Way Too Much Corruption

I had this same thing happen during my last contract. Are you opening the
manual directly from a shared network drive? When I copied the corrupted
files to my desktop, they opened without error.

Graphics size within FM 7. and WWP

2006-10-29 Thread James Barrow
Hello All,

Thanks to everyone who helped me with the problem that I had with my .chm
file, in which it seemed to have jumped from ~13MB to ~43MB in one
generation.

After going through the files thoroughly, it seems that the culprits were
graphics that I saved as .bmps, instead of .gifs. After a few simple
calculations, I found that these graphics added ~30MB to the total .chm file
size.

My manager would like to save space wherever possible and has asked that I
reduce the size of the larger graphics and thus the size of my help file.
At this point I don't see any way of fixing this other than redoing the
documentation:

Click through our software application
Recapture the graphics in question, saving them as .gifs
Insert the graphics into my FM file
Regenerate the project in WWP

Is there a batch process that I can use to change these graphics from .bmp
to .gif in WW, or do I have to do this in the source files (FM)?

TIA,

Jim

Camtasia

2006-10-08 Thread James Barrow
Hmmm...is there a Camtasia list that I can join? Let's see if I can get
away with posting a question here and on WWP :^)

Now that I've finished my documentation, my boss wants me to create
tutorials, so he purchased Camtasia. Very nice application.

I listened to/looked at some of the tutorials that the previous tech writer
created and found them to be fairly good. Although her voice sounded like a
transmission between StarFleet and the Enterprise, she was able to run
through an entire procedure without stopping. How? I'll never know.

I created two tutorials last week and basically had to split the various
step procedures into quarters. More accurately, I had to split the software
screens I was talking about in quarters, talk about each quarter, while
taking breaks between each.

Is this how most of you create tutorials?

AltText Pop-ups

2006-09-16 Thread James Barrow
Hello All,

I'm creating pop-ups from images in my documentation. I'm doing this by
inserting ImageAreaAltText Markers in text frames defined in the graphics.

After regenerating my project the pop-ups appear like they're supposed to
when I pass my cursor over them. Unfortunately, these pop-ups remain
visible for ~5 seconds. With some pop-ups containing 255 characters, five
seconds is not enough time to read all of the AltText.

How do I modify the time that the pop-ups remain visible?

I've looked in the Scripts folder PopUp.js, but I can't find the variable
that controls this.

Thanks,

Jim

Gotolinks

2006-09-13 Thread James Barrow
Hello All,

My original questions about gotolinks and alt text pop-ups within graphics
were answered and everything worked out fine. Thanks!

Unfortunately, a new problem has arisen.

Whenever I place a gotolink in one Book file that points to a newlink in
another Book file, I get an error message that states that Frame 'could not
find the file at the specified path'.

The Help says to make sure that you put the entire path e.g.,
c:\Windows\programs\Framemaker\chapterone.fm.

I've done this, but still get the error message. Can Frame find file (named
location) even if it's on a shared drive (public drive)?
