Unresolved cross-references in text insets to locations within the text inset
I am using Frame 8p277 on Windows XP Pro, SP3. I have a text inset source document with 19 different text insets (each in their own named flow). I am using these text insets in a container document a total of 123 times (yep, lots and lots and LOTS of duplication). One inset is used 28 times, another is used only once. The rest vary in number of usages. Many of these text insets contain cross-references to locations within the same text inset. The text inset source document is NOT in the same directory as the container document, although it is "close by". When I import by reference into the document and regenerate to update the TOC and the cross-references, I get multiple unresolved cross-reference errors from the document with all the text insets. The cross-references are also not updating properly. Within the inset, the step is number 2, but within the container document, it should be number 3. I know there are issues with cross-references and text insets, but I thought that was when you were trying to use a cross-reference from the container document to something within the inset, or from within the inset to something in the container document. These are from the inset to another location in the same inset. I can, if necessary, convert all the insets to text and regenerate just prior to creating the final PDF, but obviously I'd rather avoid that. Can anyone help me resolve these cross-references? -- Lin Sims
Re: moving preserving links between chapters in a book
I saved one of my chapters that included a cross-reference to a different chapter as a MIF. Examination showed that cross-chapter references includes the absolute path to the linked file. If the directory structure isn't exactly the same in both places, the link won't work. You can either recreate all the cross-chapter links or you can use Bruce Foster's Archiver plugin. It will bundle all the files (including graphics) in a book and save it wherever you want, and it updates the links in the process. Re: Graphic causing Frame to crash
Ah! Yes, I did indeed use Copy + Paste. I'll try the Import option in the morning. As I recall, the only thing I did to my ClipboardFormatPriorities was move Text to the front. And before things started crashing, it listed Facets as DIB. (I don't know what DIB is.) UPDATE: This is morning. I am, as Art suggested, using Import by Reference and, as Richard suggested, NOT using copypaste. so far, things seem to be working. Keep the fingers crossed. Thanks for the help. So far that's been fixable by reimporting the page layout from elsewhere, but I'd rather not have to worry about that happening. Just a guess: You said you copied them -- did you by chance _paste_ them into FM? If so (depending on your ClipboardFormatPriorities setting in maker.ini), you may have inserted them as embedded OLE objects. You do _not_ want that. It brings along a ton of overhead from the application associated with PNG files on your system. And it can be quite unstable, especially in a low-memory, low-resource situation. If you pasted them (or used File Import Object), delete them and insert them properly, using the File Import File command and selecting Copy into Document. Someone suggested saving as 8-bit PNG. IMHO, that's a bad idea, too. The file size savings is remarkably small. And 8-bit color uses a 256-color palette. All the defined palette colors (like RGB 150,88,127) in all your PNGs get added to the FM document's list of defined colors. A bit of a nuisance, if you ask me. HTH! Richard Richard G. FM 8 "Next pgf tag" having no effect...
This seems to be a (semi) long standing issue with FM8, in that others have reported having problems with it: to be specific, when pressing return, FM ignores the Next Tag information and adds another line using the same tag. I ran into this issue last night. Since I didn't know that others had experienced it, I thought it was something weird with my installation and I reinstalled everything. Not something I really wanted to do! The Adobe Forums thread (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.3c059165) hasn't been updated since April. I was wondering if anyone had found a fix or work around for this in the months since? -- Lin Sims
FM 8 "Next pgf tag" having no effect...
You want something even MORE odd? The exact same document (as in, it's stored on a thumb drive that I access directly for this) has this issue on my home machine but works perfectly on my office machine. And the day before yesterday, it worked at home, too! Both machines have Frame 8.0 p277, on Windows XP SP3. It's in Structured View, but I'm not using elements or anything, just standard tags. As far as I can tell, this has no effect on what I'm doing since I'm not inserting any elements or attributes. I round-tripped the document through MIF to no avail. As to set up: I created the first tag in Paragraph Designer, pressed return, created the second tag in Paragraph Designer, pulled the definition for the first tag up, and selected the Next Pgf Tag box and chose the second paragraph tag's name from the drop-down list. This is pretty much how I do it every time I want a specific paragraph tag to follow. (I generally don't have text there because the issue cropped up in a template I'm currently creating.) FYI, I have the following plugins installed: Archive AutoText EZVars 3.02 Sourcerer PGF_Whopper TOC Breaker RefIcons CudSpan Doc Tools Paragraph Tools When I get home, I'll try Richard's work around and report back. UPDATE: Re: FM 8 "Next pgf tag" having no effect...
It took a complete, and I do mean complete, reinstall from CD and all the patchers, but things are now working as they're supposed to. All I can think is that, somehow, the installation was bad. Thanks to all for their suggestions, and my apologies if at some point I seemed to get a bit testy at the end. Computer problems do that to me, sometimes, when they don't seem to respond to logic. Custom Ruling & Shading
(As an aside -- wow! it's been a long time since I've been on this list. I'm glad to be back at a gig where I get to use Frame!) I'd like to set up a single cell table that sort-of mimics the look of a terminal window. What I'd like is to have a double border, outside medium width, darkish grey, inside thin, lighter grey. Is that even possible? Help isn't being helpful. Thanks. Lin Sims
