Structured FrameMaker -> RoboHelp/Air?
Thanks Mahesh, unfortunately, I'm not in a position (time-wise) to try things out at the moment. I'd like something that works, but I guess I could always try to find somebody to do the testing for me. :) best regards, Jakob. Structured FrameMaker -> Robobhelp/Air?
Hi, We have a publication as structured FrameMaker 9 files that I thought I could quite easily publish with TCS 2.0's FrameMaker/Robohelp/Air integration. However, in the meantime I've been told that Robohelp is only able to take into account any formatting styles defined in FrameMaker but not the actual element contexts. Is that true? Could this possibly change with 2.5? cheers, Jakob.

convert inline elements to xrefs
Thanks everybody for their input such as: * use a FrameMaker plugin called Node Wizard. This could work very well if the target element wouldn't be an element of type Cross-Reference which is "special" and can't easily be generated, at least that's what I've seen from a quick test. I'd love to be told that there is a way. * write a FrameScript - I'm no expert, but this could well be a possibility, and the documents would stay in Frame (i.e. no loss of manual formatting tweaks). * write an XSLT transformation. I know how to do this, but: The FrameMaker files have already suffered manual tweaks which, I think, would be lost when exporting to XML. * write a script (Python). well, yes, probably, but first you need to get the FrameMaker files into a format that's readable by Python, such as XML (see above). * I also thought then to use the FM -> MIF -> XML+XSLT -> MIF -> FM route which would at least retain the manual modifications, or not? For this I looked at and downloaded Leximation's MIFML tool, which is documented to be able to read 7.2 files. We're using 9.0 for this project. Have there been any dramatic changes between these two versions on the MIF format? There's also a three year-old MIF <-> XML tool written in Java by the guys from O'Reilly (http://left.subtree.org/2007/01/25/converting-mif-to-xml/) but again it's probably not ready to grok the latest and greatest MIF. any more thoughts? can one force a dropdown menu state?
Hi, is there an option in FrameMaker 9's maker.ini file or any other way to force the "Source Type" drop-down menu in the Cross-Reference dialog panel to default to "Elements Sorted by ID"? I had a look at maker.ini as well as the some of the fminit/config/*.cfg files but I can't see anything that could be tweaked. Our IDs are supplied manually and make sense to the author, and lots of the labels are repetitive and don't give a good indication. We're looking for ways to make the insertion of Xrefs as quick as possible. thanks, Jakob.

EDD rule that refers to the book element - impossible?
Hi, please consider this: I have a structured book with a large number of components. The book structure conforms to the EDD, i.e. validating the book works. The top element of the book, has a @status attribute that can be either "draft" or "publishable". In the component files, I have xrefs that in draft mode are underlined. For publishing, the underline should be removed. My attempts to deal with this via the EDD have so far been unsuccessful. Is this the right approach? For the xref element I've specified this rule: Text format rules If context is: * < book[status=?draft?] Text range. Font properties Underline: Single Else Text range. Font properties Underline: None But it doesn't seem to get picked up. The documentation (Structured Application Developer's Guide) does not make any statements about the (non-)permeability of the border between book component and the book itself. thanks, Jakob.

find all xrefs for an ID in FrameMaker?
Bill, Matt, good idea, the index of markers. I very rarely use them, so I completely forgot about them. I'll try that for starters. The need is indeed to find all cross references for a given element. I must admit my reference for this stems from Oxygen XML's behaviour where you execute an Xpath query for a document and it then shows, across the bottom of the screen, a list of all found elements which are clickable and lead you to the item in the document. In the "Structured Authoring" workspace (on of the default ones), at the bottom of the screen of FrameMaker 9, there is a panel called "Cross References" which lists the xrefs for the current document or any other that you choose and that's open. It closely resembles what I've encountered in Oxygen XML, but it's not easily possible to restrict its display to those xrefs that point to a given element. I may indeed post this to the wish list for a future version as suggested by Matt. cheers, Jakob. Shlomo, that's a very nice explanation of our problem, thank you! Also, in this context, your recommendations make perfect sense. problems with long URLs in PDFs
Hi Lief, all, thanks for your reply. We know we can do this, but that's manual, isn't it, and we're looking for ways to automate this as much as possible. I should probably have mentioned that we're using structured FrameMaker, and we have an element called hyperlink that, similar to DocBook, has a an attribute containing the link and its contents is displayed as the label. And it's with this scenario that we're encountering the problems described earlier. cheers, Jakob. problems with long URLs in PDFs
Hi, co-workers of mine have trouble with some long URLs that break over lines and some may also contain "special" characters such as question marks or parentheses. Please note that we're using Acrobat to create the PDF and that the Generate Tagged PDF option is selected (as documented here: http://www.frameusers.com/2007/09/ second article). Re: problems with long URLs in PDFs
Hi, co-workers of mine have trouble with some long URLs that break over lines and some may also contain "special" characters such as question marks or parentheses. how to prevent empty pages in a book? (part xxviii)
I would just like to thank everybody on the list who chimed in with ideas, comments and help for their replies. Initially, I thought the fact that we generate the files with Miramo was secondary, but thanks to the list I was proven wrong. I've learned a lot today, and it was a pleasure doing so. The matter is now in the capable hands of the Miramo support staff who actually monitor this list as I found out. Thanks again. Jakob. Richard, I should have said this in my initial message, but yes I checked this and found the Pagination > Start: Anywhere for the first paragraph (which is actually the table itself). On the second page the only thing that's visible (if text symbols is toggled on) is the ? sign. Another observation for which I don't have an explanation is that the page numbers that are displayed in the status bar for each book component file are followed by an asterisk, like this: Pages: 180-181 * Does that mean they've been modified? Bill, I've double-checked the pagination settings for the book by choosing "Format > Page Layout > Pagination ..." with the book being the active file and all component files being selected. The settings are correct: double-sided, next available, delete empty pages Art, no we don't use the files outside the book context. This was just to make sure that Miramo is correctly producing one-page files. If I understand correctly, file settings are of no importance from the book perspective. Now, how can I "take" the file's apparently correct settings and apply them to the book? Oh, and we're not using chapters at all (at least not knowingly). The numbering for chapters is "as is" -- I could change this to "continue numbering from previous file". thanks, Jakob.
how to prevent empty pages in a book? (part xxviii)
Hello, I've now spent hours scouring the list archive and reading dozens of posts dealing with apparently the same problem as us, but none of the workarounds and solutions work for us. ?Please allow me to expose the problem: We have a book containing about 500 unstructured one-page documents which contain one table each. For information, both the documents and the book are generated by Miramo. ?Opening the documents directly (i.e. not via the book), we can ascertain that they really are one-page documents. However, on opening a file via the book (which also happens when regenerating the book), a second page is added to the file. Although this page could be removed manually (special > delete page) and would not re-appear after another regeneration, given the sheer number of files this is not an option. These are our settings: - next available page is applied to all document via the book-level pagination command - double-sided pagination - all files use the standard left/right masterpages - on save or print: delete empty pages We're using FrameMaker 8. Thanks, Jakob.

___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. how to prevent empty pages in a book? (part xxviii)
Hello, I've now spent hours scouring the list archive and reading dozens of posts dealing with apparently the same problem as us, but none of the workarounds and solutions work for us. Please allow me to expose the problem: We have a book containing about 500 unstructured one-page documents which contain one table each. For information, both the documents and the book are generated by Miramo. Opening the documents directly (i.e. not via the book), we can ascertain that they really are one-page documents. Hi Scott, I will try your advice about unwrapping the root element and see if that works, although this won't be a satisfactory solution for the authors. custom text plugin wanted
Hello, We're looking at weaning our authors off a previous XML authoring tool (Syntext Serna) and get them accustomed to FrameMaker 9 (structured). One of the things they really liked with the previous tool was the possibility to create easily graphical buttons in the menu bar and associate them with a text or structured snippet. Over time they accumulated a long row of icons used to quickly insert these snippets and thus avoided speling errors. I'm looking for an equivalent solution for FrameMaker 9. I have found Leximation's StructureSnippets plugin which is very close our requirements but apparently does not allow for non-structured, text-only contents (each snippet must be surrounded by a root element). Although this plugin does not provide icons in the menu bar, one can use the context menu, the keyboard or the modeless dialog box. Unless somebody can suggest a solution to my problem, I would be interested to hear from the FrameMaker customisation experts on this list about the work necessary to implement this plugin (in FDK rather than FrameScript). Requirements in a nutshell would be: - provide a way to easily associate unstructured or structured text (up to 1024 chars, this limit is for guidance only) with a button in FrameMaker's menu bar (and optionally other access methods such as context menu or modeless dialogue) - store them persistently in between sessions - allow for easy management (i.e. list buttons, add, modify and delete a button and its associated snippet) - as a plus, allow for custom icons to be used for the buttons cheers, Jakob.

FM files unaccessible on file server [RESOLVED]
[this didn't get through the first time around ...] Hi everybody, I thought I owe it to the list (and to the archive) to report our investigation and resolution of the problem we've encountered. Problem: Files were inaccessible on a central file server for a random period of time, a message about the user not having access to this file was displayed in a dialog box. Resolution: Looking on the server's Computer Management console, System Tools, Shared Folders, Open Files list, we noticed that the inaccessible files were always "accessed by" another user than the actual person working on the files. ?The open mode was "no access". We then concentrated on this person's machine and found that she had Windows Search activated and the network share containing the incriminated files had been added to the list of locations that should be indexed ... Obviously, whenever one of FrameMaker's lck and fm files was modified, Windows Search grabbed it and put a lock onto it in order to be able to index it properly. This in turn made it impossible for FrameMaker to correctly save the file. ?Removing the network share from the list of indexed locations, resolved our problem of inaccessible files. Recommendation: don't use Windows Search (or other services that lock files) on directories that contain FrameMaker files, or at least explicitly exclude fm and lck files. We didn't have any complains since we made the change described above. ?Hope this helps the few people who encountered the same problems as we did. cheers, Jakob. installation of FrameMaker 8 not completed - automatic rollback
Thanks for your replies so far everybody. Helen, I don't think we have the same problem because we do not install the PDF maker component (and never have). Also, the rollback + the reported message appear exactly one step before I'd expect the PDF Maker installation routine. Jack, I created a user as you suggested, but it didn't change a thing, unfortunately. Art, there is no antivirus on this machine (it's a dev machine, not connected to a network ...). And no, I haven't tried to reboot it into safe-mode (is this possible with Windows 2003 Server?). So, please let the suggestions coming! I may uninstall FrameMaker 7.0, just to see if it makes a difference. Thank you again, Jakob. installation of FrameMaker 8 not completed - automatic rollback
Hi, I'm trying to install FrameMaker 8 on a development machine running Windows 2003 Server. On this machine we already have FrameMaker 7.0. At the very end of the installation procedure (I had C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker8 open and saw the files) just before it says that everything is fine, I get this screen that says that a rollback is being performed. At the end, the installation wizard finishes with the following screen: "The wizard was interrupted before Adobe FrameMaker 8 could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again. Click Finish to exist the wizard." I have tried and succeded installing the same copy on a Windows XP Pro machine without problems. Also, I never had any problems installing different FrameMaker versions in parallel. Finally, yes I have administrative privileges on this machine. Thanks for hints and help, Jakob.

installation of FrameMaker 8 not completed - automatic rollback
___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to fram...@lists.frameusers.com. conversion table question
Hi, we're evaluating (rather successfully up to some point, I should say) the use of FM8 to structure an unstructured document using a conversion table. The one problem we encounter and can't pin down is the presence of an *Id* (Mixed case) attribute. We use an unstructured document without any EDD, and still the Id attribute (with a generated unique value) is created and we don't know why and how. It is not created for all elements. We would much more prefer to have id (lowercase) attributes created, but it seems that this is one of the shortcomings of the structuring method? The conversion table itself doesn't hold any information concerning any attributes. I can provide the conversion table if that it helps. Thanks in advance for your help. -- cheers, Jakob.

footnote trouble
Hi, This may be an easy one for you, but I have no idea and a deadline ... We have some footnotes in a structured FrameMaker document (7.2) where the call of the footnote is on one page, but the footnote itself finds itself on the next page. Usually, this is the case when the footnote call is on the last line of the page. This is annoying, of course. Is there a way how I can force call and footnote to be on the same page? thanks a lot in advance. -- cheers, Jakob.

how to take an element out of the flow
Hello, I have a lot of XML files with the same structure which contain among other things an element variable amount of text here which comes as the last element of the document. Each document represents two or four pages of the final document. The element should appear inside a box on the bottom left corner of the first page in the FrameMaker document. Currently, we have to manually move the element in between two paragraphs of the preceding text in order to achieve the desired effect. I am wondering if there wasn't a way to automatically do this when importing the XML file? Such as somehow moving it to a Flow B which would be constituted by a rectangle in the bottom left corner of the first page. Or a text inset? A drawback is that the text inside the element is of variable length, so the box would need to be able to grow or to shrink. Is anybody facing similar problems, and possibly already has found a solution to this? I would be really grateful for any pointers on how we could (even partially) automate this in some way or the other. We're using 7.0 at the moment, but considering a move to 8.x, probably even earlier if the new version were to solve this problem :) cheers, Jakob.

importing/structuring docx into FrameMaker?
Hi Martin, thanks for your reply. The main problem I'm facing is that our authors are using a modified version of Word 2007. Even though this is a modified version which guides the author to use the appropriate paragraph and character styles, it will still export docx documents. So, in my situation the structuring process will not be a "one-shot" operation, but an ongoing process. Therefore, I am currently investigating means to convert Word documents to structured contents, and as we're using FrameMaker to prepare our publications for printing, my thought was that the structuring of an unstructured document might be a possible route. thanks again, -- cheers, Jakob. cudspan dobatch plugin problem (FrameMaker crashes)
Hello and happy new year to all, I have a problem with Chris Despopoulos' DoBatch plugin from his Cudspan series of plugins. Judging from the mailing list he hasn't made an appearance yet, but maybe somebody else can clarify. We're using the DoBatch plugin to save several hundred files (in a number of batches) as PostScript (in a watched folder that get converted to PDF). It worked perfectly while we were using it in FrameMaker5.5.6+SGML. However, since we migrated to 7.2, we're encountering reproducible FrameMaker crashes when using the plugin. The only available version appears to be 1.0.0.1 dated 17 dec 2001. Has anybody else encountered this problem and possibly found a solution to it? Also, in case we are unable to resolve this issue, I am considering using Omnisys' runfm.exe batch tool. Would this be a valid alternative? Thank you in advance. -- cheers, Jakob.

looking for FrameMaker install location in the registry
Hello, I am preparing an update installer to be deployed by authors in my organisation. The update contains mainly updated EDDs and other supporting files and will be copied to the Structure subdirectory. I need to determine the location of where FrameMaker has been installed, as not all authors have the same directory structure, so I can't presume that FrameMaker will always be in C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2. So, I think the location of where FrameMaker has been installed is available somewhere in the registry (yes, this is Windows). However, searching for the string "Adobe\FrameMaker7.2" yielded several results. Here are my candidates: HKLM\Software\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.2\FMHome HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Path HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Folders HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{...-...-}\InstallLocation (where the string in between { and } is some kind of unique identifier. I would be grateful for advice which key to choose as I am not sure which one is the most reliable. Thank you. -- cheers, Jakob.

automating a custom save command?
Hello, I would like to automate a task that consists of saving all files in a book using a *custom* save command that is available through the use of a custom FDK client, without reprogramming the client. Currently, I have to open the book, open all files inside it, and then save them one by one, either selecting "Save Jap File" (the custom save command) from the File menu, or by using the keyboard Alt, F, J (J being the short cut for this command), Ctrl+F4 to close the file. Once books get bigger, this gets tedious very quickly. I wonder if Framescript can help here (there's the CallClient command, but I can't figure out whether this could be used for my purpose), or another batch type tool. Thanks for your help in advance. By the way, Frame is 5.5.6+SGML, and the files are structured. -- cheers, Jakob.

problem with PDF batch processing (cudspan batch + watched folder)
Hello, I have put together a process to batch process our FrameMaker files to create PDF files, like this: step 1) the Cudspan batch tool helps me create the batch file for a given book (the batch file contains three instructions for each FrameMaker file contained in the book: 1) open the file, 2) save as postscript in the in/ folder of a watched folder, 3) close original). this is a one-off step. step 2) the Cudspan batch tool then runs this file from within FrameMaker. The postscript files are saved in the watched folder of Acrobat Distiller which starts converting the arriving postscript files in the out/ folder. Now here's the problem: While most files convert OK, in some of them the pages are assembled in the reverse order, i.e. in the resulting PDF document the last page is shown first, and the first page becomes the last page. I have one batch where the first four documents have their page order reversed, and all others are fine. Another batch has no problems at all. I have made sure that the "Last Sheet First" option in the Print Document dialogue box is unchecked for all files. Manually printing these files to postscript and then manually distilling them works fine. I have also tried different postscript printers, but had so far no success in getting these renegade files to behave. What could the problem be, and how can I solve this? -- cheers, Jakob. PS: thanks to Cudspan for making available for free his ever so useful plugins!

In this case, FrameMaker may not be an optimal solution to your problem. Although FrameMaker can be accessed programmatically, through an SDK or third-party tools, it is mainly a user interface for authors to create contents interactively. If I understand your requirements correctly, you'd rather need an XSL-FO processor, ie. a tool which takes XML as input and creates PDF as output. In this case you should take a look at XEP (http://renderx.com/). The Apache project also provides such a tool, free of charge that's called FOP (http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/). However, all this is rather far away from the Technical Author's Path ... Good luck. -- cheers, Jakob.

Importing a very large DocBook XML file kills FM 7.2

I'm not sure how Frame handles non-valid or XML files, but this would be a first step to exclude one possible source of error. To verify the validity of an XML file, use an XML parser, such as rxp (ftp://ftp.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/pub/richard/rxp.exe) which is a fast command line parser (and may be better suited for this task than the built-in parsers of tools such as XML spy or Oxygen XML) C:/> rxp -sVV yourfile.xml -s suppresses the output, and -VV stops at the first error encountered. HTH -- cheers, Jakob.

[SOLVED] Case of attribute values modified on import SGML->FrameMaker 5.5.6

Yes, I just checked, and indeed, there are id attributes declared as ID, and others as CDATA (this is an intermediary DTD, I have to say in my defense :-)), the "real" ID values are modified. I didn't know that ID values are considered as names, although it makes sense. Thanks a lot! -- cheers, Jakob.
Case of attribute values modified on import SGML->FrameMaker 5.5.6
Hello, consider this puzzling little problem: I have an SGML document containing a number of unique ID attributes following this kind of scheme: id="ABCD.03.55816DE001BDF8FA". When importing this document into FrameMaker+SGML 5.5.6 (but 7.2 showed the same results), some values are, surpisingly, converted to "first letter uppercase, rest lowercase", i.e. Abcd.03.55816de001bdf8fa while other values are left as-is. The import/export rules file doesn't provide different rules for these attributes. I tried id attribute "id" is fm unique-id attribute "Id"; but the result remains the same. The SGML declaration has NAMECASE GENERAL set to YES (i.e. case is not relevant). I have tried setting it to NO (case sensitive) which indeed leaves the attribute values unchanged (but causes other troubles, as the rules file was created with YES in mind). However, I wonder if attribute *values* should be affected by the SGML declaration at all. Ny understanding was that the NAMECASE rule applies to names and name tokens, such as element identifiers and attribute names. Also, I didn't find this behaviour flisted as a bug on the FrameMaker Annoyances page (which lets me hope there's a solution to it): http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html Thanks for any insight in advance. -- cheers, Jakob.
