missing PDF chapter

2009-11-22 Thread Crimmin, Peter
Here's an interesting problem for any automap users out there:

* From FrameMaker, manually generate a book and create a PDF. No
problems.
* From an Automap job, automatically create a PDF. One chapter
goes missing in the PDF output. Instead, automap creates a MIF file with
this naming fomat: MyFile.MIF.hex (where hex is a hex number of
length=3).

Previously, I discovered this error when the FM file contained a graphic
pasted into an anchored frame (instead of imported by reference). But in
this case, the missing chapter has no graphics whatsoever.

cross book cross-references

2009-03-02 Thread Crimmin, Peter
Regarding cross-references that span across books.

BACKGROUND

I reviewed framer archives and I'm able to create functioning
cross-references in the resulting PDF files.
For example, a cross-reference in myBook1.pdf can find its target inside
of myBook2.pdf.

PROBLEM

But... this only works when generating the PDFs from FrameMaker. Are
there any WebWorks Automap users who use this feature?

When I generate the PDFs with Automap, the cross-references attempt to
find their targets in the individual chapter files instead of in the
generated book file. For example, a cross reference in myBook1.pdf
attempts to find its target inside myChapter2.pdf, which does not exist
(because it is generated inside myBook2.pdf).

Solutions?

Server-based (hosted) documentation and user comments (DocBook?)

2008-10-31 Thread Crimmin, Peter

[cross-posted to TECHWR-L mailing list]

Can anyone recommend technologies to do the following:

* Hosted documentation, available on the internet as a web
service.

* Each doc topic allows users to add comments. (e.g. Here's a
better example to do this task...)

* Management tools to moderate user comments, and to handle
documentation updates (retaining the comments).

* Authoring tools to produce said documentation.

The open source community exploits these technologies. How do they do
it? I have an inkling for a solution: FrameMakerDocBookePublisher?

Thanks for your ideas

Bug - incorrect numbering a file in a book

2006-12-06 Thread Crimmin, Peter
Summary:

Framemaker insists on incorrectly numbering a file in a book.

Scenario:

The framemaker book contains several chapters and appendices.
Add a new file to the book. For example, a 5th chapter.
Generate the book; frame complains that numbering is different in the
document and book. Frame says it will use the book numbering.
Chapter 5 gets re-numbered as chapter 1. (When this bug strikes, it always
renumbers to 1.)
fyi, the book file is set up to continue numbering.

Question:

Does anyone know how this happens or how to fix it? (I have a long
workaround to fix it, but want a better solution.)

Thanks for advice,

PeterC
