I have an 86-chapter book with the same variables in every chapter.

I want to convert all instances of all user variables to text.

I can delete the variable in one chapter and thus convert all instances
in that chapter, but importing variable definitions across the whole
book doesn't delete any variables from the other chapters.

Can anyone recommend a way to do this? (I'd rather not learn FrameScript

AW: Using large amounts of text files imported as reference

2011-08-11 Thread Maike Roeder
Hi Linda,

do you mean text files or frame files? It's very easy to create a new
Frame file and to import many (many!) files as referenced files in it.

Benefit: You can change anything in the original files for different
releases and your book with chapters (and referenced files) are the
same.
The numbering and formats will be updated after import or update in the
frame files (so you can control it with other templates)...

You need to update the book only for TOC and Index.

Fellow Framers,

I'm interested in learning to write scripts to run in Framemaker to
automate/eliminate some of those tedious, repetitive tasks that seem to
crop up.

I've been reading about Javascript on the W3Schools site and I found the
"Adobe Introduction to Scripting" document, which is a good start, but I
need more particularly about scripting in FM (I think). In this Adobe
document, it states "Adobe provides scripting references for many
applications. The references are located on you installation CD.",
however I downloaded my software online. There is no installation CD.

Does anyone have information about this set of documentation? Other
recommendations for information to get me on my way?

Thanks for your help.

All the answers I have seen so far seem to relate to HARDWARE.
In a SOFTWARE context, I think it's much more common to
use something like the following (this is my wording, so no official):

Warning: an irrecoverable action (formatting a disk), permanent data
loss or other
action that may result in an irreversible change to the system (such
as deleting a user
account) or damage to the hardware

Caution: an action that may seriously affect system performance (memory usage),
make take an extremely long time (resulting in inability to use the
system), may
seriously affect the system integrity (like removing password control
or disabling a
firewall) or loss or changes as listed for a warning that are reversible.

Note: an action that may result in inconvenience or confusion or,
positively, actions
that may make usage easier.

AW: PDFs having a mixture of A4 and A3 page sizes

2011-07-08 Thread Maike Roeder
Hi Claire,

There's a solution for your problem using FrameMaker 10.

The new version of the plug-in collection 'Finalyser'
(http://www.finalyser.de/en/finalyser.html) supports creating PDFs with
books/documents that contain different page orientations and page sizes.

There's a free 30-day trial during which you can try this feature (just
activate it under 'Extended Scripts > PDF tools').

Be sure to set the page size in the printer settings in FM to the
largest page size in your book (A3).

Betreff: PDFs having a mixture of A4 and A3 page sizes

Dear all

I was recently asked to test whether we could produce a PDF with mixed
page sizes. I did some experimentation with a colleague using Framemaker
7.2 and Acrobat 8/9, to find out if I could.

The results were:

1) All chapters except one had their master page size set to A4,
with the one chapter at the end set to A3. Both versions of Acrobat
created the manual but the A3 sized chapters were cropped to A4.

2) Having set the Acrobat setting in Distiller to A3, it only
created the whole document as A3. I tried it again to size to A4, but
got the same result as in Number 1.

3) My colleague tried separating the files. He created the main
chapters of the pdf as A4 and created the A3 sized chapter separately,
outside the book file. Then he tried to insert the pages, but Acrobat
didn't like it.

Does anyone know of a setting that I've missed so that when someone
sends a pdf to print, it will automatically print my last chapter as A3,
instead of A4?

I thought that due to the nature of Acrobat, it would only create a PDF
as one size, not varying sizes, otherwise there would be an option to
automatically resize pages.

In the event of the latter, does anyone know of any changes, to support
this option, with respect to this in Acrobat 10?

Kind regards

Hi group

In FrameMaker 9 and 10, you can see a list of missing graphics ("unresolved
graphic inset" or "unresolved image") in the "Insets Pod". Is there also a way
(or, if necessary, a Framescript) to export or save this list?

Thanks

Hi Orly,

Do you know "Delete unused paragraph format"? That is part of the
TOOLBOX (FM 7 -9) or FINALYSER (FM 10),

a popular Plug-in from Georg as SYSTEC, today SQUIDDS:

Scratch That,

Even though it finds the tables, it actually leaves them intact when
searching and replacing this way.

HI All,

I'm trying to delete empty paragraphs from a file I imported from Word.
A simple

\P\p

or

^\p

in the find box using wildcards does fine, except if my empty para is an
anchor para with a table anchor in it. It seems FM doesn't see the table
anchor.

I have a script that deletes empty paras as well, but that left me with
empty paras that were a level 3 or 4 Heading.

And yes, I already did a MIF wash. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Orly.

Re: Extracting art from Word docs

2011-04-29 Thread Maike Roeder
Hi Tom,

That's a good question, managing images is very important. For a long
time it's possible to manage images in FrameMaker by referencing copied
graphics, exporting images to a folder, or doing book transfers and
selecting a folder for the graphics. Today we also manage graphics
between FrameMaker, Bridge, Photoshop and Illustrator to change quality
or file format with ExtendedScripts.

If you have many Word files with images, I would suggest you go the
following way:

1. Open the Word file with FrameMaker -> The images will be imported as
copied images

2. Take the TOOLBOX/FINALYSER feature "Export copied Graphics" -> All
images will be referenced

3. Use book transfer to sort and re-organize your referenced files in
separate folders

4. If you like to change the file format user the FINALYSER
ExtendedScripts

Send me a Word file if you like and I will create a re-organized
FrameMaker file with a folder of the graphics for you.
