Try turning off "Generate Tagged PDF" in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog box,
Tags tab and distill again.

 Hello all,

A client is requesting to recompile FM7 files after translation.
The template file available in the staging directory has .wfp extension.
Opening it in a text editor, I can see "quadralay-wdt-80"
The output files requested are .chm and compiled online help.

Is anybody able to tell me which tool has been used and which version?

Thank you

I know that I've successfully used something like Esc-m-p to shrink-wrap the
anchored frame to the graphic inside. The frame shrank, but everything else
stayed the same.

However, when I do it now, yes, it gets shrink-wrapped, but it also changes the
anchoring position of the anchored frame from "Below Current Line" to "At
Insertion Point." Totally wrecks my page formatting.

Is there a similar command that just shrinks the anchored frame without messing
with the anchoring position?

.book Files inside a Book

2008-08-29 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi everybody,
I have a feeling that the answer I'm going to get to the following question is,
"Are you crazy? You can't do that!" But, here goes anyway...

I have documented programs on a menu. This menu is quite extensive and contains
multiple submenus, each with their own programs. Right now my book contains a
separate file for each program on the main menu. Each submenu already has its
own book. I'd like to be able to plug those .book files into the main menu book
and generate a PDF. I can plug the book files in, but they are ignored by FM
when I update the book.

Is there is a way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance,

multiple submenus, each with their own programs.

Word to Frame

2008-02-22 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi all,
Wouldn't it be just as easy to use Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph Tools

That's exactly the same approach I used in converting ~10k pages of Word docs
(>50 docs) into FrameMaker at a previous employer.

Just to amplify on a few points, though:

You really want to use File>Import>File (Copy Into Document) to pull the Word
content into a pre-formatted FrameMaker template rather than directly opening
the Word file from the FrameMaker File menu. Besides the fact that the import
filter somehow seems more robust in that mode, you also have the opportunity to
leave behind most of Word-specific formatting junk by choosing the "Reformat
Using Current Document's Formatting" option in the Import Text Flow by Copy
dialog.

In the same macro that you use to rename the Word paragraph styles, you should
also redefine any styles that use bullets or numbering to remove them. If
bullets or autonumbers are present in the Word file, FrameMaker does its best
to preserve them and you'll get garbage characters in the converted file.

Other useful operations in prepping the Word file are to remove any TOC, LOT,
LOF, and index (since FrameMaker handles them completely differently), strip
any headers and footers (these will be defined in your FrameMaker template) and
remove any section breaks (meaningless in Frame). In my own process, I also
removed all graphics from the Word file because they really slowed the
conversion down and I knew we were going to replace the pasted-in images with
anchored frames and referenced graphics post-conversion.

PDF TouchUp Error

2007-06-08 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi all,
I'm in possession of a PDF (created by someone else) that needs to be
edited. When I try to touch up the text, I get the following error
message:

"All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot
add or delete text using the currently selected font."

Is this truly a font issue or could it be a permission issue? What does
"no available system font" mean?

Updating and saving an entire book

2007-06-04 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded to FM 7.2 (WinXP) and I'm finding the new "Cannot be
undone... OK to continue?" dialog box greatly annoying. It's especially
annoying when I'm updating a book with 40 files because it appears
between each file as it saves. Aaargh!

Is there any way to stop this dialog box from appearing when I save or
update documents?

Thanks in advance,

Hi all,
I upgraded to FM 7.2 (WinXP) last week and it's been behaving perfectly,
but suddenly I've stumbled upon some .book files (created in 6.0) that
will not open in 7.2.

The error message reads: "Although .book appears to be a

product."

I know that I can work around this by creating a new book file, but I'd
like to not have to do that. I'm also curious to know if anyone else has
encountered this. I do have other book files that were created in 6.0
which open just fine in 7.2.

MS Word Tables to Frame

Hi Margaret,
I think the last time (about a year ago) I converted tables from Word to

Hello all,

My team is trying to convert a word table to a FrameMaker document (FYI:
the conversion process is a Database to FrameMaker using Miramo).

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to preserve Heading Rows and Body

Essentially, we need to have the heading rows that have been established

Thank you so much for any help or ideas for a possible conversion

New mouse issue (again)

2007-01-16 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi everyone,
I know that this comes up on the list occasionally, but I haven't saved
the information because I never thought it would happen to me. :-)~

Our IT department installed a new Logitech trackball on my PC and the
darned thing won't scroll in FM (6.0p405).

Can anyone offer a solution? I'm the only person in our organization
that uses FrameMaker, so it's not like IT knows a lot about the
application.

Thanks in advance,
Jennifer

Off-topic - Microsoft InfoPath

2006-11-06 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi Gillian,
I just heard about MS InfoPath a couple of weeks ago when one of our IT
guys saw a form that I'd created in Word and said, "You know... that
would be so much easier to do in InfoPath".

He claims that if I create some databases in MS Access, I can populate
the same fields on many forms more easily and that if I want to, I can
track the data that is being input on the form fields.

Of course, this means learning Access and InfoPath. I've just briefly
looked at InfoPath and it seems to be pretty straight forward -- I like
the way you just insert your fields on the page.

I have only had a small amount of time to look at the software, so I'm
sorry I can't offer more advice about using it. I'd definitely be
interested to know what else you hear about it from others on the list.

Hmmm...is there a Camtasia list that I can join? Let's see if I can get
away with posting a question here and on WWP :^)

Now that I've finished my documentation, my boss wants me to create
tutorials, so he purchased Camtasia. Very nice application.

I listened to/looked at some of the tutorials that the previous tech
writer created and found them to be fairly good. Although her voice
sounded like a transmission between StarFleet and the Enterprise, she
was able to run through an entire procedure without stopping. How?
I'll never know.

I created two tutorials last week and basically had to split the various
step procedures into quarters. More accurately, I had to split the
software screens I was talking about in quarters, talk about each
"quarter", while taking breaks between each.

Is this how most of you create tutorials?

Global Search and Replace

2006-10-05 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi, Ben.
I have used Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph Tools plug-in for this
in the past. Here's a blurb from their paragraph tools doc:

"If you want to change the paragraph tag applied to paragraphs
throughout a
FrameMaker document, you could use Frame's search-and-replace operation.
This would be a time-consuming process. Paragraph Tools allows you to
create
a list of paragraph tags and the tag you would like to convert them to.
Paragraph Tools will use the conversion document to convert the
paragraphs
in the current document or book."

This has worked well for me and it only costs about $10. For more info,
you can go to their site: http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com

Frame Gang,

I'm sure this has been asked/answered before, but is there a way to
globally replace one paragraph tag with another in a book file? For
example, I have a tag called "X-1" and I want to replace it with "A-3".

Or would I be better off just changing the X-1 paragraph tag
characteristics to match the A-3 tag and re-importing the X-1 tag
throughout the book.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

New Distiller Settings

Hi all,
Our IT department just upgraded the Acrobat Distiller on my PC to
version 7.0 and now when I try to convert my Frame (v 6.0) documents to

already tried changing the Color Settings in Distiller, but I'm not
having any luck.

Can anyone give me some advice on fixing this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Trouble searching for conditional text

2006-01-06 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi everyone.
I'm having trouble searching for conditional text in Frame 6.0p405, on a
PC.

Here's what's happening: I can search a book for one condition (for
instance, "comment") and the conditional text is found. However, when I
try to search for more than one condition at a time (say, "comment" and
"site users"), none of the comments (which I know DO exist) are found.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice?

Thanks in advance,
