FYI: I am currently using FrameMaker 12 to do a structured project for a
client. FrameMaker 12 is certainly capable of working with structured
documents.

Ditto what Mike said. The ONLY reason I'm still sticking with Frame12 is
because I have no need for structured documents and there haven't been
enough non-structure improvements since FM12 to justify the cost of
upgrading. Yes, some would-be-nice-to-haves, but nothing worth the price.
The strength of FM is that I can still make it jump through serious
advanced-level hoops despite its age. It just may take a bit longer. Same
thing applies to me, too.

2020-01-15 Thread Robert Lauriston
FrameMaker is a specialist tool for people who want template-driven
PDFs (and optionally web help etc.) or who for whatever reason chose
FrameMaker as part of their DITA toolchain.

Adobe has no incentive to make it more competitive with InDesign as a
page-layout program.

[Framers] PSA: Procrastinated in upgrading to Windows 10? You can still do so for free

So, yes, I know. . . the end has been near for a while, and officially,
yesterday, 1/14/2020, MS ended all support for Windows 7. I loathe updating

your upgrade to Windows 10 directly from MS for free. (Certain caveats do
apply, but overall, 99% of the time, you should be fine.)

Re: [Framers] Applying Show/Hide Conditional Settings

2020-01-15 Thread Lynne A. Price

John,
FM should not crash when you apply Show/Hide settings. Please give
us an update and let us know if you experience crashes now that you've
switched to using conditional expressions. When you were using the
Show/Hide shuttle boxes, did FM always crash when processing the same
file? Did restarting FM or rebooting your computer make a difference?
To answer your original question, yes, once you have selected the
files in a book window, you can make Show/Hide settings in the selected
files either using the Show/Hide Conditional Text box, or by importing
formats from a template and checking the Conditional Text Settings box.
Assuming that all the documents already have the same conditional text
definitions, the two methods should produce identical results. In that
since, they are both "right". However, the first method seems more
obvious to me and more in the spirit of conditional text. The condition
tags have to be defined before they can be shown or hidden. The intent
of this FM feature is to be able to show or hide different content
without having to redefine the conditions. It was creative of you to see
if the second method made a difference in observed behavior, but it
shouldn't be necessary.

    --Lynne

I've applied conditions two different ways...

- Select all the files in the book, configure Show/Hide , pick the
condition, move to Show side, click radio button for Show as per Condition,
then Apply.
- In the template file, configure Show/Hide, Apply, then
File->Import->Conditions.

Is one of these the RIGHT way and one the WRONG way, or is there a more
stable way?

John,
You might make sure text symbols are on when you assign the
condition tags. If you want to make an entire paragraph conditional,
make sure you select the end-of-paragraph symbols. If you apply the
condition to all the content of the paragraph without the EOP, hiding
the condition will leave an empty paragraph.

Hi, guys...

In developing the Conditional Expression (first time doing it), is it
advisable that within the parens, to list multiple exclusions as "A" or
"B", or "A" and "b"?

Below I have a portion of my statement where I want to INCLUDE Collis,
Amanda but EXCLUDE everyone else (there are a total of 19 (1 include and 18
excludes). The intent is to show any text belonging to Amanda, but exclude
everyone else.

"Collis, Amanda" and not ( "Cunningham, Brian" or "Fit, Deanna" or
"Gilmore, Tzedek" or "Hoy, Nicole" or "Kassis, David" or "Lee, Edward" or
"Litwak, David" or "Noor, Khurram" or "OMara, Vincent" or ...etc.

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Applying Show/Hide Conditional Settings

2020-01-15 Thread Reng Winfried
Hi John,

When there are bullets without content, then the paragraph mark
does not have the condition.
When this is at the end of a flow (in a table cell or at the end of the
main text flow), then add an empty paragraph without condition
after the paragraph with the condition.

You asked whether you can import regular expressions into other files.
I checked this and could import the regular expressions from another
file.
Just use File | Import | Formats. Then select Conditional Text Settings.

Best regards

Robert...I think this can work. I have to do some tweeks, like add a default
condition for sections and files that don't have an owner yet so that I can
exclude those sections from each "personal SME book build". I should be able to
define 19 expressions, one for each content owner.

I also noticed that some tiny snippets got through. like some bullets without
content, stuff like that. However, it has potential.

Question...I have a "RunBookTemplate" document where I define all of my styles,
and when I define or modify a style, I make it in the template, then copy the
appropriate formats to all the files in the book from the tempalte. Can I store
my Expressions in that document and when I create a new document or add a new
Expression, replicate the new or modified Expressions to the new document or
all the documents in the book?

Anyway..thanks for the tip...I think this is going to work for me.

Thank you
