Recommended format for importing vector graphics
All, My department generates vector graphics in Illustrator CS2 and imports them into Frame 7.2 as EPS. Recently, we've considered importing our graphics as PDF because it (1) provides a full preview instead of a TIFF preview and (2) the Illustrator PDF file size is smaller than the EPS file size. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to importing Illustrator graphics as PDF instead of EPS that we're not considering? Thanks in advance, David Bills Melbourne, FL

Change bars in Framemaker
Hi Becky, If you're going to use automatic change bars, it's important to understand what is marked as a change when this command is activated. For example, updated cross-references are marked as a change; updated graphics that are imported by reference are not marked as a change; updated graphics that are imported with a different file name are marked as a change; etc. If you're experiencing undesirable results, mark the changes manually. It takes a little longer, but the peace of mind is worth it. Also, the compare document feature mentioned in a previous e-mail doesn't do a good job identifying changes in tables or graphics. It also introduces conditional text to the document, which adds a layer of complexity to the document. It's a useful tool, but probably not the best solution for your situation. Variables vs Cross-references vs Text Insets [WAS: Hiding Pages?]
Eric, It may not be a relevant issue for you, but our department switched from xrefs to variables because the less experienced Frame users kept breaking the links and generating unresolved xrefs. We didn't think this would be difficult problem to resolve, but a number of the writers kept breaking the links after they had been trained, so we changed the way we managed the nomenclatures. The point I'm attempting to make is that large departments, particularly those that weigh specialized technical skills and experience higher than desktop publishing skills, should factor the Frame capabilities of their less skilled Frame users into these types of decisions. But to combine multiple paragraphs, you need to have information that's consistently tagged and organised. Then, it's only really workable to create strings as I have done. Organization Charts
Hi Eduardo, Visio is a popular tool with excellent org chart capabilities. You can use one of three options when working with Visio and Frame: - import Visio files into Frame as an object - convert the Visio file to PDF and import the PDF into Frame - or convert the Visio file to PDF, save it as an EPS, and import the EPS into Frame If you're committed to using an Adobe application, you can always use Illustrator. It's not as intuitive as Visio, but is more than capable of producing a high quality org chart. Just make sure you view rulers and grid lines and activate the snap feature. Good luck! OT: Including Acrobat Reader on Manual CD-ROM - Thanks!
All, Thank you for your thoughtful and informative responses. In addition to the list posts, Dave Brown provided a URL that describes the process at: <http://www.indigorose.com/webhelp/ams60/How_do_I/Run_Adobe_Acrobat_Reader_directly_from_the_CD-ROM.htm> As Peter suggested, we'll check with our Adobe rep and ensure that we're complying with their license prior to proceeding. It's a Government contract, so the customer will be flexible if there's a licensing issue involved.
