CGM lines do not scale
My thanks to those responding. The solution is to install an older version of the filter files that FrameMaker uses for importing .cgm graphics (isoconverter.dll and optcgm.prf ). The version supplied with FM8 is v 6.1.06; I installed v 6.1.01. About half a dozen versions can be downloaded from the PTC web site (ptc.com/products/arbortext/cgm-filters.htm), which is also FrameMaker's source for the cgm filter). Translations or Localisation of Framemaker content
Hi Framers, We have two rather large technical manuals (300+ pages each with text and illustrations) that will need to be translated into Russian (90-95% of the material is common to both manuals). The content involves low to mid-level information on mechanical, hydraulic, high-power, low-power, fiber-optic, and telemetry systems (and a kitchen sink). We have not had to do any translations prior to this, so it is unknown territory. I'd appreciate any comments about how the process works, how to make it successful, and what pitfalls to avoid. FM update 8.04 failure
Hi, I'm having trouble with installing update 8.04 to Framemaker ("version 8.0p276"). The 8.04 update downloads, but during the installation process gives an error message: "You do not have the correct version of FM install (sic) on your system. As noted above FM>Help>About indicates the program IS at Version 8 p276, so what is going on? Is update 8.04 worth installing, and if so, how can I get it to install? Unlocking "Pgf Locked"
Every now and then I get stuck with one of those auto-generated paragraphs that appears after a text inset that refuses to cooperate with being retagged for the subsequent paragraph and can't even be deleted. As a last resort, I recently converted a file with this problem to a .mif and in Notepad found the offending paragraph, which included the following notation: "Pgf Locked." When I deleted this line, and then opened the file in FM, the paragraph tag could be deleted. Is there a keyboard shortcut in Framemaker for unlocking a paragraph with this problem? Why are some pages rotating in book pdf: followup
Here is a followup: The FM pages with pdf graphics (from SolidWorks) will remain in correct portrait orientation after printing to .ps and distilled to pdf IF they are rotated ccw 89.999 degrees; however, if they are rotated 90 degrees they will cause the page to rotate cw to landscape orientation in the pdf output. It would seem that a rotation setting to 90 degrees is being confused with some page orientation setting. Its still difficult to know where this is occuring; I'm wary of the SolidWorks pdf conversion (is their driver really ps or an emulator?) but it seems like Acrobat or Framemaker is confused by some rotation setting as well. ??? Why are some pages rotating in book pdf
We have a number of FrameMaker files that have anchored frames containing pdf-format graphics made from SolidWorks drawings (imported by reference, rotated from landscape to portrait, and scaled). When these files are separately printed to .ps and then distilled to pdf, everything is fine. When the files are part of a FrameMaker book and the book is printed to .ps and then distilled to pdf, some pages containing these graphics will rotate to landscape orientation. This does not happen with AutoCad files converted to pdf and imported into Framemaker, so there is definitely a SolidWorks factor, but only about a third of the drawing conversions are involved in this rotation problem. And, what would be different about printing a book versus a single file? Any ideas as to cause or cure would be appreciated. Unresolved Cross Reference
Edward, As someone else mentioned, its usually a text inset that won't update automatically for some reason ("Could be a text inset inserted just before a title which has a X-Ref marker"). I have a lot of text insets that fit that condition, but most function without any trouble. Besides Stephen O'Briens solution, you can also try (as a quick fix) using Find/Change for "Any text inset" in the document, double-click in the inset, and then click the "Update now" button. Sometimes the problem goes away permanently (Frame quirk?) .PS Frustration
Hi Framers, What would cause a .ps file printed from a Framemaker book to fail when the destination is the same folder as the FrameMaker file, but successfully print to another folder on the same drive? Naturally this behavior started when the manual is due, so I am printing the book to another folder. Not a major pain, but I've never had this problem before. PDFs out of FM 7.2 losing text
Followup: In FM 7.2 I backsaved one troublesome doc to FM 6. On one computer, FM 7.2 was removed and FM 6 was installed. The backsaved doc was opened in FM 6 and printed to Adobe PDF (Acrobat 7.2 pro). The .ps file was distilled and looks OK: all the text in the pdf drawings remains. So, it looks like a FM 7.2 issue with pdf prints of SolidWorks files. I hope there is an answer - don't really want to uninstall FM 7.2 and re-install FM 6. Fred F. PDFs out of FM 7.2 losing text
We recently installed FrameMaker 7.2 (from FM 6) on our tech-Pubs computers and have encountered a problem converting certain .FM files with PDF graphics to PDF files via Acrobat 7 pro. The problem graphics are pdf conversions of SolidWorks drawings that we import by reference into FM documents. Using Framemaker 6 we never had a problem with printing to Adobe PDF (as .ps) and then distilling to .pdf. However, with Framemaker 7.2 installed, the print to Adobe PDF process results in all the text being stripped from the drawings, regardless of any embed or do not embed font settings (with FM 6 we never embedded fonts when printing these graphics files to PDF and they printed to pdf OK). This problem does not occur in AutoCad 14 drawings that have been converted to pdf files and imported into the same FM file. So, the issue seems to be between pdf files from SolidWorks and FrameMaker 7.2. This has happened on two separate network computers with Windows XP, but of quite different vintages and configurations. The commonality is the recent installation of FM 7.2. Naturally, there are looming deadlines. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Fred Fred Staal Supervisor, Technical Publications Schilling Robotics 201 Cousteau Place Davis, Ca 95616 (530) 753-6718 x 155 fred.staal at schilling.com

(OT) Stand-alone Reader 7.0?
We provide a CD of our technical manuals along with an Adobe Reader executable that is installed automatically if no reader program is detected (or can be installed manually if desired). In downloading Reader 7 for this purpose you get is a small .AOM file that requires an internet connection for the complete download which then sends 3 executables. I'm reasonable sure that AdbeRdr705_enu_full.exe installs Reader, but would like to know if the other two .exe files (psa30se_en_us.exe and ytb612_efgsip.exe) are required for that process or have some other function.
