Lin, Craig, and Wim,

Much thanks for all of your suggestions. The consensus I am hearing is looking
for characters formats in the headings. I will definitely let you know what I
learn. At the moment I have gotten pulled into some higher-priority tasking,
but will be back on the case in the coming days.

This is a great forum and has been helpful in the past with little 'nuggets' of
wisdom.

I will try both of those suggestions. I have multiple copies of this O manual
(and many others) I can experiment with and import from. That is especially a
good point about the current TOC file. It may be corrupt or have some odd issue
with it. I forget that this isn't the wider Adobe FrameMaker community and am

FM-generated PDF

Huh. At this point, I'd try two things. First is a MIF wash of the TOC file,
then a regeneration of the PDF. If that doesn't fix it, I'd suggest deleting
the current TOC file (from the book and disk) and recreating it from scratch
and see if it works correctly. (I hope you have a TOC template somewhere with
the correct paragraph formats and reference page that you can import from.)

If that still doesn't work, I would suggest posting to the Adobe FrameMaker
community. I'm there, too, but there are lots of people who dig far further
into the esoterica of FM also there, such as Barb Binder and Matt Sullivan and
Klaus Daube, who may have an idea of what's causing this.

At this point, without actually seeing the files in question, I can't visualize
things well enough to help, and I'm sorry about that.

Thank you for your patience. Hard to describe graphics textually sometimes.

What you just described is correct. The links in my List of Figures, List of
Tables, and Index of the generated PDF work exactly the same as you described
they work for you. When I hover my mouse over the invisible boxes it changes
from a hand icon to a pointing figure icon. I can right-click and get the
'Delete Link' or 'Edit Link' options. From there, yes, I do go to the Action
tab to make any adjustments.

But, for some reason my TOC is not generating those links at all. If I
right-click on an entry I just get a laundry list of options like 'Add Sticky
Note', ' Insert Text at Cursor', 'Select Tool', 'Hand Tool', etc. While it
might be a setting in PDF, its seems more like the TOC.fm file is not doing
something that the PDF needs to create the TOC links, since the links are
created for the other three and they work in both Acrobat and Foxit.

OK, I'm not certain I'm following you entirely. When I open my PDF files in
Acrobat and right click on a TOC entry, I am given the option to edit the link.
If I select Edit Link, the Link Properties window is shown. By default, the
Link Type on the Appearance tab is set to Invisible Rectangle.
If you change it to Visible Rectangle, you can see the bounding box, but that
isn't necessary to edit the link.

If you click on Actions, you can delete the current link in the Actions box and
add a different link using the Add an Action, which is what it sounds like
you're trying to do?

2021-02-02 Thread Harrington, Matthew (Contractor)
Hi Lin,

Much thanks for the responses.

To your first email, I did go in and look at my TOC.fm file under the Format >
Document > PDF Setup... dialog box. The settings you mentioned were already
selected as you described (under the 'Bookmarks' tab vice the 'Tags
(Distiller)' tab) with those headers already under the "Include Paragraphs:"
pane and the Generate PDF Bookmarks checked. I believe the hierarchy is correct
(our layout and naming might look a little odd, but they work for our purposes)
:
Heading 1
Heading 1 Appen
Heading 1 Desc
Heading 1 Intro
Heading 1 Sys
.Heading 2
.Heading 2TOC Special
..Heading 3
...Heading 4
Etc.
The PDF bookmarks do work correctly as generated and I am able to add new ones,
change where they link to within (or outside of the PDF).

In your second email, you are correct, though the trouble I am having in the
PDF is that unlike the List of Tables, List of Figures, and the Index, the TOC
does not seem to want to generate the links (as bounding boxes) in the first
place to the headers in the body. I would have to use the crosshair and draw
one around every single entry!

Since it works in the other three FM files (LOT, LOF, Index), I was thinking
something must not be set correctly in my TOC file in FrameMaker. However, when
I compare the LOT, LOF, and Index against the TOC via Format > Document > PDF
Setup... dialog box, they all *appear* to be set up the same way. For one
section in the both the bookmarks and the TOC, the reason we need to use the
links that are automaticaly generated is to open folders just outside of the
PDF that contain a bunch of large PDFs so are engineers can access supplemental
info. Yes, convoluted. :-)

Something must not be set correctly.

Matt

OK, now I'm not sure I read your email right.

You are generating both PDF bookmarks and hyperlinks for the TOC to the
headings in the document, correct? And then you want to edit where the links
from the TOC entries go to in the document using Acrobat Pro even though they
are already linked to the heading in the document?

[Framers] Table of Contents issue in FM-generated PDF

2021-02-02 Thread Harrington, Matthew (Contractor)
Hi Framers,

I'm having a little FrameMaker-generated PDF issue with the table of contents
(TOC) and wondered if anyone might know a solution? Maybe this is the way PDFs
have always worked when generated from Adobe FrameMaker, but my use of FM is
intermittent, so I don't remember. I have been scouring the Internet on and off
over several days seeking a solution, but coming up empty.

So, an example in contrast first: when I convert a Word document to a PDF using
'Save As PDF', the TOC automatically converts all of its entries into
hyperlinks to those headings throughout the document (much as bookmarks
generated by FrameMaker do in a PDF). In both Adobe Acrobat Pro DC and in Foxit
PhantomPDF I can then go to Edit [PDF] > Link and click the 'Add/Edit Web or
Document Link' function, which highlights every entry in the TOC with a nice
bounding box. I can then modify where they link by making changes in
right-click > Properties.

A few months ago I was upgraded from FrameMaker version 12.0.4.445 to
FrameMaker version 16.0.0.754 and still running on a Windows 10 laptop in both
cases (FM 12 is still on my laptop, but I do not use it). Even under FM 12, I
don't believe the generated PDF would let me to do what I described above with
its generated PDF opened in Adobe Acrobat. Instead, it seemed like I was only
able to do those things with Foxit PhantomPDF. For a large document, containing
hundreds of headings this is a HUGE timesaver.

However, under FM 16, it appears I can't get the TOC bounding boxes even with
Foxit PhantomPDF. None of the settings under the 'PDF' option under the FM
Publish function jump out as the issue-though I do not know if clicking either
"Create Tagged PDF" (section 508 stuff) or "Use Acrobat Distiller for PDF
generation" would fix this. Oddly, when I click that 'Edit > Link' function in
either Adobe Acrobat Pro DC or in Foxit PhantomPDF, I do get the bounding boxes
in my List of Figures, List of Tables, and Index. This makes me inclined to
think it may be more of a TOC setting in FrameMaker, but I don't know. Does
anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped.

Thank you,
Matt

Re: [Framers] [SPAM-heur] Re: FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-01 Thread Harrington, Matthew (Contractor)
Hi Jerilynne,

I don't know if this may help, but when I work from home (like most of us
lately), I plug in my laptop (Win10), via HDMI, into a nice LG 32" (32MP58)
display. A few months ago I noticed every time I opened my FrameMaker (v.12),
my horizontal menu/formatting bars were all overlapping each other
horizontally, kind of similar to yours. I did not experience it with book files
like you are now. It does look like a scaling (?) issue, which I think was the
problem I was having.

I too, messed around with the resolution settings. For some reason 1600 x 900
corrected the problem. That said, right not I am running at 1920 x 1080 (my
default at home--but at work it defaults to 1900 x 1200--go figure). I just
opened my FrameMaker and it is fine at 1920 x 1080.

You have two 27" monitors so it might work differently, but maybe you could try
just using one monitor at the 1600 x 900 and see if it makes a difference. It
might lead you down a path to resolving this?

Good luck!
Matt Harrington

I did putz and fiddle with some of display settings and didn't see any changes

[Framers] FW: Simple grammar question

2019-06-06 Thread Harrington, Matthew (Contractor)
This one I struggle with too. However, since we follow the Chicago Manual of
Style (CMS) I found a helpful guideline. In CMS Seventeenth Edition on pp.
534-535, 8.180, it basically states that words chapter, part, appendix, table,
figure, etc. are lowercased and spelled out in text.

Is it a proper noun?

Should the word "position" be capitalized when it is used as a label in a
sentence? Such as in this one:

The display is in position E.

I'm inclined to leave it in lowercase, but I'm unsure.

Thanks!

Thank you for the info, Rick. A bit of a surprise for us, but good to know
moving forward.

You can't open a FrameMaker file created with a later version with an earlier
version of FrameMaker. In other words, if you have FrameMaker 12, you can't
open FrameMaker 2019 files. If you are going to work in a mixed environment,
you can save the files as MIF (Maker Interchange File) and those will open in
the earlier version. Or, take a look at my ConvertDocs
script:

Subject: [Framers] FrameMaker 12 > FrameMaker 2019 release file issue

Hi Framers,

A quick question if I may. I am on Adobe FrameMaker 12 and a new colleague was
recently given a laptop with Adobe FrameMaker 2019 release on it.
However, when I try to open his FrameMaker files on my FrameMaker 12 I receive
the following error.

[cid:image001.jpg@01D4F9D0.1B160A10]

Conversely, he has the same issue when trying to update the book since all of
the files were created with FrameMaker 12.

Are Adobe FrameMaker 12 and the Adobe FrameMaker 2019 release that
incompatible? In other versions I have worked with (e.g., 7.0 > 9.0) I don't
remember encountering this problem.

Thank you,
Matt H.

[Framers] Thank you for the feedback

Hi Framers,

I just wanted to say I much appreciate all of the feedback I have received
several of you. Just back in Monday and going through what was sent (in between
other tasks) . I'll let you know if other questions surface.

:)

[Framers] New paragraph tag revert back in TOC when book is updated

2018-04-06 Thread Harrington, Matthew (Contractor)
Hi Framers,

I've been wrestling with a couple of elusive issues in Frame 12 when trying to
add a new paragraph tag in my chapters and getting it to show up in my TOC. I
was hoping one or more of you might be able to put me on the right path,
please. I'm having some difficulty articulating the issues as I write this, so
I'll just start with "Issue #1" for now.

Issue #1

In my FM book chapters I have been trying to create a one-off of the Heading 2
paragraph tag (let's call it "Heading 2 Special") where the numbering syntax is
set to
