Slash in dialog boxes become bullets in pdf

2011-02-01 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
OK, here are some more details:

* FrameMaker 8.0p277, unstructured

* Types of dialog boxes: Variable definitions and Index marker text.

* My variable format definition: SAILOR 6120/30/40/50 (just text, no
character formats or anything)

* I think my index entry was "I/O connector" or something similar

* The font is a special company font (Type 1)

* I don't get any missing fonts messages in FrameMaker

* Another thing: I tried experimenting a bit. When the paragraph format
had Weight = Bold, the problem was not there (that was the reason why my
headings were OK). But since I can't have all my variables in bold, I tried
changing the variable definition with commas instead of slashes. Then I changed
it back to slashes, and now the problem is gone! Exactly the same definition as
before, but now I don't see the problem. Only trouble is: I am not very
confident that the problem won't come back...

Christiane

Hi Christiane

You certainly are discovering some weird phenomena! It would help if you could
give concrete examples, though. Can you post (to the list):
what version of FrameMaker
which dialog boxes you are referring to
the exact format for your variable
the character format definitions used in your variable, if any
what exactly you typed for your index entry
what fonts you are using, and the type (e.g. OpenType, Type 1, etc.)
whether you get any missing fonts messages in the FM console

These details would help immensely in trying to help you.

Regards,
Roger

Hi Framers,
Windows XP, Frame 8.0p277, unstructured.
Thanks for the replies to my e-mail about conditionalized cross-references -
that one is still not solved, unfortunately :(.
Now I have a new problem: When I type a slash (/) in a dialog box, it comes out
as a bullet in my pdf. I have seen it in my index and in a variable. One
strange thing though: My variable is OK in headings, but in body text the
slashes come out as bullets in the pdf. In my Frame files everything looks OK.
Any ideas/suggestions how I can avoid this? (I tried putting a backslash before
the slash, but that didn't change anything)

Thanks,
Christiane

Conditionalized cross-references

2011-01-27 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers.
Windows XP SP3, FrameMaker 8.0p277.
We have a strange problem with our cross-references when they are made
conditional.
The definition of the cross-reference is: <$paratext>
on page\ <$pagenum>
It seems the makes the text unconditional, i.e. the text from
"on page" is unconditional although the whole cross-reference should be
conditional.
Is there any way we can avoid this behavior?
Thanks in advance!

First referenced graphic in pdf turns gray

2010-04-23 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Art.

I downloaded the hotfix, but that didn't help. If I print to PS and then
run it through the Distiller it works fine. So that's what I'll do for
now...

Thanks for your advice though!

-And by the way: The other problem I had with FrameMaker wanting to quit
when I generate pdf disappeared all of a sudden yesterday. I can't think
of anything I've done that should make a difference (this was before I
installed the hotfix), but the problem is gone...

Because you're on XP, it'd be a good idea to install Microsoft's Hotfix
for PostScript printer issues.
It addresses a number of issues in addition to the ones listed, so in
general it would be a great idea (IMHO, of course).

First referenced graphic in pdf turns gray

2010-04-22 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Sorry! Here is some additional information:

Acrobat: Full version (Acrobat 9 Pro)

Adobe Distiller 9 (version 9.3.2163)

Driver: Adobe PDF converter

Method: Save as PDF

Usually this setup works fine for me, but I've had this error a couple
of times in different books.

In order to provide meaningful suggestions, we need to know more
details, including:
Do you have the full version of Acrobat or do you have only the
Distiller bundled with FrameMaker? What version of Distiller and/or
Acrobat are you using?
What printer driver are you using? The "Adobe PDF" virtual printer that
gets installed in the FrameMaker install?
What method are you using to generate the PDF? Save As PDF? Print to
"Adobe PDF" virtual printer? Print to PostScript file then distill to
PDF?

Frame closes when generating pdf

Yes, I can reproduce it. I have only seen it with one of my FM books, and it
happens everytime I generate a pdf from that book.

Good question. I have seen the same error in Frame 7.2 occasionally
when generating on-line help using WebWorks ePublisher, probably
during the printing/rasterization stage.

It indicates Frame is trying to close during the operation. In my case
it is not reproducible (doesn't happen very often). Can you reproduce
it on a particular Frame file or book?

Frame closes when generating pdf

2010-04-22 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers.

FM 8.0p277 on Windows XP.

I have a strange problem with one of my FM books:

When I generate a pdf from this book, I get a popup saying "Cannot
quit". But I didn't tell FM to quit! Then when I click OK (which is the
only option), I'm asked if I want to save my files. I can click
"Cancel", so it's no big problem, but I'm just curious why this is
happening? Does anyone have an answer?

The pdf generates fine, so nothing wrong there...

Thanks,

Christiane

First referenced graphic in pdf turns gray

2010-04-22 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers.

FM 8.0p277 on Windows XP.

Strange error when generating a pdf file from an FM book:

The first referenced graphic in the book becomes gray (like unresolved
graphics references) in the pdf, but not in FM.

It has nothing to do with the graphic itself. I can move the graphic
after the other graphics and it looks fine. I can put another graphic in
the first anchored frame, and the same problem occurs: it appears as a
gray box in the pdf. I can delete the first anchored frame and the new
first graphic turns gray. It is always the first referenced graphic in
the pdf that turns gray.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is there anything I can do to fix
it?

Thanks,

Christiane

No it is not the same, I just tried printing to PS and then distilling
and that works fine! I guess that's what I'll have to do then :-)

Is it the same if you print to PS and distill the PS?

RE: First referenced graphic in pdf turns gray

2010-04-22 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Sorry! Here is some additional information:

Acrobat: Full version (Acrobat 9 Pro)

Adobe Distiller 9 (version 9.3.2163)

Driver: Adobe PDF converter

Method: Save as PDF

Usually this setup works fine for me, but I've had this error a couple
of times in different books.

In order to provide meaningful suggestions, we need to know more
details, including:
Do you have the full version of Acrobat or do you have only the
Distiller bundled with FrameMaker? What version of Distiller and/or
Acrobat are you using?
What printer driver are you using? The "Adobe PDF" virtual printer that
gets installed in the FrameMaker install?
What method are you using to generate the PDF? Save As PDF? Print to
"Adobe PDF" virtual printer? Print to PostScript file then distill to
PDF?

Good question. I have seen the same error in Frame 7.2 occasionally
when generating on-line help using WebWorks ePublisher, probably
during the printing/rasterization stage.

It indicates Frame is trying to close during the operation. In my case
it is not reproducible (doesn't happen very often). Can you reproduce
it on a particular Frame file or book?

Hi Christiane,

as far as I know, there are only two patches for FM 7.2. So just install
7.2b144 first and then 7.2p158 and you should be fine.

You can find 7.2p158 here:

FM 7.2 updates

2007-09-13 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers,

I just got a new PC, reinstalled FrameMaker 7.2 and looked at Adobes
site to get the latest updates. However, it seems that you cannot get
updates earlier than 7.2b144, and 7.2b144 requires that you have
7.2b128. Anyone knows how to deal with this?
Thanks!

CMYK/RGB conversion

Hi Martin,

I'm glad to hear that. I'll continue with these settings and see how it
works out...
Thanks again!

Hi again,

I'm glad it was of help to you Christiane. I double-checked here on my
files again and when checking the black text elements in the Preflight
tool Enfocus Pitstop, it is reported as (as you say) "Gray" with 0%
"Brightness". Although when using the Output Preview advanced function
in Acrobat 7 Pro itself, the same elements are reported as "Process
Black 100%" (when holding the mouse pointer over those elements). I
don't do any color conversion in the Distiller settings.

I don't know why it is reported with different names in the two tools
(maybe someone else can explain this?), but I am almost sure it wont
create any problems in the printing process anyway.

CMYK/RGB conversion

2006-11-09 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Thanks a lot, Martin!
You were right about my printer settings. I changed them and it did make a
difference. However, when I check the text color, it is not defined as CMYK,
but as "Grey 0%". Could it be my Distiller settings that are not correct? Or is
the "Grey 0%" really the same as K=0?
I'm not exactly an expert on colors, as you may have noticed. But I would
really like to understand the basics, so that I can get my settings right for
the print shop.

Thanks again.

Christiane,

I assume you use Windows and that you print your Framemaker-book to PostScript
via an installed PostScript printer.
In Control Panel, right click the PostScript printer and choose Properties ->
Device Settings. Make sure "Convert Gray Text to PostScript Gray" and "Convert
Gray Graphics to PostScript Gray" are set to Yes. If they were set to No, I
think this is what is causing the problem with your black text getting
converted to RGB. Changing it to Yes should prevent this. I have those options
set to Yes and black text is correctly preserved as K=100% from Frame to PDF
(while all other use of colours in text-elements gets converted to RGB).

More info on this:
"True gray" support options for both vector graphics and text. Defaulted to
"no" values, when set to "yes" the "Convert Gray Text to PostScript Gray" and
"Convert Gray Graphics to PostScript Gray" assume that for all text and vector
graphics objects respectively, color values in which the red (R), green (G),
and blue (B) values match are really an expression of grayscale as opposed to
RGB color. The default "no" results in those RGB values passed through to the
printer or Distiller as-is. The "yes" value can dramatically improve output
quality for black and grayscale text and vector graphics for PostScript color
printers that do not automatically make assumptions about and convert R=G=B
values to K values. The "yes" value also assists in creating prepress-friendly
PostScript and PDF from applications that do not generate their own PostScript
(including Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Office, and other popular office suite
and productivity programs). [I recommend that users always set these values to
"yes" - Dov.]

CMYK/RGB conversion

2006-11-08 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Thanks Richard - I was afraid that would be the case!

I guess I was just hoping there would be some magic Distiller setting
that could bring back my CMYK ;-) At least I would think that an
"absolute" color like black should be easily converted to RGB and back
to CMYK. When I select "Leave color unchanged" in the Distiller the RGB
color is R=0%, G=0%, B=0% as it should be - so it is the conversion back
to CMYK that I can't get right...

What I don't understand is how other people cope with this? There must
be at least a million people out there who need to deliver "all CMYK"
documents to their print shop?

Best regards,

Christiane

I'm not an expert, but I haven't seen any other responses, so here's my
(limited) understanding of this issue:

You can't stay in the CMYK color space on a Windows machine because FM
doesn't have its own print engine -- it uses the Windows GDI (even to
"print" to Distiller). That means everything except EPS graphics (and
maybe imported PDFs) is converted to RGB first.

The conversion from RGB back to CMYK is of necessity not perfect --
although the values you cite strike me as unusually far off. Maybe
someone knows what settings will get you closer.

But I suspect you really need those post-processing tools you'd prefer
to avoid. :-}

HTH!

CMYK/RGB conversion

2006-11-07 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers,

Using FM 7.2 and Distiller 7.0 to create pdf for print.
I have some trouble trying to figure out how to cope with the "convert to RGB"
problem with FrameMaker.
When I generate pdf files from FrameMaker, some of the colors are converted to
RGB.
If I select the Distiller option "Convert all colors to CMYK" I avoid the RGB,
but the colors are not defined the way they were in FM. For example, my black
text is
C=0%, M=0%, Y=0%, K=100% in FrameMaker, but
C=74.9%, M=67.8%, Y=67.1% and K=90.2% in the pdf file.

I know there are also tools that can convert to CMYK after creating the pdf
file, but I would really prefer it if the Distiller could take care of it...

Does anyone know how to keep the original CMYK values in the pdf output? I'm
pulling my hair out

Thanks in advance!

2006-04-28 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi,

I am using "Save as pdf" for an FM 7.2 book.

I am wondering why each time I save as pdf the FrameMaker Console says:

"The "Times" Font is not available."Times New Roman" will be used in
this session."

As far as I know I am not using Times in my FM book. Where could this be
coming from? I have used "Find Character Format" to search for the font,
but have not found it. I have also used the Find function in Master
pages and Reference pages with no success.

This is not a showstopper, of cause, but just a small annoyance.

Anybody have any idea where this could come from?

Thanks!

Christiane

Adding a Blank Page Before/After Book Cover

2006-03-17 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Angela,

I get a separate pdf from our Marketing dep. containing the front page for my
manual.
Here is how I do it:
1. Put an empty page in my FM file where the front page should be.
2. Create the pdf.
3. Open the manual pdf in Acrobat (Standard).
4. Put the cursor in the first page.
5. Select Document > Pages > Replace.
6. Browse to my front page pdf and insert it.

This way I keep the numbering of pages correct. You should be able to do the
same with your back cover.

If you need to have a completely blank page, you could place a dedicated
paragraph format on the page. Then in your reference page, assign your blank
master page to this paragraph format. This way the blank master page will not
be overwritten by the default Left/Right master pages, but will stay there
through all your updates.

Hope this helps!

/Christiane
