Hi,

I don't really know the Framemaker angle here, but the following blog post can
point you in the right direction on how it works on the PDF side.

Subject: Using PDF for context-sensitive help

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I’ve come into a situation
where I need to maintain an online help system that uses a PDF document as the
target. When you click a Help button in a dialog box it’s supposed to bring up
a particular page (or go to a particular heading) in the PDF – not just open
the PDF on page 1. Does anyone know how this might be done? The PDF is created
from FrameMaker so I’m assuming there must be markers in the FrameMaker files
somewhere but I can’t find them, or I’m not sure what to look for. The person
who created this system isn’t here anymore so I’m trying to figure out what he
did to make this work. When it worked the PDF was created from FrameMaker 7;
I’m using FrameMaker 9. It appears all of the Help buttons in the product are
broken now – they open up the PDF file I created in FM 9 but only to the first
page, so they aren’t context-sensitive anymore. I don’t know if upgrading to FM
9
made a difference here or not.

I know using PDF for context-sensitive help isn’t ideal – that’s a different
story.

Thanks for your help –

Peggy

Re: Printing rich media pdfs from FrameMaker 10

2011-09-02 Thread Vikrant Rai
Hi Kate,

This question seems to come up quite often, and the answer is always the same.
It can get a little confusing at times, especially when deadlines are looming
large, and all you want is a PDF.
Let my try and explain why you need to Save as PDF rather than Print.

The Print to PDF route is used to create a Print ready PDF that can be sent
for physical printing. It replaces your physical printer with the Adobe PDF
Printer or Distiller. A PDF thus created is closest representation of what the
document will look like when it is printed on paper.
If someone prints a document on paper, they don't expect a video to play when
you pick up the paper. Not yet, anyway. Same thing with Print to PDF.

The Save to PDF however creates an interactive PDF that is not explicitly
meant for printing, but for viewing on electronic devices. Audio, Video, 3D
models etc are included.

Thanks,
Vikrant

the video file into FM and it will play but when I print to pdf, the video
comes out as a picture and playback is not possible. I have tried this with
lots of different file types - a .wmv, .mp4, .mov and .mp2 files all of which
are supported by FM 10 but none of which work.

Is there a setting that I have missed? Should I be saving the file to pdf

I wonder if those instructions were for an older version of Acrobat. In Acrobat
X, File, Edit, View, Window, Help are the only menu items I see, as well. A
lot of the stuff is now moved over into the Tools button at the far right.
Tools Protection More Protection Security Properties.

But an even easier way (while viewing the document) is to use Ctrl+D to open
Document Properties. Then choose the Security tab.

Somehow, my reply did not reach the list, so summarizing here.

1. You can use the \r special character to force line breaks in variables.
2. The FM help file says that the limit is 255 characters. !- But I think that
it works for longer strings as well. Didn't really do boundary testing, but my
guess would be 1024 characters.--

From: D L Reynolds reyno...@semicool.com

Many thanks for the information. I didn't know how to force a line break, but
you're right -- that would be great for addresses. But isn't there a character
limit on variable length? I think I've encountered that when using variables
for
boilerplate paragraphs.

Again, many thanks. Have a great day.
