OT: Translation cost comparison

2011-02-24 Thread Roy Lewis
I apologize for going off topic but can anyone point to figures that compares
translation costs for Framemaker documents compared to MSWord documents.
Someone told me Frame was generally cheaper, but they could not supply a source
for the data.
Thanks,
Roy

Function key for page break

2011-02-14 Thread Roy Lewis
Frame 8 on Win XP.
Can anyone tell me if there is a function key that brings up the page break
dialog box?
The keyboard shortcut Esc s p b works well, I was just hoping for some way of
getting to the dialog with  fewer keystrokes.
Thanks,

Tracking edits functionality

2010-12-30 Thread Roy Lewis
Using Framemaker v8 on Win XP.
We have just engaged the services of an editor who is using the track changes
feature to explain edits and enter comments directly into the Framemaker files.
The problem is that I am finding the track changes tool bar very limited in its
functionality, for example, there are no accept and find next edit or reject
and find next edit buttons which would greatly speed up the process of
evaluating the edits once the editor id done with the files.

How are other users dealing with this?
Are there scripts or plug-ins that add functionality?
Will this be addressed in later versions?

Thanks so much.

RE: Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified

2010-12-20 Thread Roy Lewis
Thank you again to all who volunteered to assist on this issue.
Here is an update on what I found:
Changing the to allowed me to then change the
tag applied to the paragraph to something that would not end up affecting the
header.

My previous solution of deleting all the XML in the MIF file worked, but it was
indeed overkill. I had forgotten that you cannot delete the last paragraph in
an FM document anyway.

As always this is a wonderful group and I am thankful to all of you.

FM8 running on Win XP.

On some files that were converted from MSWord by an intern last summer, I
have noticed that the last paragraph in the fm file cannot have its
properties modified nor can the paragraph be deleted. By modifing properties
I mean that I cannot change the tag name or any properties. It is like the
paragraph itself is locked.
Unfornately the properties of the tag are causing other issues in the
document dealing with header and footers.
All I really want to do is to delete the paragraph, that would solve the
problem, but it cannot be deleted. Other parts of the document can be easily
edited without issue, it is just the very last paragraph. The other odd
behavior I see is that being the last paragraph it is not showing the
section sign text symbol like I have seen in every other Framemaker file.
I have tried Wash via MIF with no success.
Does anyone have suggestions as to how this might have happened or how I can
go about fixing it?
Thanks,
Roy

Re: Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified

2010-12-20 Thread Roy Lewis
Bingo!
There was in the file. Sadly, changing it to did
not resolve the problem.
However, removing the MIF code for the entire paragraph did make the offending
paragraph go away and it also restored the section sign to the new last
paragraph.

I did look at the MIF reference guide and found this for PgfLocked:
Yes means the paragraph is part of a text inset that obtains its formatting
properties from the source document.

However, this does not appear to be a text inset, so I am not sure this
applies.

In summary, I have a solution. Thank you! But I would love to know if there was
another way of fixing it other than editing MIF XML, that always makes me
nervous.

Thanks everyone!

It very well may be that the paragraph is locked... I recall seeing this, and
the only solution I remember was to edit the MIF file directly.  The statement
you need to find and change is to in the MIF
file.  I don't have FM8 on this system so the following may not be exactly what
you see but should serve as reasonable guidance...

You can edit the MIF as text via FrameMaker by selecting it as normal through
the FM Open Dialog, but hold the shift key when you click the 'open' button.
This will bring up the "open as Text" dialog and you want to be sure to choose
the "treat each line as a paragraph" option.  You must also be sure to SAVE it
as TEXT after editing (else you get a frame document showing the MIF code
itself)

Or use a regular text editor (I like Notepad++ from SourceForge -
it's free) to edit the MIF.

I don't understand why you don't see the closing section symbol, perhaps it is
set to white or a very small point size, or maybe the text overflows the text
frame and the autoconnect feature is off... there are a few possible reasons.

Templates for international use

2010-09-17 Thread Roy Lewis
Our international offices have agreed to begin using Framemaker to create
locale specific documentaion. They will use the same tags and formats we do,
but things like paper size being different will surely have some impact on the
general page layout, master pages etc.

First, I am trying to compile a list of things to check to ensure I have
covered everything. If anyone has done this before and is willing to share
things to watch for, I would appreciate it.

Second, Is it necessary to maintain a completely separate set of templates just
because of the different page size? I would rather not have to maintain
templates that have only 5% differences.

Thirdly, if parallel templates are required, what is the easiest method for
maintaining the changes? and keeping the templates synchronized?

Any and all suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Roy Lewis

Framescript missing after patch install

Recently some new users in our group installed the 273 and 277 patches on
Framemaker 8.0 on an XP operating system. When Frame was restarted, the
Framescript menu item is no longer present.
I do not recall if this happened with others in the group when they did the
patches.
At any rate, is there a simple solution? Do they need to install Framescript
again?
Thanks,

FM8 on Win XP Next Pgf Tag not working

2008-11-17 Thread Roy Lewis
I am evaluating Framemaker 8 as a replacement for Framemaker 6. I am using
Framemaker 8.0p273 on Windows XP Pro SP3.

The Next Paragraph Tag attribute for a paragraph does not seem to be working
unless there is some text in the paragraph.
Our template uses paragraphs with no text to insert graphics in the side head
area. The next paragraph tag should insert a paragraph with auto number text
when the user presses Enter.

This worked fine in Framemaker 6, but in Framemaker 8 the next paragraph is
identical to the previous paragraph. It is as though the cursor is setting at
the beginning of the empty paragraph instead of at the end.

I have tested the behavior with a new document and a Frame 6 document that was
upgraded and both yield the same undesirable results. I have been unable to
find any information on this at the Adobe site or in the archives.

Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this?

Roy Lewis

FM8 on Win XP Next Pgf Tag not working

2008-11-14 Thread Roy Lewis
I am evaluating Framemaker 8 as a replacement for Framemaker 6. I am using
Framemaker 8.0p273 on Windows XP Pro SP3.
?
The Next Paragraph Tag attribute for a paragraph does not seem to be working
unless there is some text in the paragraph.
Our template uses paragraphs with no text to insert graphics in the side head
area. The next paragraph tag should insert a paragraph with auto number text
when the user presses Enter.
?
This worked fine in Framemaker 6, but in Framemaker 8 the next paragraph is
identical to the previous paragraph. It is as though the cursor is setting at
the beginning of the empty paragraph instead of at the end.
?
I have tested the behavior with a new document and a Frame 6 document that was
upgraded and both yield the same undesirable results. I have been unable to
find any information on this at the Adobe site or in the archives.
?
Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this?
