standard (and, I think, our CMS) requires use of SVGs, partially
because it lets people search for text in the graphic once the PDF is
created. Those of us not working in DITA embed graphics because (again)
it's a corporate standard based on the fact that we don't share files
across servers/directories, so referring to them is a non-starter.

Alison, that sounds like it's a "might work". I'll have to explore that.
Thanks!

And I just realized I forgot to provide what may be a very pertinent piece
of info. The crash ONLY happens when I'm saving the file as part of a "Save
all Files in Book" operation. None of the other files trigger this, and a
couple are even larger. One of my "workarounds" is to save the other files
first and then save the problem file. That will often work for a bit, but
it's a PITA not being able to use the book-based save all.

Just to mention a possibility ... FrameMaker is rather intolerant of
network latency. If you are saving to any sort of networked drive (even
a Dropbox folder), try saving to a local drive.

I've had more than one client drastically reduce random FrameMaker
crashes by moving from network to local file storage.

[Framers] ANN: Impromptu Anti-Webinar: Using FrameSLT to Cleanup Structured Docs

2017-05-18 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Framers,

If you are using conversion tables to convert unstructured FrameMaker
documents to structured FrameMaker, you know that conversion tables only get
you part of the way to valid XML. Cleaning up the last 10-20% can be slow
and tedious. Enter FrameSLT, Russ Ward's ingenious FrameMaker plugin that
uses XPath and a simple, but powerful scripting language that can help
automate the cleanup of structured documents.

I am going to host a short webinar to introduce FrameSLT and how I used it
to solve a simple structured cleanup problem for a client. The webinar will
be at 2:00 pm EDT this afternoon. Please email me if you want to attend and
I will send you an invitation.

Remember, an anti-webinar means no sponsors, no boring slides, or
promotional fluff, just simple demonstrations from the trenches. Email me as
soon as possible and I will send you an invite.

[Framers] Is anyone using Documentum (or any other CMS) to share content between FM and Word?

Content would, ideally, be unformatted so local formatting could be applied.

If so, any thoughts, tips, tricks, traps?

It happens on both, actually. The last 6 months or so I've been working on
my local drive because the network drive server is now remote instead of
on-site and the lag was really annoying. At least it wasn't bouncing.

Re: [Framers] Custom graphic as bullet

2017-05-18 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Gillian,

You cannot use a graphic in the automatic numbering of your
list paragraph format. Pitty.
However, there are two other options:

o As others have suggested: Create a special list font with only a single
character
at the position of e.g. "n".
This character should be your custom bullet.
Then create a character format with this font.
In your list paragraph format use n as your Autonumber and set your character
  format.

o On the reference pages create a graphic frame with your bullet.
On the body pages create a paragraph format, e.g. bullet which uses this
graphic frame
  as frame above.
Set the Space below to e.g. -30 pt.
Set the Next Pgf Tag to your list paragraph.
In the list paragraph format set the space above to the same negative value,
e.g. -30 pt.
Give it a left indent, so that it starts at the right of the bullet.
Now your second paragraph is pulled up to be to the right of the bullet
paragraph.
You will have to play with the space above/below values to get the two
paragraphs aligned.
And when you enter text in the list paragraph the text will be invisible
first.
The text will be printed or saved to PDF without any problem.
To get it displayed on your monitor you must press CTRL+L.

Best regards

Winfried

Subject: Re: [Framers] Custom graphic as bullet

Hi Gillian,

I don't have Frame available, so if I remember correctly (fingers crossed),
here's how you can make a custom bullet:

Draw a Graphic Frame on the Reference Pages and if the art file size is small
enough, I'd copy, not reference it into the frame. Name the Graphic Frame, for
example, Custom Bullet.

Now here's the part I can't quite remember: in the Para Designer, I *think*
your new Graphic Frame, Custom Bullet, will be in the Building Block list.
Bring up the current bullet paragraph format, delete the bullet Building Block
and put Custom Bullet in its place. Be sure to click on it from the Building
Block list, don't type it in.

If you know they will never want the old bullet, you can do an Update All and
not keep any overrides. If you're not sure, you can create a new para format
with the Custom Bullet, and retag paragraphs as needed.

Then you'll have to play around with the placement/size of the art in the
Graphic Frame, and tabs.

Hope this helps -

Louise

Frame Gurus!

TCS 2017

Our marketing department wants us to use a customized bullet. It's more of a
graphic, because it's not in the character palette. They use InDesign so they
inserted it as a graphic. They want us to use it as a bullet in all of our
bullet lists.

So how do I make a customized bullet list with a customzed graphic? The
Character Designer does not allow for inserting a graphic to create a bullet.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
