Rick,

You could try to review your Translation process (English into Japanese) –
may be some pointer in the files has been ‘localized’ into Japanese. We
had similar issues with Chinese, where the double dot ( : ) in Index
markers was replaced by a Chinese character that looked the same but
apparently had a different character code.

(you didn’t include the bookfile in the translation process I presume …?)

You could try to rebuild the book from scratch using the Japanese files
and see if you get the same errors.

Another option is to save the files as MIF (again) from FM and re-open to
save as FM. This should clean up erroneous coding.

Couldn't open filename

2010-08-13 Thread Rick Spiegel
We are using FrameMaker 7.1, unstructured.

I am encountering the following problem with files translated into
Japanese from English.

When I try to update the book containing the files, I get the following
message in the Book Error Log window: FrameMaker did not update the
generated files because of errors such as: Couldn't open
metadata-cache.fm. I also get the dialog that says: FrameMaker did not
update the generated files in 'help.book' because of errors during the
update process.

If I go to the book file and double click the file in question, it opens
perfectly, with no unresolved cross-reference or unavailable font messages
or any messages at all.

If I close the file, however, and try to update the book again, I get the
same error messages as before. And the file is definitely writable. And by
the way, if I leave the file open and then try to update the book, I get
the same messages pointing at a different file. And I also get the same
result if I open, save, and close all the files in the book and try to
update again.

Has anyone else ever seen this behavior and, more importantly, does anyone
have a solution to suggest?

Thanks,
Rick Spiegel

Rick,

You can open the files invisibly by adding the parameter
MakeVisible(False) to the Open command in your current script. Something
else that might help save on memory a bit is to avoid updating xrefs and
insets (if that works for your situation) by adding
UpdateTextReferences(No) and UpdateXRefs(No) params to the Open
command. Just a thought.

Hi Mike,

I have tested opening the files in the book by choosing File Open All
Files in Book, and they all open with no problem. It almost seems like
the number of files is the problem, because if I remove a few from the
book, starting at the file at which the crash happens, and then run the
script again, it will crash at the first file after the few I have
removed. And yet in Frame 7, the script runs just fine.

Any further thoughts? By the way, I have also posted to framescript-users

RE: Problem running FrameScript in Frame 9

2010-05-17 Thread Rick Spiegel
Hi Michael,

Thanks for your response. Here's the code:

IF ActiveBook = 0
  DISPLAY 'No active book.'
  LEAVESUB;
ELSE
  SET vCurrentBook = ActiveBook;
ENDIF

LOOP ForEach(BookComponent) In(vCurrentBook) LoopVar(bookcomp)
 OPEN Document File(bookcomp.Name) NewVar(vDobj) FileIsOldVersion(OK)
FontNotFoundInDoc(OK) FontNotFoundInCatalog(OK)
AlertUserAboutFailure(False) FileIsInUse(ResetLockAndContinue)
RefFileNotFound(AllowAllRefFilesUnFindable) LanguageNotAvailable(OK)
FontChangedMetric(OK);
  SAVE Document DocObject(vDobj);
  CLOSE Document DocObject(vDobj);
ENDLOOP

And I will take your suggestion and post to the framescript-users group as
well.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

I've not had any trouble with FM9 and FrameScript. In fact, I run

don't you post the code so we can all have a look.

I have recently upgraded to Frame 9 and FrameScript 5.2R1 from Frame 7
and
FrameScript 2.1. I find that when I run a simple script that opens,
saves,
and closes all the files in a large book file, using FrameScript 5.2 and

Frame 9, Frame crashes repeatedly. When I run the same script in Frame 7

(using the same FrameScript 5.2R1) on a Frame 7 book file with Frame 7
versions of all the same files in it, it works just fine.

Has anybody else experienced this sort of problem, and more importantly,

does anyone know what the problem might be and how I might fix it?

FrameScript to convert table to paragraphs

2010-04-19 Thread Rick Spiegel
Does anyone have an idea as to whether it's possible to write FrameScript
that will convert a table to paragraphs? If so, what would that look like?

What I am trying to do is write a FrameScript that will open a document
that contains only one table, and convert that table into paragraphs "Row
by row".

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,
Rick Spiegel

Framescript needed

2009-08-04 Thread Rick Spiegel
I need a FrameScript that can process a Frame file containing
documentation for many functions. In the file, the description of each
function begins with a heading containing the name of the function. This
heading is always in a particular paragraph tag that's the same for each
function and is not used for anything else in the document.

I need this script to remove from the file the description of all
functions whose names do not appear in a list in a text file. The
following is an example:

Function A (a heading in an H1 paragraph tag)
Body text and other headings (all H2 or lower) describing function A.

Function B (a heading in an H1 paragraph tag)
Body text and other headings (all H2 or lower) describing function B.

Function C (a heading in an H1 paragraph tag)
Body text and other headings (all H2 or lower) describing function C.

Function D (a heading in an H1 paragraph tag)
Body text and other headings (all H2 or lower) describing function D.

In this example, I would like to provide a text file listing function A
and function C, and have the script read this text file and then remove
the sections for funtion B and function D.

Does anyone have a script that could be adapted for this purpose? I am
willing to pay for the priviledge of using it.

Thanks,
Rick Spiegel

Different font metrics

2008-11-14 Thread Rick Spiegel
I am getting the following message from FrameMaker when attempting to open
a document to which we have recently added some Japanese characters:

Document named functions.fm is formatted with different font metrics (for
example, different character widths or kerning).
Does anyone have any idea what this means and how to correct it?

Thanks in advance,

Can a Framescript event script interact with an external program?

2008-07-08 Thread Rick Spiegel
I would like to attach a FrameScript event script to the Open command in
Frame. I would like this script to run an external program and pop up a
warning in Frame based on the results of the external program. The
external program can return either an exit code or a string.

And a related question: the external program referred to above is
Perforce. Does anyone know of a plug in that would allow Frame and
Perforce to communicate?

Thanks in advance,

Autonumber at end of paragraph

2008-03-26 Thread Rick Spiegel
I'm using Frame 7.0.

I want to use an autonumber, with its Position set to End of Paragraph, to
insert some text after the text I type for the paragraph. Frame does this,
except that it puts the autonumber text all the way at the right margin of
the page. Does anyone know of a way to get Frame to put the autonumber
text where the setting for Position implies it will put it: right at the
end of the paragraph -- in other words, immediately after the text I type?

If anyone can provide a solution, it will solve a big problem for us.

Thanks,

Basic question about Structured Frame

2007-03-13 Thread Rick Spiegel
My company is considering switching to Structured Frame to solve our
current problems with content reuse, and I have a question, the answer to
which, to me, holds the key as to whether or not Structured Frame is the
answer we're looking for. I would appreciate it if anyone with experience
in using Structured Frame could respond to this question.

The question is this: if our documents were authored in Structured Frame,
could we use the same topic at a heading 1 level in one document and at a
heading 2 level in another document? If so, in a very general way (no need
to write a small book!) how does this work?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
