[Framers] Framemaker Crashing

2018-12-06 Thread Pam Harper
I am working on a new 64 bit computer with Frame 2019 and up to date on
patches. This computer was upgrade to 18 Gb of RAM hoping it would resolve the
problem I had with my previous computer which had half the RAM. When I'm
working in Frame for an hour after I have just logged in, suddenly, the screen
deteriorates and doesn't shut down, but eventually freezes. I close completely
out of Framemaker and reopen and it's doing it again. The screen looks every
bizarre with text missing and doubling of text, etc.

Does anyone know what is going on? I had this problem with Frame 15, but not as
much, and I could resolve it by just shutting Frame down and either rebooting
or reopening Frame. This is happening repeatedly making it hard to get anything
done.

Book Set up and Pagination

2015-02-09 Thread Pam Harper
This is not one of the joys of being the only techwriter and Frame user here
because this may be a simple question, but I've spent too many hours trying to
figure this out, and so far no success. I develop manuals in Frame 12 that are
PDF'd for cable and equipment technicians who must print them out before
leaving for new installs.
Usually I have set up the docs for single side with no right or left master
pages (which looks awful when printed out).
I'm working on a 180 page doc that I am setting up for a first page and
left/right pages for every chapter in the book (although the first three don't
need that, I think). The first three sections of the doc are the cover (two
pages-front and copyright), change page, and TOC. The fourth section, or
chapter, is the installation chapter followed by separate appendices. How do I
set up the book so that odd-numbered pages print out on the right side?
I'd also would like to force each section to begin on the right side-how do I
do that? Is putting in a blank page the only way to do that? This may not be
too popular with technicians who already complain about the size of the docs.

Frame TOC Template

2014-11-18 Thread Pam Harper
Where does Frame get its template for a TOC when it's generated? It's always
importing old multiple reference pages that have been long deleted from other
chapters. The chapters always generate fine, and I constantly see this with the
TOC. I use Frame 12, but have seen this problem in many versions.

RE: Table running over into footers and beyond

2014-11-05 Thread Pam Harper
Les,

When I add just text to the landscape page, it flows correctly and adds a new
page. I tried another table format that I use, one with no heading row and that
flows correctly. So now it appears that it has something to do with a table I
set up with a heading row to it.

Pam -

What happens if you add simple text not in a table to the landscape page? Does
it flow correctly and add a new page? Or does it result in a solid bottom
border suddenly appearing and text disappearing off the bottom? If the latter,
the problem is that autoconnect for the landscape page has been turned off.
On the master page, select the text frame (control right-click) and select
Properties, just under the box for the flow tag is the checkbox for autoconnect.

Subject: Table running over into footers and beyond

When I add spaces or anchored frames below one another in a table that is on a
landscape page, the table extends itself without regard to the text frame into
the footer and beyond. It doesn’t do this with the same type of table on a
portrait page. This has done this in Frame 10 and 12, which I now use.

The key seems to be that the table is on a landscape page, which I created as a
custom master page with a regular text frame as a template for body page text
frame. The Flow Tag is A—same as the rest of the master pages. Nothing is
rotated. I only run into this table behavior on a landscape page. If I add
extra pictures or text in a table cell on a portrait page, it always breaks
cleanly or at least where I can logically break it. Any ideas?

Thanks

HTML Mapping Table

2014-04-09 Thread Pam Harper
I have an HTML mapping table showing up my reference pages. I'm fairly certain
I don't need it-unless someone can explain why I may need it? I don't create
any help from Frame, but I may just be showing my ignorance, hence my first
question. This mapping table came from an old Frame 7 template (which we were
creating help files), which unfortunately carries over even though I've updated
the templates.

Next, I tried to delete the table from the reference pages, and when I delete
the page, it reproduces itself about 8 times, and I have to manually delete all
the new ones that popped up. Any suggestions on what is going on and how to
delete once?

I use Frame 12 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system.

Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Pam Harper
I have all of my books set for single-sided with Delete Empty Pages. Lately
extra blank pages are showing on many documents even after I save (which almost
always clears out empty pages) or select Remove Overrides when going from
master view to page view (another reliable way for deleting extra pages). But
they still remain, and I can only get rid of them manually. I use Frame 10 on a
64-bit Windows 7 system. Today I worked on a 100 page file where the document
shrank considerably to about 50 pages. And again, even after saving and
generating the book, the extra pages still remained.
These pages show after the end of the section mark. What could be causing this?

Get rid of RGB colors

2013-09-26 Thread Pam Harper
I have hundreds of RGB colors that show in my color pull downs and would like
to get rid of these. I tried one recommendation about saving the file as a .mif
file and then again as a Frame doc. This worked except all my graphics, which
reside in the document, turned grey. Any other suggestions on how to trim this
extremely long list of RGB colors? I use Frame 10 on Windows 7. Also I have
created one RGB color that I need for the documents-that one I have given a
name, but the other RGB colors are listed as their number.

I only vaguely remember how to do this, but I don't see any responses. Assuming
your deliverables are PDF, I think using a cross-reference in FM will work if
(1) both books and all the files in them are open when you create the two PDFs,
and (2) in their final destinations, the relative path between the PDFs is the
same as the relative path between the FM books.

 If I
use a cross reference, what would I select for a Building Block in the
 list?

The good news: You don't need to define a new cross-reference format.
Presumably you already have a cross-reference format for pointing to a numbered
section heading (using the $paranum building block). The bad news: I'm pretty
certain there's no way to include the title of the other PDF in the
cross-reference format (how would FM know what it's going to be?). I guess you
could insert a second cross-reference to the $paratext of the book's title
paragraph.

You can include the $filename (name minus extension) or $fullfilename
building block, but that's the FM chapter file name. It may or may not get
translated into the PDF file name when you create the PDFs of the two books as
specified above -- I'm not sure. Try it. Or create a cross-reference format
specifically for xrefs to a particular book, with a definition something like:
section $paranum in MyOtherBook

HTH, and sorry for the vagueness and uncertainty. Maybe somebody else can
confirm, clarify, or correct as needed. :-)
