Re: [Framers] a friendly list, for long-time Framer colleagues

Hi, Monique, et. al.

I am in the SF Bay Area and you are totally correct about the trends here … all
of our new documents are on-line, with PDF generation as needed.

I only use FrameMaker occasionally now … my new specs are all done in TeX
(well, LaTeX actually!)

Yes, what Z said!

I haven't used FrameMaker for a goodly number of years now, having moved to
jobs that use a docs-as-code approach. (So Markdown, SSGs [static site
generators], developer tools.) And given the job market and location I'm in --
the San Francisco Bay Area, and lots of startup companies -- it seems unlikely
I'll have a FrameMaker-oriented job ever again.

But I like to remain on this list so that I hear from long-time colleagues,
even if it's just to wish them a happy retirement!

Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?

2019-10-23 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Unfortunately, this is essentially the kind of "licensing" and upgrade pricing
policy changes that I expected some years ago when the subscription versions
were released.

I stopped using FM for _all new_ documents after version 12 and switched to
writing all my new documents to TeX ... my needs may be different from yours,
of course!

And I found alternatives to other Adobe products I was using. With one
exception: Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I am testing an alternative for this too.
FWIW, I love the instant PDF output visual feedback I get from one of my TeX
tools, so I don't use Adobe Acrobat for any TeX documents either!

Now, when I bring up an old FM document for editing a new version, I "convert"
it (manually) to TeX and do not look back for future versions.

Because the upgrade pricing and subscription licensing approach for FrameMaker
simply does not work for me (I emphasize: for me) anymore, period.

As an early adopter of FrameMaker since 1988 (on a Sun 3/50), I remain
disappointed by this, but it became time to move on ... like all things in
life! I am still on this list more out of habit than anything else. 😊

Re: [Framers] Opening FM 2019 documents in FM 2017

2019-10-23 Thread TW Smith
Doug,

I find it helps to require vendors use a specific version of software. In
this case, you have to go back to your vendor and ask for files you can use.

Traditionally, current FrameMaker versions have been able to save as .FM
one version older. So, FM 2019 can save as FM 2017.

If the difference is more than one FrameMaker version, you have to use
.MIF. So, to save from FM 2019 for use in FM 12, save as MIF from
FrameMaker 2019 and open MIF in FM 12.

Does that make sense?

Unfortunately, the only workaround I have to recommend for you (if you
don't get the vendor to help you out) is to download a trial version of FM
2019 and use it to save your files in 2017 format. Of course, the huge
downside of this is that Adobe Sales will hound you to the ends of our flat
Earth to buy the 2019 upgrade.

Cheers,

Sean

from FM 2019 you have to save as an earlier version that can be opened by
2017

Re: [Framers] Opening FM 2019 documents in FM 2017

2019-10-23 Thread Harding, Dan
MIF might work as an intermediary format, but otherwise you need to backsave
FM2019 documents as FM2017 format documents in order to open them in FM2017.

Old applications can't know what differences there are in file formats for
future/forthcoming versions. Application formats like PDF and MS Word/Excel
make sure to retain backwards compatibility at default settings, but it appears
that Frame does not.
