Re: [Framers] Graphics quality

What format image and which version of FrameMaker?

If you're displaying EPS, you're not looking at the same image.
FrameMaker's showing a preview bitmap stored in the EPS file and PDF
is rendering the actual vectors.

Re: [Framers] Graphics quality

2018-09-28 Thread Doug
I'm comparing how an image looks on the same monitor when displayed by
Frame and in PDF produced from Frame. In all cases the image looks better
when displayed in PDF. It doesn't matter what quality the image is; Frame
just seems to display images poorly in comparison.

Re: [Framers] Graphics quality

Rather than "set your desktop resolution to the highest it can
support" I'd say set your display to its native resolution.

I don't believe LCD ClearType / font-smoothing settings have any
effect on what's captured.

To me, the most important tips are (1) selecting or cropping to show
only pertinent screen elements and (2) resampling only when it's
absolutely unavoidable.

Re: [Framers] HTML

Save as HTML was never good for much. With FrameMaker 6 through 11, if
you wanted professional-looking HTML output, you used WebWorks,
RoboHelp, or MIF2Go.

>From FrameMaker 12 on, you can use the built-in subset of RoboHelp
features ("multichannel publishing"), though WebWorks ePublisher has
some advantages.

Not always for better performance, sometimes just because FrameMaker
can't render the format on screen.

E.g. for EPS vector graphics FrameMaker uses the embedded preview bitmap.

Let me see if I'm doing this right!

The 'Save As HTML' is somewhat deprecated and clunky. It has some uses,
but it is not able to produce a slick output. Trying the options in the
Publish pod is a better bet.

Re: [Framers] HTML

2018-09-28 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Doug

I've generated this webhelp from unstructured FrameMaker:

www.flowtime.be/samples/enfocus_pitstop_webhelp/Multivolume/Output/wwhelp.htm

Generated with WebWorks ePublisher.

I don't know which version of FrameMaker you're using, but the latest
versions have their own built-in (RoboHelp-based) publishing feature. Just
choose File > Publish and select your preferred format, for example
responsive HTML5.

Kind regards

Yves

[Framers] HTML

2018-09-28 Thread Doug
I've been making PDFs using Frame unstructured, but now I'm facing the
challenge of adding HTML output to my list of tasks. I'm familiar with
HTML, but making it from Frame is something I've not done before.

Can someone point me to online examples of user guides that have been
converted to HTML? I'd like to get an idea of what's possible making HTML
from Frame.

Thanks,

Re: [Framers] Print to PDF w/ FM12 and Windows 10

2018-09-28 Thread Lin Sims
FYI, I'm unsure if this is actually a FrameMaker problem or a problem with
how Visio saves out to SVG or a problem with the Windows 10 OS.

Our workflow is:

1. Paste a JPG into Visio
2. Add some text
3. Save the result out to SVG
4. Import into FrameMaker
5. Save as PDF (or Print with Adobe PDF as the printer)

If we do this on a Windows 7 machine, there's no issue.
If we do this on a Windows 10 machine, Frame locks up and no PDf is
created. Sometimes a .tps is created, sometimes not.

I've an ongoing discussion with someone at Adobe. There was a gap of a few
days, but I just sent them a Visio file and the generated SVG for them to
test with. Guaranteed failure, so maybe it'll help them figure out what's
going on.
