.book Files inside a Book
Hi everybody, I have a feeling that the answer I'm going to get to the following question is, "Are you crazy? You can't do that!" But, here goes anyway... I have documented programs on a menu. This menu is quite extensive and contains multiple submenus, each with their own programs. Right now my book contains a separate file for each program on the main menu. Each submenu already has its own book. I'd like to be able to plug those .book files into the main menu book and generate a PDF. I can plug the book files in, but they are ignored by FM when I update the book. Is there is a way to accomplish this? Word to Frame
Hi all, Wouldn't it be just as easy to use Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph Tools as it is to create that macro? ~Jennifer -Original Message- From: framers-bounces at lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Fred Ridder Sent: Friday, February 22, 2008 12:20 PM To: Mike Feimster; Flato, Gillian; Framers List Subject: RE: Word to Frame Responding to Gillian Flato, Mike Feimster wrote: > What I've done in the past is use word macros to make the para styles > in Word match the Frame styles, then import the word docs into Frame. That's exactly the same approach I used in converting ~10k pages of Word docs (>50 docs) into FrameMaker at a previous employer. Just to amplify on a few points, though: You really want to use File>Import>File (Copy Into Document) to pull the Word content into a pre-formatted FrameMaker template rather than directly opening the Word file from the FrameMaker File menu. Besides the fact that the import filter somehow seems more robust in that mode, you also have the opportunity to leave behind most of Word-specific formatting junk by choosing the "Reformat Using Current Document's Formatting" option in the Import Text Flow by Copy dialog. In the same macro that you use to rename the Word paragraph styles, you should also redefine any styles that use bullets or numbering to remove them. If bullets or autonumbers are present in the Word file, FrameMaker does its best to preserve them and you'll get garbage characters in the converted file. Other useful operations in prepping the Word file are to remove any TOC, LOT, LOF, and index (since FrameMaker handles them completely differently), strip any headers and footers (these will be defined in your FrameMaker template) and remove any section breaks (meaningless in Frame). In my own process, I also removed all graphics from the Word file because they really slowed the conversion down and I knew we were going to replace the pasted-in images with anchored frames and referenced graphics post-conversion. -Fred Ridder _ Connect and share in new ways with Windows Live. http://www.windowslive.com/share.html?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_Wave2_sharelife_012008 ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as jennifer_randel at khsd.k12.ca.us. PDF TouchUp Error
Hi all, I'm in possession of a PDF (created by someone else) that needs to be edited. Updating and saving an entire book
Hi everyone, I recently upgraded to FM 7.2 (WinXP) and I'm finding the new "Cannot be undone... OK to continue?" dialog box greatly annoying. It's especially annoying when I'm updating a book with 40 files because it appears between each file as it saves. Aaargh! Is there any way to stop this dialog box from appearing when I save or update documents? Off-topic - Microsoft InfoPath
Hi Gillian, I just heard about MS InfoPath a couple of weeks ago when one of our IT guys saw a form that I'd created in Word and said, "You know... that would be so much easier to do in InfoPath". He claims that if I create some databases in MS Access, I can populate the same fields on many forms more easily and that if I want to, I can track the data that is being input on the form fields. Of course, this means learning Access and InfoPath. I've just briefly looked at InfoPath and it seems to be pretty straight forward -- I like the way you just insert your fields on the page. I have only had a small amount of time to look at the software, so I'm sorry I can't offer more advice about using it. I'd definitely be interested to know what else you hear about it from others on the list. ~Jennifer On 11/6/06, Gillian Flato wrote: > The powers-that-be are fed-up with Adobe Acrobat right now since 7.0 was > supposed to enable digital signatures. Global Search and Replace
Hi, Ben. I have used Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph Tools plug-in for this in the past. Here's a blurb from their paragraph tools doc: "If you want to change the paragraph tag applied to paragraphs throughout a FrameMaker document, you could use Frame's search-and-replace operation. This would be a time-consuming process. Paragraph Tools allows you to create a list of paragraph tags and the tag you would like to convert them to. Paragraph Tools will use the conversion document to convert the paragraphs in the current document or book." This has worked well for me and it only costs about $10. This would be a time-consuming process. Paragraph Tools allows you to create a list of paragraph tags and the tag you would like to convert them to. Paragraph Tools will use the conversion document to convert the paragraphs in the current document or book." This has worked well for me and it only costs about $10. For more info, you can go to their site: http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com Hope this helps, Jennifer -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] com] On Behalf Of Anderson, Ben Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2006 12:20 PM To: Framers@frameusers.com Subject: Global Search and Replace Frame Gang, I'm sure this has been asked/answered before, but is there a way to globally replace one paragraph tag with another in a book file? For example, I have a tag called "X-1" and I want to replace it with "A-3". Or would I be better off just changing the X-1 paragraph tag characteristics to match the A-3 tag and re-importing the X-1 tag throughout the book. Any help would be appreciated! Distiller Error Message
Hi all, I have been sucessfully creating PDFs from FrameMaker today, but all of a sudden, I try to create one and I it Distiller can't produce it. I've tried changing the Default Settings to see if there was a problem with one of the settings, but I get the same message regardless of selected setting. I'm using FM v 6.0, Distiller v 7.0, and am using the Adobe PDF printer. New Distiller Settings
Hi all, Our IT department just upgraded the Acrobat Distiller on my PC to version 7.0 and now when I try to convert my Frame (v 6.0) documents to PDF, all of the colors in the document appear in black and white. I've already tried changing the Color Settings in Distiller, but I'm not having any luck. Can anyone give me some advice on fixing this problem? Trouble searching for conditional text
Hi everyone. I'm having trouble searching for conditional text in Frame 6.0p405, on a PC. Here's what's happening: I can search a book for one condition (for instance, "comment") and the conditional text is found. However, when I try to search for more than one condition at a time (say, "comment" and "site users"), none of the comments (which I know DO exist) are found. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice?
