This is true - unless you are using system variables that are
different than the default definitions.
If you open a MIF snippet specifying only user variables,
FrameMaker will automatically create all system variables with
default values when opening the snippet.

Kind regards,
Klaus

URGENT: Need help in using fonts in FrameMaker

2011-03-18 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hi Keerthi,

FM7 text exchange via clipboard with non-CP1252
text is not possible.
You can paste your text in Word, apply the target
font (Gulim, Arial, etc.) save it as RTF and
open/import that RTF file in FM7.
For non-Asian text (Russian, Greek etc.), ensure
that you have virtual fonts activated (Arial CYR,
Arial Greek etc.).

Kind regards,
Klaus

Font oddity

2011-03-05 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Tim,

> WinXP
> my WINDOWS/Fonts folder does not contain any Helvetica fonts

Installed/registered/activated fonts does not have to be
located in the windows fonts folder. They can be located
anywhere on your drives.

Open your registry (start menu > Run > regedit) and inspect
the entries in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   Type 1 Installer\Type 1 Fonts"
and also in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   Fonts".
Any according entries here?

If not:
Although the original "Helvetica" might be provided either
by "resident" printer fonts from your printer driver or by
any legacy mapping entries to Arial in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   FontSubstitutes",
Helvetica Narrow and Condensed are probably not.
Anyway: Try changing your default printer in the system control
and/or your current printer in your application (e.g. to Adobe
Acrobat) and check whether those fonts are still available.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Replacing special character "single quote"

2010-12-16 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Verner,

This might be caused by a bug in S-Tagger for Trados 8.2 SDL 2007
and was fixed by a hotfix.

Before the hotfix, S-Tagger did write single straight quotes
in the text unencoded instead of "\q".

was erroneously written as

and resulted in FM as
  Text withstraightquotes'inFM8.'

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Re: Generate report of inconsistent conditional text settings?

2010-09-29 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Yves,

You may want to take a look at the FrameScript
"Report: Condition Formats".
http://www.i-frame.itl.info/en/feature-description/i-frame-modules/quality-pack/report-condition-formats.html

It reports condition inconsistencies in detail.

Kind regards,
Klaus Müller, itl AG

SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-23 Thread Klaus Mueller
Gillian,

FM on XP/SP3 or Vista does not save documents with OLE objects.
Replace them with regular referenced images or turn back to XP/SP2.

How to get Unicode text in markers (FM9)

2010-05-20 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Wim,

Instead of translating MIF7, I strongly recommend to
translate MIF9 files. Until Trados does not support MIF9,
you can workaround this limitation by changing
to in the first line of the MIF files
before translation. As far as I can see, the new FM9 features
won't be altered by Trados.
You may want to check whether you can retranslate your
already translated files using the current TM.

If you cannot do a retranslation, you can fix your marker
contents the following way:
- Open the MIF7 files in FrameMaker 7.2p158
- Apply Arial CYR to your documents
- Transfer the marker content to body text
- Open the documents in FM9.0p250 (9.0.3) or later
- Retransfer the marker text to markers

Note that the problem does also occur with xref formats
and paragraph numbering.

One way for the marker conversion is to use the attached
FrameScript. The script does process all opened documents.
IXgen might be a solution, too.

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Transition From FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 9

2009-02-20 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Danny,

When your FM7 documents uses virtual fonts
(e.g. Arial Greek), FM8 tries to convert
the chars to Unicode (mostly successfully).
FM 9.0p183 does not consider virtual/mapped
fonts.

Kind regards,
Klaus

"Display heading text" in book file

2009-02-15 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Jon,

> I have examined my files and notice that the
> heading text that is displayed is typically the
> first major heading (such as Heading1) that
> FM encounters in the file but not always.

As far as I know, only the text in the main flow
is considered for the book component heading.
Text in other flows is not considered.

Unstructured FrameMaker can not differentiate
between regular paragraphs and heading paragraphs.
So just the first paragraph in the main flow that
contains any text is considered for the heading.
Leading (regular) spaces in the text are skipped.

> for some files (but not all) in the book,
> FM will always show the file name

If a document contains no main flow, or no paragraph
with text in the main flow, FrameMaker will use the
file path (relative to the book path) for the book
component heading.

Beyond this, the heading text can be overriden by a
plugin or framescript. So I have written a script that
uses the heading text to display only the filename
or the full path of the book comps (instead of the
relative path).

The content of the book component headings is refreshed
(and automatically set to the first paragraph text)
on every book update.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Combined Fonts in FM8

2008-12-26 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Morgan,

> [...] Customize Layout,
> I don't see an option for Combined Fonts

Unnecessarily (imo), Adobe restricted the availability
of some Asian specific commands to be visible only with
an Asian system locale.

You can activate the CombinedFonts command by opening
your "fminit\configui\cmds.cfg" file with a text editor.
Find "Command CombinedFonts", change ""
to "" and restart FrameMaker.
Now you are able to create or change the CombinedFont
definitions of your document via "Format > Document
> Combined Fonts".

This is also possible for some other commands like
InsertRubi and RubiProperties.

Note that if you import the char or paragraph formats
from one document with specified combined fonts into
another document (without combined font definitions),
the combined font definitions were always automatically
inserted. This is also true for just copying some
selected text from a document that has a combined font
applied.

*But* if you already have combined font definitions in
your documents and want to change those definitions globally
in all documents, there's apparently no way to achieve
this. FrameMaker won't change existing (equally named)
combined font definitions on format import.
Unlike with an Asian system locale, there's no (visible)
"Combined Font" checkbox on the Import Formats dialog.

Anyway: This checkbox is actually there - it's just not
visible. Therefore, you obviously cannot select its property.
The funny thing is: If you press the "Select all" button
on the import dialog (and manually unselect some or all
other visible checkboxes), the changed combined font
definitions *will* be imported!

(I'm sure you can also change the definitions of your
combined fonts globally by global replacements in the
MIF files.)

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Structured and Standard FM 7.2

2008-12-04 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Art,

I totally agree: When opening structured documents with
unstructured FrameMaker, a warning message should appear.

The only problem is that Structured FrameMaker does
unnecessarily and counterproductively write structure
information in unstructured documents when creating
MIF files which is causing unneeded error messages in
different workflows.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Hello Framers,

Maybe someone of the FM9 beta participants could check
this issue with the current version?
(FM8 Structured does also write those structured book
component information into unstructured MIF documents.)

Structured and Standard FM 7.2

2008-12-04 Thread Klaus Mueller
Les, David, Rick,

> You shouldn't encounter any problems working in an
> Unstructured (Standard) FM document while FrameMaker
> is set for Structured.

> This is no problem whatsoever.

Actually, I regularly encounter an annoying problem when
working with unstructured documents while FrameMaker is
set for Structured:
When saving unstructured documents with structured FM
as MIF and those MIFs are opened in unstructured FM,
the "Document is Structured" error message does occur.

You can reproduce this the following way:
- Start FM in structured mode
- Create & save a new document
- Create & save a new book
- Add the document to the book
- Update the book
- Save the document as MIF
- Change the FM product interface to (unstructured) FrameMaker
- Restart FrameMaker
- Open the saved MIF file
=> The follwing message does occur

> This document contains structure information.
> The current interface does not read structure information.
> If you continue, the structure information will be
> removed. Editing and saving this document may result
> in a loss of information. [...]
> Options:
> (?) Open as View Only
> ( ) Open for Editing
> [Continue] [Cancel]

If multiple people (with differently set FM structure modes)
are working with such documents, this can be pretty annoying,
because it is not obvious that this error message is
inaccurate and the document is actually unstructured.

A 'usual' workflow in a translation environment:
- Person A does a quality check of the documents to translate
(with structured FM) and saves the docs as MIF.
- After translation into multiple languages, the layout
persons B, C and D are irritated because they get those
  error messages.

The error message is caused by the "DBookElementHierarchy /
ElementContext" entries in the "Document" node that are
written into the MIF file.

When saving documents with FrameScript as MIF, there is
unfortunately no option to strip/suppress this gratuitous
structure information.

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Cross-Reference/Hyperlink Question

2008-10-09 Thread Klaus Mueller
Jona,

Create a /NewLink/ hypertext marker in your "Mission Planning"
section title paragraph (e.g. "newlink MissionPlanning").

To link to that section title, don't create a cross-reference.
Instead, apply an appropriate character format to your "mission
planning" phrase and insert a /GotoLink/ hypertext marker
(e.g. "gotolink MissionPlanning") within that phrase.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Entering unicode characters directly in an FM 8 document

2008-06-02 Thread Klaus Mueller
Geoffrey,

The first method described here ("How to enter Unicode characters
in Microsoft Windows")
http://www.fileformat.info/tip/microsoft/enter_unicode.htm
does work for me in FM8.
You probably need to set the registry key EnableHexNumpad as described.

If you don't know your unicode (hex) values inside out, BabelMap
http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelMap.html
is a cute tool to determine, convert and search for unicode chars
(valuable tip by Stefan Gentz).

Kind regards,
Klaus

Unicode support of FrameMaker 8

2007-12-21 Thread Klaus Mueller
(sorry for double posting ...)

Hi all,

I would never recommend using special chars in FM
file or format names, but found the following issue
with FrameMaker 8.0p266 (that worked in FM7):

Clicking on the following hypertext marker results in
an error: "message system explorer C:/Program Files/Adob?"
(although the folder exists, of course).
If the folder does only contain ASCII chars, no error
occurs.
Shouldn't FrameMaker convert the internal UTF-8 string
to ANSI with "message system" commands?

Also, the QuickKey command does no more work with
formats containing non-ASCII chars:
"F9, B" does preselect "Body", "F9, ?" does insert
an Udieresis into the document.
Note that the localized version of FrameMaker also uses
default format names containing special chars, e.g.
"?berschrift 1" in the German FrameMaker.
If they won't consider any UTF-8/ANSI/Keyboard layout
conversion, the char shouldn't at least be inserted
into the document, imo ...

Kind regards,
Klaus

Arrow navigation in FM tables

2007-03-08 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Stuart,

With this modification, you are able to navigate
in tables with the arrow keys - but navigating
within paragraphs is then no more possible.

There's a free FrameScript TableNavigation.fsl
available: http://www.itl.eu/108.0.html#c400
that lets you navigate within tables with the
arrow keys.
(Unfortunately, currently only the german site is
online.)

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Character counts

2006-11-30 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Michael,

> Pgf.Text.Count option - it gives different value than
> if I do File>Utilities>Document Reports>Asian Charater Count

Does your document contain double byte characters?
Do you run FrameMaker with an Asian system locale?

- You need to ensure that your paragraph loop does
only process paragraphs on body pages.
- Note that you need to count characters in text lines
separately.
- The FM command does not count spaces, tabs, en spaces,
soft hyphens etc. - Pgf.Text.Count does.

  Set vWhiteSpace = ' '+CharTab+4S+9S+16S+17S+18S+19S+20S;
//-- Note: This "#S" notation works with FS3 and later.
  Set vDoc = ActiveDoc;
  Set vCharCountAll = 0;
  Set vCharCountPlain = 0;
  //-- Loop through paragraphs:
  Loop ForEach(Pgf) In(vDoc) LoopVar(vPgf)
If (vPgf.Page.ObjectName = 'BodyPage')
  Set vPgfText = vPgf.Text;
  Set vCharCountAll = vCharCountAll + vPgfText.Count;
  Get String FromString(vPgfText) NewVar(vPgfText)
RemoveChars(vWhiteSpace);
  Set vCharCountPlain = vCharCountPlain + vPgfText.Count;
EndIf
  EndLoop;
  //-- Loop through text lines:
  Set vGraphic = vDoc.FirstGraphicInDoc;
  Loop While(vGraphic)
If (vGraphic.ObjectName = 'TextLine')
  If (vGraphic.Page.ObjectName = 'BodyPage')
Set vPgfText = vGraphic.Text;
Set vCharCountAll = vCharCountAll + vPgfText.Count;

An observation: Frame Wizardry

2006-10-04 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Klaus,

These definitions are not taken from the fminit/custom file;
I guess the formats are stored internally ("fallback catalogs").

This happens only if the appropriate catalogs are not
defined in the MIF file at all.
If you add *empty* catalogs to your MIF snippet,
they are kept empty:

Anyway, the standard colors, system variables and standard
marker types cannot be removed.
A document without a master page is not possible, too.

Display Using Printer Metrics

Instead of using the table title:
Did you try using heading rows? They do appear at the
top of the table, as well as at the top of every subsequent
page.
If actually your column headings do not appear on every
subsequent page, select a cell in that row (ctrl + click)
and examine the status line. It should say: "Heading Cells".
If the row is actually a body row ("Body Cells"), create
a real heading row via "Table > Add Rows or Columns | Row(s):
To Heading". (see also:
http://www.frameexpert.com/plugins/tablecleaner/index.htm)

In table cells (and table titles), you need to use
the key combination "Esc Tab" to insert a tab stop.

Kind regards,
Klaus

A long time starting FrameMaker

2006-08-05 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Rick,

A co-worker of mine once had the same problem:
On her system, there was a font installed from the network,
without copying it to the fonts folder.
And in the meantime, the font was removed ...

>> Is there someone I can go to check the path
>> of where Frame is looking for fonts.

Your client should take a look into the registry:
- HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
- HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
  Type 1 Installer\Type 1 Fonts

Alternatively, she could run the following FrameScript script.
It reports all installed fonts with folder and filename
(FrameScript 3.0 or later required).

Kind regards,
Klaus

Re: A long time starting FrameMaker

Kind regards,
Klaus

Opening all text insets in all components in a book ... phew!

Note that there's a free FrameScript available:

  BookOfTextInsets.fsl v1.6
Creates a new temporary book with all (nested) text
insets of the current document or book. This allows
you to make global changes (e.g. search & replace)
  in all text inset sources.

TOC made with XRef needs line break in middle of line(s)

2006-06-15 Thread Klaus Mueller
Bodvar,

> I agree that this can "easily" be done in FrameScript

I did implement such a line break fix in the FrameScript
DocTOC: http://www.itl.de/html/englisch/consulting/fsl/solutions-2.html

It does fix the line breaks of book TOCs as well as of
the chapter TOCs (that are inserted by the script).
It does not insert a soft return 'XX characters from
the start of a TOC line' nor does it re/store any specified
line break position - it just breaks a line at a specified
*right* margin (e.g. 5.0mm) after the next available space
char.
It does also fix that other known issues (pagination alone
at the beginning of a line etc.).

Unfortunately, the script does only support paragraph
formats for the creation of the chapter TOCs, but not
elements. That might be enhanced in the near future.

Kind regards,
Klaus M?ller, itl AG

Follow the KISS principle and just add several more standard TOCs, one
for each section. Turn on the hyperlinks, etc.

Each time you update the book and the TOCs, you'd need to open each
section TOC and delete the not-in-that-section items, but otherwise
your line break tools and standards would continue to work.

Re: TOC made with XRef needs line break in middle of line(s)

There's a free FrameScript RemoveFontMenu.fsl at
http://www.itl.de/html/englisch/consulting/fsl/itl-pool.html#misc
It removes the "Font" menu from the Format menu
and all context menus.

Kind regards,
