Re: mass update of system variable

2013-04-22 Thread ETudsbery
Hi Lin,

Thanks very much for this help.

I created a MIF file with the system variable definitions I required and
then imported that into different FM books. It worked a dream, as it
didn't change the user variables defined in the document (which was my
concern).

thanks again,

Edwin

If it helps any, I learned to do this from Shlomo. :)

Yes, Edwin will have to open each book to do this, but it's still faster
than editing one file in each book and importing from there. I don't think
there's a plugin available that will do any better than that.

Hi Lin,

I was sure.

If you open a MIF snippet to be able to import formats
from it, all variables which are not defined in the MIF snippet
are populatead with the default values. That’s why I never used
it to import formats from it. However, if you do import formats,
it seems that these default values are _not_ imported although
they are there. Strange.

If you import the MIF snippet as a file, then you can import it only
into a single file. Of course you can then import variables into
all other files of the book. However, this is not what the poster
wanted.

I would make a book with all the files (from all the folders
and subfolders) and use one of the plugin to import a single
variable.

Really? I've used a MIF snippet in the last month to update all the
variables in a book file, and that was in Frame10.

(ETudsbury, I forgot to say that you have to reopen the MIF file in
FrameMaker, but I figured you'd know that since the file you're importing
from has to be open.)

Hi,

MIF snippets do not work.
You can import the MIF snippet only via import by copy
into a single file. If you would then import the variables
from this file into other files (via import formats), you would
import all variables.

I would recommend to check the variable plugins from
Leximation and Silicon Prairie Software:

I do not know these plugins. However, I am sure
they would help you.

MIF snippet.

1. Open a blank document and edit the variables you want to update.
2. Save as a MIF file.
3. Open the MIF file in a TEXT editor.
4. Delete everything but the code for the variables you want to update.
5. Save and close the file.
6. Open the files you want to update and import variables from the MIF
snippet.
Let me know if you have questions. :)

FrameMaker (dita) and SVN

2012-12-05 Thread ETudsbery
Hi all,

I currently use FrameMaker to author DITA files. I currently work alone
but will soon be joined by three other writers. For this reason I was
planning on using SVN for source control (SVN is already used in the
company for the application code).

I was wondering how practical it is to use this pairing. Is there any
integration between the new versions of FrameMaker and SVN? Or do I have
to check out the files in a separate SVN client before opening the files
in FrameMaker?

Thanks in advance for any information.
regards,

Edwin Tudsbery

Technical Communication Suite

2009-11-23 Thread ETudsbery

Hi all,

I am interested in buying the Adobe Technical Communication Suite (TCS),
and was wondering if anyone had experience of upgrading to the TCS from a
previous version of FrameMaker.

I currently use FM 7.2 and WebWorks ePublisher 9.2. Does anyone know if FM
9.0 will work with ePublisher 9.2?

If I buy an upgrade to TCS from Fm 7.2, can I continue to use FM 7.2 and
install the other components of the TCS? If I continue to use FM7.2, can I
use it with the Acrobat 9.0 Pro Extended in the TCS?

Thanks,

Edwin Tudsbery

sdl trados and FM (translation)

2008-10-17 Thread ETudsbery

Hello,

I am familiar with FrameMaker but not with SDL Trados. I am trying to
translate some documents into French with SDL Edit, which allows *.mif
files as input. When I start a new translation, I select the *.mif file,
and then it creates four intermediarary *.itd files (one for the text, one
for x-refs, one for index entries, one for variables and number formats. My
question is that when I translate these four documents and reexport them to
mif, I end up with four documents. Is there some way to re-import my
translated index entries, variable entries, and numbering formats back into
my main document?

thanks,

Edwin Tudsbery

Chapter title

2008-02-08 Thread ETudsbery

Hello Framers,

FM 7.2

I'm designing a new template, and I would like a chapter paragraph style
with the chapter number on one line and the paragraph text on the line
below. Given that it's not possible to enter a forced return in the
Autonumber format for the chapter paragraph style, I was wondering about
the best method to achieve this. If I enter a soft return after entering
the chapter paragraph style, this creates a soft return in the
corresponding table of contents, which then has to be manually removed. So,
I'm not keen on that. Is the best method just to put a lot of spaces in the
Autonumber format box to force the paragraph text onto the next line? Are
there any drawbacks (perhaps with conversion to PDF or online help)?

Thanks,

Edwin Tudsbery

word count

2007-07-18 Thread ETudsbery

FM 7.2

Is it possible to do a word count on a FrameMaker book? I need to calculate
the word count for a translation project and I have about 400 FM files;
it's very boring having to do File Utilities Document Reports
WordCount for each document.

Thanks for any help.

Colour question

2006-06-09 Thread ETudsbery

I'm trying to create some colours for a FrameMaker template which
correspond to our corporate style guide and I'm finding it rather
difficult. One of our corporate colours is Pantone 2627 which is a dark
violet. When I select Pantone 2627 in the Colour Definitions dialog box, it
does indeed look violet on the screen, but the CMYK values for Pantone 2627
(83C, 100M, 0Y, 23K) correspond to a blue -- and this is the colour I get
when I generate a PDF or print to a colour printer. Any ideas what I'm
doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.
